Installing Fender CuNiFe WideRange humbuckers into a J Masics Jazzmaster - with sound samples!
While I love playing my Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, I've never quite felt in sync with its pickups. So when Fender announced they were making CuNiFe WideRange humbuckers in a Jazzmaster pickup size, I was intrigued.
A caveat: the sounds in the video aren't necessarily optimal for the new pickups - I set the sounds for the originals, so it's more of a comparison between the two rather than showing off the WideRanges at their optimum (I'll do another video later to show off the sound on their own). But the Mascises (Mascii?) are pretty popular, so if anyone else is thinking of upgrading, then hopefully this comparison may help! Plus, these pickups are still pretty new (at time of posting) so...

Yamaha SA-30T restoration: part three, in which things are screwed in
Просмотров 511Год назад
This part has taken a bit longer to come about thanks to my whole household catching the plague, combined with me slicing into my finger while making dinner the other week. But I'm, back and I've got a wibbly-wobbly (not timey-wimey) vibrato arm to add! Many thanks again to @TheSupposedStringMeister for selling me the arm and parts - it's beautiful workmanship, and without it I'd be kinda stuck...
Yamaha SA-30T restoration: part two, in which things are measured

First of all, thanks to everyone who watched part one! Much appreciated. Still waiting on the vibrato tailpiece parts (yay for international shipping), but got started on a few other parts of the project. If you haven't watched part one - ruclips.net/video/By7eNghSKrE/видео.html - I bought this early '70s Yamaha SA-30T on eBay recently, missing most of the vibrato parts, the bridge pickup cover...
Yamaha SA-30T restoration: part one, in which screws are undone
Просмотров 929Год назад
I happened upon this gorgeous Yamaha SA-30T in need of some TLC on eBay the other week, and despite not having much technical prowess decided to grab it and fix it up. And because these are still a bit uncommon, I thought I'd document the process for you all. (Apologies for the occasional focus mishaps; I forgot to turn off the autofocus before filming.) You can find @TheSupposedStringMeister a...
Tim Rogers & The Twin Set's "Tines Of Stars Unfurled" lesson - FULL ALBUM

Find all the tabs here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Fe6uA0-HRQwa7okxAhhPmqLc9rH3J3Ii Within a week of 'Tines Of Stars Unfurled' coming out I'd tabbed the whole album. And while most of Tim's parts are chords which are relatively easy to strum, most of the songs have a little riff, tuning, part or just something interesting to talk about. So here's a mega-lesson with those bits for every son...
Neil Finn - 'She Will Have Her Way' guitar lesson

A lesson on how to play Neil Finn's 'She Will Have Her Way'. My mate Phil asked if I knew the chords to Neil Finn's beautiful 'She Will Have Her Way', and when I couldn't quickly find anything accurate online I figured it out and made a video. (And apologies for cropping off the top of my head; I had to get it done quickly and forgot to check!) The original recording on the album 'Try Whistling...
Carmine Audio 'Belle Mère' mic demo

In the post today I received a microphone from Carmine Audio called the 'Belle Mère' (French for 'mother-in-law'), which is made out of a device which could be plugged into a phone line to listen in on calls. I had just learned to play 'Her Majesty' by the Beatles, so thought I'd whip up a quick demo of the sound. ('scuse the singing) They also make microphones out of full vintage telephone rec...

Silent Night - solo electric guitar
Просмотров 2365 лет назад
My solo electric arrangement of Silent Night, sitting on the floor. (Sorry about my pale, pale legs.) For those who care: Guitar is a Reverend Manta Ray HB, amp a Fender Concert, with a TC Electronic Hall of Fame reverb and Sub'n'Up octave (the latter very subtly).
Woop woop, You Am I. Not a frequent sight these days.
I dont understand the schematic. It shows 1 connection for the bridge pickup on the pickup switch . So i dont have to connect the ground to the volume pot?
Nice video! You were wondering about those extra holes between the bridge and tailpiece. They might be for the larger vibrato that came with the SA-50 of the same era, which is a higher-end version of this same guitar...
The originals sound highly preferable to me. Sometimes gilding the lily is just that...
Best jazz WR walkthrough, review and demo, it helped me a lot, thanks!
hey, i bought a wide range humbucker from a 70s telecaster, do you think i can use the stock pickup cover to mount it on my jazzmaster? im really trying to figure out how to do it...
cheersmate , got this as a chore to do, and you saved me loads of time
Hi there, just stumbled upon this video, I have a red SA-30T from 1967, absolutely love this guitar, it's my favorite one. Any chance you could post some more videos about it? How about the pickup covers, did you manage to get them? Cheers.
Hey, I'm enjoying your restoration thanks. I have one of these I'd like to restore too and I live in NZ. Do you have the website or email of that guy you refer to who lives in NZ and knows a lot about these? Many thanks, Rich
This model is made of poplar. I would LOVE to hear these pickups on alder.
Thank you for making this video! Was curious of how the new CuNiFe Jazzmaster PUs sound, this is a perfect demo! They definitely sound glassier and more "scooped" than the stock J Mascis PUs, while being less "compressed" than a tele neck pickup. I play jazz (as intended on a Jazzmaster! :P) and your low gain demos are very helpful to hear what the PUs really sound like. On a side note, the J Mascis PUs sounds closer to my Am Pro II (with Pure Vintage 65' pickups and 1M pots) than how usually people describe them, most noticibly how the J Mascis are not as unforgivingly sparkly, which i believe is contributed by the different valued potentiometers, 500K on J Mascis (i believe?) vs 1M on "original" Jazzmaster wiring.
Mascis usually have 1 megs but they're p90's not regular jm pickups
I have a Yamaha SA70 bass and cant find replacement bridge height adjustment screws. They dont seem to match any modern measurement standards do you happen to know what the measurement is for these?
@heldmusic wondering where I can find the spring and the base for the spring thanks
Just put a set in a mij jazzmaster. Did you ever adjust them?
Howdy, What was your go to pick up hight?
I think the new mascis sig pups are a better option for $130. The WRHB sound decent and hum cancel. But for that kind of $$$ I’ll look at other options like fralins, Novak, etc. but for my squire JMJM, I’ll be doing the Mascis sigs. FYI, SD does custom HB in JM bobbins for 200.00 a pup. Looks like a JM pup but you can have a JB/jazz or whatever you want underneath.
If you are putting different pickups in a J Mascis Jazzmaster, you’re missing the point of having a J Mascis Jazzmaster. It’s not supposed to sound all nice and sparkly clean and jangly. It’s supposed to be used with a high gain amp and a ton of pedals and sound awesome like J Mascis. Duh. 🤪
the neck alone is worth the purchase of this guitar
Do you have a wiring diagram with the actual color codes in the pickups? Like a picture posted somewhere? I just ordered these my self 😅
Ugly. Horrible guitar too. There are too many Squiers on this planet.
Lovely cat ... good demo. Thank you
Sounds like a proper jazz guitar now. Thanks for the content.
Hi, I'm doing the same swap in my Jazzmaster, just wondering if Red Spot pickup went in Bridge position & Blue in Neck? I don't have access to a multi meter so your advice would be appreciated, Thanks for taking the time to do your video!
Thank you! In the end I put the red dot in the bridge position and blue in the neck. Apologies for the delay, but hope that's useful to yourself (and possibly others!)
thanks mate! Got a Troy van Leeuwen JM with Vintage ‘65 pickups that are so noisy they are virtually unusable, so the CuNiFe WRHB should be a massive improvement, thanks again for your vid!
@@stephpride9374 Oh nice! If you remember once you're done I'd love to hear how they go for you.
I put Fender'65 Pure Vintage jazzmaster pickups in my JMascis and it was a big improvement a fuller sound in my opinion.
If at all able keep uploading your findings! I just came across one of these myself that needs some work and I loved seeing what you’ve found
Cheers! The project is still on the go, just on pause while life gets in the way. But I just got a 3D printer, which means once that's set up I should be able to finish the project!
Ok, but very ugly looking.
Dude the” umm ahhsss “constantly is insane. Sort that out. Otherwise well done.
I do understand what you mean, but while I'm still learning to make videos if they get any more complex at this point (like scripting or retakes) then they're simply not going to happen at all. Yes, this is a me problem but for now they have to be somewhat off the cuff which does mean the occasional um and ahh. Hopefully it's a phase I can work through.
Sleazy bedroom track huh? Good choice for the intro
I wonder how it would sound in a blues setup. I would like to use my jazzmaster to play blues and I'm not sure if this pickups helps. It possible a demo playing blues?
I installed these was surprised how low the volume/ output was compared to other guitar/pickups. Did you find this?
Man why you make a long ass video then give a bunch of "idk haven't had much experience with them yet" 😂 please do follow up and I'd like to see how they do in metal. More of a jazzblaster situation! Thanks for the video!
'cause I literally had only just swapped them over! 😛 I will do a proper video on just them soon, hopefully.
Why the disrespect bro?
This definitely challenged my assumptions on what I thought WRHBs sound like! Great demo, glad to see you're enjoying your guitar
Cheers!
I put Curtis Novak pickups and a Rothstein pre wired pickguard sounds fucking awesome
Keep the originals! Cunife is just nasal and thin!
Thanks very much -- now I know that these (pretty danged good!) pickups would be nowhere near enough of an improvement (if any) over the MFDs (also in the P-90 category) in my G&L Doheny to justify their stratospheric ($400 USD!) price tag. For about half what Fender wants for just these pickups, I could get a humbucker-cut pickguard and have my choice from among the hundreds of great pickup options available nowadays in that form factor.
I've always been tempted to try out a G&L, but they don't seem to be very common here in Australia.
@@heldmusic-- I should point out that the G&L Doheny shares the Fender Jazzmaster's pickup and offset body shapes, but it's definitely *not* a Jazzmaster clone.
After saw a lot of “pickup upgrades”… how difficult is to justify spend hundreds dollar when hear the result!!!
Those pickups are just too ridiculously expensive.
I mean, they're roughly in line with the prices for high-end boutique WideRanges, and perhaps the economies of scale that Fender *should* be getting are countered by the fact they're making the CuNiFe magnets again. (The alternative I was considering buying was a limited run MIJ Jazzmaster which comes with the full-sized CuNiFe WideRanges... but that would have cost me more than 4x what the pickups cost.)
@@heldmusic if I remember correctly the original cunife magnets weren’t anything special. It was whatever alloy they had around that was cheap and plentiful. It only became rare because cunife stopped being used widely. Not saying they don’t sound good. Just that there’s a lot of money to be made on things marketed as legendary like germanium, vintage spec, etc.
@@misubiYeah, it wasn't that it was some legendary tone magnet, it was just that they could machine it into threaded pole pieces. But it also does have a sound, and it's cool at least to try it out.
I'm a cunife fan, I picked up a pair of originals and they do sound magic compared to the reissues, they seem to have a more peak resonance, and harmonic sound. I get this also with cunife reissues, it's just more tame. Maybe just changes after 40 years? Legendary CBS era fender wildly inconsistent specs? Whatever it is I'm going to say there *is* something magic about the Seth Lover weak cunife but more winds. You can deep dive and learn the magnetic field pattern in cunife is a bit different.
Hello! I just wanted to jump in and say that Halon from Greece makes probably some of the highest quality offset bridges in the world and they make a direct replacement to the Tune’o’matic/ adjust’o’matic bridge with adjustable saddles to match whatever radius you throw at it. Plus you can customise the bridge with really unique materials to really enhance certain tonal characteristics. Hope this helps
I've seen good things about them! Definitely on the list.
I can't find this AOM/TOM? Bridge anywhere!!! What's it called? Please it's the only upgrade my JMJM still needs
@@erickt1974 If it's the Halon you're after, they're here: halonguitarparts.com/
Seconding Halon. I have one in my JMJM and it's great, dropped right in. I spoke with him on Facebook and he helped me pick the best materials for my ears. Highly recommend.
I have one
I noticed that there's shielding tape on the back of the guard. Were the pickguards on the J Mascis not actually made of aluminum?
I believe they are, but I think you have to scrape back the anodised areas to connect them to the body shielding - maybe this is a quicker and more reliable way to achieve that?
Thanks, not many reviews of these out there, and you did a very thorough job, the way you cover different types of music. I've been gassing for these since the great demo put out by Fender (but that player could make anything sound wonderful). Ultimately I think it takes away some of what makes a Jazzmaster distinct, so I'll try the Cunife/Cobalt-Chrome single coil set instead.
Thanks! I hope the CuNiFe/Cobalt set sound great, should you go down that path. (If you do and remember this, I'd love to hear your thoughts!)
single coil is way better
They're not bad! I'm still liking the WRHBs more myself, but I won't deny the originals are good (even if they're not "proper" Jazzmaster pickups)
Just so that we are clear, these pickups are more expensive, not better and certainly not an upgrade. They are a sidegrade. Your guitar sounds different, but not better. And of course, CuNiFe WRHBs sound even LESS like Jazzmaster pickups than the JMascis pickups do. Not that it is a problem, but do not think that you have made your guitar better or that it is worth more now. Hopefully you enjoy your sidegrade to the bizarre CuNiFe WRHBs that were completely rejected by the marketplace when they were introduced in the early 1970s and remain odd.
damn bro is it your guitar
To each their own, but I'm happy with the change. No, it's not night and day difference, but it makes me happier with the guitar, which is surely the point of any upgrade? And yes, they're expensive, but they're also bringing a magnet type back into commercial production which is not cheap! You seem to have a pre-existing opinion of WRHBs, which is your right, but there is a reason why they've stuck around and why Fender and so many of the boutique makers have kept making them. I like 'em, at any rate. 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Jeeeeez. Where did the WRHB's touch you when you were a kid?
I understand they weren't exactly rejected, but the CuNiFe alloy became nearly impossible to find.
Dude, it wasn't the CuNiFe Pickups that were rejected by "the marketplace", it was Fender's shoddy '70's workmanship, 3 bolt necks and oversized neck pockets that made it impossible to get tuning stability (in STRATS & TELECASTERS), but CuNiFe were never used in Jazzmasters before [which are inherently NOISY under Gain] , so the humbuckers can only be an improvement. "Better" is a subjective term.
I put a set in my vintera 60’s jazzmaster it sounds amazing
Yeah, I'm really enjoying them but I am curious as to the differences to normal Jazzmaster pickups.
I just picked one of these up and i love it!! It’s got some buzzes of unknown origins lol but that can be addressed. It however didn’t come with a case. Do you know if the dimensions on these are similar enough to a es335 that the cases would be interchangeable?
Lovely work there Mr Held and nice to see it all documented. I just realise that I should include a short description of how the vibrato arm should be assembled... The teflon washers go on either side of the arm, so you have the top one correct but the bottom one should 'move up'. I included two nuts (just in case), one with and one without a plastic tightener. The former one should suffice on its own to create enough friction to hold the arm in place but still allow you to move it sideways. If the two nuts work too as you showed, then no issues of course. Really looking forward to your pickup cover solution. I have two bare pickups that are in need of a cover 😁
Dude I have 3 lol. Thanx 4 the videos. Can’t wait to see you rewire it esp toggle switch
Thanks! Hoping that the wiring won't be too tricky. But first, gotta get it playable!
It's a shame the cover is integral to the pickup staying together, I dig the aesthetic with it missing. Orpheus pickups in Melbourne could be worth contacting about covers... Super knowledgeable guy.
Great vid! Thoughts on what the holes between pickups might be... Gretsch style mute system? Based on the era that could be a thing? Or... Somewhat crudely mounted piezo or alike pickup?
I think an extra pickup is unlikely, only because the electronics are completely stock standard (although the output jack plate is upside down). But yeah, mute or tension bar or something seems likely for at least some of them. (Why are there 5 holes though??)
Great stuff! I'd had this mostly worked out but never got that Bm in there quite right, I was close but it never sounded right! Try whistling this was a great album :)
Cheers! The key to this one was the live album Neil did with Paul Kelly, as they released a DVD of it which had some great shots I could use to get those last little bits!
Please do more Neil videos- this one is awesome 🤩
Cheers! Any tunes in particular?
@@heldmusic ok so my favourite Neil Finn songs are …anytime and Sinner.
That was a GOOD lesson. Many thanks !!!
