A pearl in the Bible represents noble traits or characters which were cultivated or developed in a long process while enduring hardships just as how real pearls are naturally made. the gates of pearl in the New Jerusalem may mean that only those who've endured hardships yet remained faithful till the end can enter within, it's like our spiritual passport. That is why it was written that not all who worships and calls God Lord can enter, but only those who remained true and faithful till the end. And I can say that most Filipinoes nowadays do not have such traits. When hardship comes, they complain, murmur and blame God for their sufferings. I can say this as I am a Filipino myself. That pearl like traits of character is not exclusive to an individual, or a country, but a character that anyone can have, and we have Christ's life as a pattern. And He has said: "come to me and (learn of me) for I am meek and lowly"'. Christ being the (way) the (truth) and the (light), gives us hope for that spiritual passport, His character which must be developed in us, through trials and hardships, like a pearl, and even, like a gold tried in fire. So when harship and trials come your way, instead of murmuring, or complaining, thank God, for He is only testing your faith.
