A note: The 6 string SX scale length seems to be 2" shorter than the 8 string.
Good to know. The 8-string is pretty large, so the 6 might be more manageable for some people.
So helpful! I just received a 6-string lap steel as a gift and really had no idea how I should get started until now. Many thanks! (subscribed!)
Glad it helped! There are some more videos on my channel to help you get started, and more are on the way.
Sheeeee I can't tell which guitar got more funk 🥵
it's hard to smell over the internet.
Very nice gentleman 🤙 !
Thanks, man!
Sorry but that so-called "Hawaiian Sound" really SUX. I lived there for years and I heard that awful discord noise way too often. It deserves to be FORGOTTEN.
Might want to get your ears checked then.
Loved the trades. Terrific swinging version & wonderful differences in the improvised sections by each player.
Thanks for the kind words, Graham! We had a good time!
Yeaahh
These guys are PRO'S!
Wow, a gorgeous triple neck! In the 70's before I played steel at all, I thought these consoles were just the most outdated and kind of silly instruments anyone would want to play. Now I own 2 Universal 12 string 7+5 pedal steels, an old 8 string lap in C6, and I would kll for one of these! Prices now thru the roof and I'm retired, but at least we get to see and hear them played, and played well! If I lived out west I would find a way to buy one and jam anywhere, anytime. If you are not a steel player, you can pick up an 8 string for $150 or so. Very frustrating at first, but incredibly rewarding when you start getting it. Guarantee you'll be the only one on the block!
Agreed!
Just love the chordal movements played here!
thanks, it's a great song!
Well done! Those tunings complement each other beautifully!
thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Sooo niccee........ahhhh
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It is so beautiful. I love it. Aloha! Thank you ❤
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Another gem!
thank you for the kind words!
Stunning on console steel- could pass for organ parts!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Another great video and playing!
Thanks for watching!
OMG - swinging hard and not much "talent enhancer," (aka reverb) -- beautimus.
haha, thanks!
Thanks! I wonder what the historical connection was between Nuages & Sand?
Jules Ah See and Jerry Byrd definitely had been listening to Django, and that shows in their arrangements. Good ear!
@ thanks for posting these tunes. I have a 6 string double neck with E & C6 and an 8 string with Low C6 and E13, but there’s very little stuff out there on E13 (although it’s close to PSG E9) and B11, so this is invaluable x
@@jonathanlee5907 I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Awesome ! Is a C6 maybe?
Thanks! It's E13.
I love the way you all grin and smile at what the other guy pulls out of the hat. Hot stuff! Thanks!
We had fun! Thanks for watching!
@@texas_swing That's what we have to give when we get up and play in front of people: We can share our joy of sharing the music, and the people who listen can come along. It sounds strange, but people are, in a way, waiting for permission to be happy. You all bring that to me, all the way up here on a little island in Canada. Well Played!
@@freda5978 what a nice way to put it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff, Ethan.
thank you!
Thanks for the education
thanks for watching!
I love your style and expertise
thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it!
Sounding great, brother 😊🤙
Thanks, man!
sounds great
Thanks for listening!
WOW that 4 neck Fender and great playing! Just played 2 hours on my 8 string lap, C6 is a blast!
Thank you& I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Never played a Fender pedal steel I have a Sho bud maverick
I love the way you two work together! Mutual appreciation, cooperation, and support. The music shows it. A friendly conversation. Well Played!
Thanks for listening and the kind words!
Man! What a sound! I can't think of a better way to start the morning - coffee and this great rendition of September Song.
Thanks for listening!
Did you play in C6 Tuning ?
@@alvinomurray5724 E13.
I bought my first lap steel today, looked up how to tune and this was the first video that came up and i found it very helpful. Ready to make some noise. Thank you! Subscribed.
Thank you and have fun!
WELL DONE !
thank you!
…so sweet! ❤ beautiful tone
thanks for listening!
Old times - good times. Love the music and your outstanding playing, not to forget the authentic tone of your instrument. 🚂
Thank you for the kind words--I appreciate it!
I have had a Rogue for almost 2 years, I kept it in C6, It's a decent guitar, I like to play it a lot. In the near feature, I'd like to upgrade to an SX 8 string, and tune it to straight A6, and then, way into the feature, I'd like to have a Pedal steel and double neck Fender stringmaster. I was curious how you got such a good tone out of the rogue, what kind of amp? I'm really glad to find someone else that loves western swing, country, and Hawaiian steel playing, I'll defiantly subscribe!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you like that kind of music, too! I think I played it through a Fender Blues Jr. The Rogue pickup sounds pretty good, and I took the cover off and raised it up, which made it sound better.
Absolutley amazing!
thank you!
Top player
thank you for listening!
Love your technique. Great!!!
thanks for listening!
That was inspiring. May i ask ehat tuning?
Thank you! It's A6, but I swap out the low f sharp string for a reentrant d sharp.
@@texas_swing thanks for the reply! Thought it sounded like a6.
@@brodyaga... good ear!
Great as always
Thank you!
Wow, magnificent.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
So Brother Shaw , this is one year after you posted this. What is your opinion the Gretsch Lap steel? Have been a player 50 years. Going to change because can’t hold none of my 6 strings.
The Gretsch is a pretty good instrument. One of my students has one, so I got to check it out. The Epiphone and Gretsch are definitely built better than the SX or Rogue, but they also cost more.
@@texas_swing am now leaning towards the Epiphone because of the catclaw fabric to help it stay on my lap. Old guitar player having to find new ways to play guitar and make music 🎵 .
@@dalewadsworth5703 sounds good, have fun!
Beautiful music, beautiful guitar, beautiful player, beautiful playing... period...
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I ordered an Epiphone Electar, not long ago. So, I plugged it into our Marshall amp. I'm not getting much sound, at all. Not getting volume. I turned the volume on the lap steel all the way up and turned up the Marshall. Still, very little volume. Doesn't sound like any videos of it you see on RUclips. I play my Fender Strat on the Marshall, and it sounds great. But, not getting much volume on this Electar. How are all of you people getting volume? What am I doing wrong?
It sounds like something is wrong with your pickup or electronics. The Electar is pretty similar in volume to a Strat. Also, make sure your tone control is open.
Excellent MAn ty
thanks for watching
The answer is none: Buy a good vintage one.
Incredibly tasty
thank you!
I’m not bitching. I like what you’re teaching and it great. But You play notes over yourself telling us the notes and I’m not sure I’m hearing you correctly as I’m writing these down. Will you yell the notes really loud and let me know you have a sense of humor about my little audio critique? Lol
I’ve had a couple lapsteels for many years and really only used a few time, but just guessed a tuning and tuned open E, Em or E7. Very rudimentary and through osmosis and on the fly. But worked for what I was doing. Now I want to do more. Lol
Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
I get that and will keep it in mind in the future. For now, you can go to John Ely's steel website, and he has them all written out.
Fantastic
Glad it helps!
Beautiful stuff !
thank you!
Nice Ethan. Looking forward to the new episode of Steelin’ the Bar
