Simple solutions to making segmented turnings.
Jerry Bennett Art - Cirque de Bois
The Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus inspired this sculpture. It is crafted primarily by woodturning, utilizing the segmenting process. The circus embodies amazing colors and non stop movement. Cirque de Bois features the humble vessel as the star of the show. It is a tip of the hat to the regular performers and hands that diligently make each show a success. Wood was the best choice for this piece. New crafting techniques made it become a reality.

Hi there Jerry I have just made my weggiesled and I have to say I am so very grateful to you and your friend Dave muller for such a great experience it was to follow yours and Daves step by step instructions and videos it was simply great neither of you left anything to guess work I am looking forward to making the wood stop thanks a million.I really enjoyed the guitar tunes in the video, many years ago wheels used to be the music which was played before About Anglia(tea time news etc), it was so beautiful to hear it played so well, so i have to ask please do you have a cd with them on that I could buy ? I would be extremely grateful if you do. Thanks again.
Hi There Jerry I forgot to add we are in Spalding England thanks again and all the best Ron.
Hi again Dave sorry to bother you but my makiter table saw has 2mitre slots one on either side of the blade the right hand side slot was too far away from the blade so just made it to suit the left hand slot that should be okay shouldn’t it? I will give it a try anyway thanks again pall,Ron bye and all the best
Hi there Dave,I just had to email you to say thank you very very much for your video regarding Gery Bennett’s sled for making segments for segmented turnings,I tried several years ago and although I had a few successful small bowls I struggled seriously so I gave up,you can I bet guess my frustration when our wood turning club made one of the competitions a segmented bowl yes I was over the moon when I came across your video on making the sled and Gerry Bennett with the wood stop to set the length of the segments. You are both very skilled turners that goes without saying but the simple fact that neither of you have forgotten what it’s like learning you are both brilliant teachers I was never left guessing what you both meant thank you very much I have just finished the sled and i shall be following the video ofGerry,s wood stop tomorrow many thanks once again,Ron pannell from Spalding in England.
This piece is so pretty! I love all the colors and all the movement!!
SHOULD THE FIRST CUT HAVE BEEN ON THE INSIDE OF THE WEDGIE
Newbie here. Great video! Is there a way to cut the pieces so that when you glue it up, the grain is aligned in the same direction so that it runs continuous all the way around the ring (not alternated and no sanding the ends of each segment to make them fit)? Thanks in advance for your reply. Don W4BA
Hi Don, the trick is to use the segments that come one fence. For instance, what I do is trim with the upper fence and cut the segments on the lower one. Keep track of their order.
@@JerryBennettArt Thanks Jerry. So I could make the first cut from the "Primary" fence and then flip the piece that you cut off and trim it on the "complimentary" fence, correct? If the segments are very short, the trimming could be very dangerous, if not very careful and perhaps held down with a clamp of some type? Don W4BA
@@w4baham you do not flip the strip. Cut the segments the same as you normally would with a long strip but you are only going to use half of them so the unused ones do need to be the full length.
Only cut the segments from a strip long enough to be safe. You do not trim the segments after they are cut. By me saying trim means the segment does not need to be the full length if it is not to be used.
@@JerryBennettArt Thanks Jerry. I just need to cut some segments and see if I understand. Sure would be nice to see a video on how to cut the segments.
Very well done Jerry. I started segmented turning a couple of years ago. I've made about twenty bowls using my home made 12 segment jig. I made your segeast jig and watched your video series. Wow! You just created a monster. You taught me there are endless combinations I will be trying out. Thank you so much!
Jerry, thanks for all you do. I love your work and quiet and enthusiatic approach. I found turning at 60, and would love to take my work up a notch. Do you recommend, or conduct any workshops?
Did you set yours up to the right of the blade because you have a left tilt saw? I've seen others use the sled on the left of the blade
Thank you Jerry, for all you do to make our lives better! Lord Bless ! Beautiful voice!
Hi Jerry, just made a sled and starting to learn to use it. I keep coming back and reviewing your videos, but I am not sure if I am trying to learn the process or just enjoy your interludes on the guitar!! My favorite so far is "glow worm" thanks!!😃
The segment swapping reminded me of a magic trick
I was watching Jerry Bennet's video on Segmentology Tilt! I have the pieces made and they appear to form a nice ring laid out of the bench. I have yet to figure out how to glue together. Hose clamps or rubber bands don't seem to work as the segment tend to "lift up" as you add more pressure. Tried adding a weight on top as I tighten the clamp but that doesn't work either. Did I miss something in the video? It would appear that I need to glue them up as pairs, then glue the pairs up set by set. But I'm afraid I'd get the alignment off a bit and end up with a deformed ring. Anyone have experience or thought on this
Great looking piece. You have a great talent.
Nice tour....! Excellent Music!!! Bill Berry
Jerry, your mind amazes me. Your art captives me !!!!!
Red Skeleton would be proud.
Fantastic
He didn't show how u cut them. Ok I made the sled, but how do I use it???
You make the segments video and add your own music, too? You're a pretty talented fellow! I've been playing guitar for 50 years, but only just started turning a couple days ago, there's a lot to learn. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
9 yr old video and you are still helping newbies like myself Thank You Mr. Bennett
I have a question. I made a wedgie sled and it works great. Except. Say my ring width is 3”. Only a 2” piece will fit on the inside of my sled. Can I butt the piece up to the back side of the lower brace(since the sides are parallel)?
Great tutorial…..detailed where it needed to be. Can’t wait to make my own and start turning segmented bowls!
Can this sled be used to cut segments on a bandsaw….great instructions for building a sled
Your journey in learning is an inspiration to those of us that aspire to achieve a small portion of the talent you shared... Thank you for being you!!!😊
Having that blade above your wood thickness is a bad idea. NEVER BRING YOUR BLADE ANY FURTHER THAN THE THICKNESS OF YOUR WORK PIECE... Other than that great video...
Actually having the blade all the way up is purposeful. Cutting small segments with the blade down makes for very fast projectiles. Also a lowered blade combined with any tracking errors make the cut curved and the joints will not fit perfectly. The table is not your friend it will bite you when you least expect it, blade up or down.
How were the adjustment screws done?
Great stuff Jerry !
Hi Jerry I got my wedges from you yesterday Thank You! I’m new to this and I’m going to build a wedge sled soon but I have a question How do I figure out how long to cut the segment? I’m not good with math and the biggest ring I can turn on my lathe is 12”. Generally I will make rings 10” in diameter. To start. That will give me an idea how long to cut. If that makes sense?!? Thanks again. KB
It seems to me that when you marked the maximum lines for routing the grooves that you used the inside edge of the fences. Shouldn’t you go at least 1” beyond that so the groove goes the the position where the bolt will be when that inside edge is on that line plus a little
Brilliant indeed, Jerry. Plenty of food for thought.
Brilliant. I can do that. Thank you, Stewart, south west Australia.
As a 77 year old newbie to turning, I fancy I'm going to be watching these videos a few more times until I get the hang of this stuff, Thanks Jerry, Stewart, south west Australia.
Where can I buy the wedgies?
Hi Dave! Great video! I just wanted to say that I had a couple of "alterations" though... First, as I don't have a plunge router, I let my drill press do the plunging for me, then dropped in the router with the template and the router bit slightly extended. Works well, for anyone else who may not have the plunge capability. Next, I decided to use a regular 1/4-20 bolt at the pivot point. I noticed as I worked that the carriage bolt was already causing wear in the pivot hole, so by changing the bolt, the pivot hole has a smooth shank to rotate on. Other than that, no problem! Thanks again for your video, first rate!!
Am I correct that the rings are edge grain along the inside and outside of the bowl?
Yoda... thank you so much for this and your calm instruction - brilliant.
Hi Jerry... or anyone. I don't know why but I was expecting you to set up the sled on the other side of the blade? Any reason you set up on the right of the blade versus the left? And, as many have said here - super clear an concise film - much appreciated.
Is there a calculator for the needed length of the segments that calculates the size of the glued up segments? What is the length of the segments to end up with a 12 inch diameter?
Why lift the board each time and move it to the front side of each fence? Can't you use the front side of the back fence and then just slide it forward to the back side of the front fence?
You are a genius!
I am a canadian wood worker trying to buy a wedgie where do I go ?
Awesome video! You explained everything in detail and showed every step. Thank you for making this video. All I need now are some wedgies. Thank you again
I always love hearing your music. I sometimes watch your segeasy videos just to hear your guitar music. If it were not for your segeasy sled, I would not be enjoying my retirement making segmented turnings. Thank You.
Thanks Jerry this is a wonderful tour of the barn. You are an inspiration to me, even though we are on completely different paths.
what is the maximum segment length one can make with the wedgie sled? ie what if I want to make a 16 inch diameter ring with 12 segments. the chart calls for a segment length of 0.2679 x 16= 4.2864 inches. the saw stop won't allow anything longer than around 2.75 inches. I was going to make another stop that would allow that extra length.
Brayton, the great thing about the Wedgie sled is the flexibility. Simply change or modify it to accommodate the segment size you need. The concept works no matter the scale.
you are a man of many talents, Jerry. Very much enjoyed this video. Happy New Year, sir! 🥂🥂
As my cat is on my lap, have you thought about doing any small animals out of segmented turning?
Nice video, Jerry.
James and Sheila R love it. Great job and really shows your talents
