How to Grow a Big Apple Yield on Your Fruit Trees | Pruning Walkthrough
In this video, I will be showing you how to get a big apple yield on your fruit trees. I show you up close, how, where and why to prune your apple tree to help further your understanding of apple production and increase the size of your apple yield. Doing a summer prune encourages fruit bud development for next year, retains the trees shape, and allows light and airflow to the apples you have this year to help them ripen better and reduce the risk of diseased fruit. Removing this year's leafy growth will mean more of the tree's energy and nutrients are directed to improving this year's fruit size. When pruning an apple tree it helps to imagine the future of your tree's appearance if left ...

Can you cut the top of sea breeze bamboo while still shooting and it not kill the plant?
Hello, you can prune sea breeze bamboo, I wouldn't recommend cutting immature canes that are shooting as this can kill the canes you prune off, I only would advise cutting the mature canes that have hardened. Hope this helps 👍
Great Video, thank you very much! Answered all my questions.
Thanks for the comment Gordon I am really glad this helped 😁👍
Standing on the top rung of that ladder was no mean feat. You are a braver man than I. Bravo!
Thanks for the comment it's definitely easier as the hedge is tall so you have something to hold onto but certainly wouldn't recommend it! 👍
This was posted Aug 1st, is that the day you performed the summer pruning?
Hey Jeff thanks for the comment, I summer pruned this apple tree on the week of the 22nd of July as it was ready to be done. However I do have other apple trees I haven't pruned yet as this prune can be done throughout August as well. The key sign to look for is the majority of the trees leaf tips have hardened so it doesn't put on extra foliage growth after the prune. 👍
Do you ever get tennis elbow trimming
Hey Teddy good question, I have had it in the past from doing a lot of garden clearing jobs where you are grabbing, pulling and digging out weeds, shrubs and trees and doing lots of heavy cut backs. Since then I try to vary my gardening jobs each day or week so am not putting constant strain and stress on the same part of my body. So one day hedge cutting the next hand shearing you use different muscles and tendons with these two tasks, there will be some cross over but the best thing is not to be tense when you work don't hold the tool really tight be relaxed in the arms and hands then it becomes more effortless. Hope this helps 👍
Good work mate
Thanks Teddy much appreciated 👍
Our neighbors in back of us across the soft alley let their bamboo get out of hand. It spread into their neighbors yard, across a soft alley and into our yard and our neighbors yard. My wife and I had enough, we read up and fund if you cut it low and immediately spray heavy duty round up into the bamboo stalk as the sap brings the poison into the root. So we cut and sprayed hundreds of stalks and that knocked it out of our yard back into the soft alley. That was 15 years ago. every other year we have to repeat as the neighbors across that alley do nothing. One year the electric lines running through the bamboo failed and arced and the sparks started a huge fire. A house almost burned down because of this. First neighbor, original planter was sued and removed all their bamboo but their neighbor went free of having to remove the hundreds of stalks which are once again into the soft alley. At 70 years of age I am about done with digging and cutting and the removal of dead, cut stalks. so if you see it, get it early. If we had seen the bamboo and knew what we know now I would never have bought this house.
Many thanks for this practical advice
Hey Chris thanks very much for the comment your most welcome 😁👍
I really liked it. Thank you.😊
Thanks so much for the comment that's great to hear 🙂👍
How do you deal with heavy rain? We’re in Scotland and obv during winter get a fair bit of rain, I’m worried about overflowing.
Hello, that's a really good question, yes I can imagine the rain in Scotland during the winter months can be torrential. There are a few measures you could put in place some more practical than others. During heavy rain periods you could cover the pond or empty the level so it doesn't overflow (not always practical). Another option is to when installing the pond have medium sized rocks tightly lined up around the outside of the pond so when the pond overflows the rocks catch and retain the plants and organisms. Another thing is to have a buffer zone about a foot wide around the outside of the pond made of pebbles so when it overflows the water can drain through catching any organisms and most organisms will be able to crawl back into the pond from there. Other options could be using a pump to filter and remove water as the rain fills it up. Hope this helps 👍
Just a couple of pointers: Rather than pay a premium for "pond" rocks that won't alter pH, it's useful to know that any type of rock that isn't a carbonate (limestone) is probably fine. A small eye dropper filled with muriatic acid is the perfect test tool - put a couple of drops on a rock and if it doesn't bubble the rock is good. N.B. Muriatic acid is nasty stuff so BE SAFE! All volcanic rocks are by definition fish safe since they're inert. Silicates are also mostly OK - try to scratch with a knife - if you can't scratch it easily, you're good. All that said, remember that rainwater is normally soft and some species - notably snails and freshwater crustaceans do actually need a source of carbonates or some hardness in the water, if not very much, as do most fish, especially goldfish. As always it's a balance. Personally I'd recommend not putting goldfish in a wildlife pond - on the one hand they eat pretty much everything and on the other hand their needs are different and somewhat at odds with the water qualities ideal for biodiversity.
Hey Julian thanks for your comment, there is some really good information here so thanks for sharing this. Definitely agree on the goldfish in a wildlife pond, it almost doesn't become a wildlife pond if you put a predator like this in there 👍
you can do it because you soil is very light. And a fork is probably the worst tool for this.
Hello there,, that's really interesting you say that as this area where the bamboo is planted is mainly clay soil however with doing this method yearly with a fork and yearly mulching around the bamboo the soil has become lighter and easier to work. Initially absolutely was hard work but now the fork helps prize up the roots with little breakages where I have found spades can cut and leave roots in the ground. 👍
Thanks, I this is exactly what I wanted to see. Very well explained 👍
Thanks so much for the comment glad this video was helpful 👍
pardon me please but thiw tree is not properly structured you should prune drastically in the winter too much branchew one on the top of the other.
Hello, thanks for the feedback. When I first started pruning this tree I did some very heavy reductions to the branch system and thinning out since then I carry out a summer prune to spur on apple growth as I get a good high quality yield every year. At some point in the future I will be doing another winter prune to thin out some branches but overall I am happy with the tree shape and structure adding a nice feature to the garden. Could you describe how you think this tree could be improved? 👍
keep in mind that it does take quite a bit of time to get going.
It's surprising this has established really quickly if you watch the end of the video and I have a new video out showing this bamboo 1 year on and it's developed lots 👍
Very informative, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comment much appreciated 😁👍

Breaking them apart doesn't kill them?
Hey Linda it depends how small you break it apart, the bigger the piece the bigger the chance it will survive. If you want to split it and get rid of the bit you have split, give it to a friend or burn it would be the best option. Hope this helps 👍
Just subbed, great advice. Im just starting out building my garden and looking a cherry laurel or Portuguese to mask off a bin shed at the back.
Thanks Mark much appreciated, great to hear always a fun project both work very well for screening 👍
That's a runner you're dealing with there. Clumping bamboos have completely round stem, runners have a flat on alternating sides of the internodes. Either type will eventually cause problems, but clumpers much more slowly.
Good tips and nice everlasting educational video. I am glad you still have it up on RUclips for new viewers like me in 2024? 😊❤😊
Hello, thanks so much for your comment that means a lot. I know the audio and video quality is not the best but the information and skills are still valuable. Glad to have you as a viewer 🙂👍
Hi can i just keep these in the pots? and countersink them?
Hey Mark, yes that can work for some people the only issue with that is the bamboo may become reliant on you watering/feeding them over time as the pots will restrict their access to water and nutrients. 👍
@@gardenerstale Great thanks for your response, keep up the good work!
Thanks Mark 👍
Thank you so much! My tree is overgrown as I never learned how to prune in the summer. Thank you very much.
Hello thanks for the comment your very welcome glad this video helped you. I have a new apple pruning video coming out soon so that maybe of interest to you 👍
I know you mention about not topping them but is this ok to do if you want to keep them from growing too tall?
Hey Simon thanks for the comment I have actually done an updated video on this topic of how to reduce the height of bamboo do take a look if your interested. In this video I say don't cut the top of the bamboo if you want a natural looking bamboo plant, as by cutting the top it causes growth from the point you cut so needs to be regularly topped in the future to keep its shape. Hope this helps 👍
How long did this take you? Thanks
Hey Craig this took me about a day to tidy, then add on a bit of time to compost the waste removed from the pond once the creatures had gone back into the pond 👍
Thanks for replying. To confirm you are using shovel, pitch fork, and wood saw?
It's a solid metal fork, old wood saw and a spade 🙂👍
Love the video and will check out the summer one this summer. Question on the goblet shaped tree with the rot from a past cut, 30 minute mark. Do you need to chase back the cut to where there is no more rot?
Hello thank you glad this helped you. Absolutely cut all the rot out if possible. I do understand in certain situations where the rot goes into the main trunk or a main branch this is not possible, in that case cut out as much as you can with clean cuts. 👍
Next video: ladder safety.
Hey Brock I hear you I don't recommend doing this in strong winds like I was. 😁👍
I’ve about given up trying to get rid of the damned things.
I totally understand you it can be a real challenge to get on top of them but little and often and you will get there. It's also worth thinking about what to turn the area into once the brambles are clear so that they don't come back 👍
Mushroom shape ❤❤❤
Thanks for noticing, that structure works really well for an old apple tree, looks good in a garden as well 💚🍄👍
I have a bad back(bulging discs) any other idea or tool other than a fork to make my life easier please? I heard from some people there’s a strong spray that kills bramble quickly but I’m sceptical
Hi are these golden bamboo? What is the tallest they grow
Hello, yes commonly known as golden bamboo I have seen it grow to about 4.5 meter in the UK but I am sure it would grow taller in warmer climates. Equally I have seen it only grow to 2/2.5 meters high and not get any taller after being there for years so it really is situational. 👍
Lovely! And thanks for giving inches as well, for those of us slightly older
Hey John thanks for the comment your most welcome, sometimes it's easier in inches! 👍
Bruce from Seattle Bamboo writing here. Our motto is "we solve bamboo problems' and have almost two decades of dealing with these problems. We suggest that 90% of the problems we solve are human attempts to confine it and the issues. that presents. This fellow has a great way to maintain a grove and so his planting will have a longer "shelf life" than most. Bamboo requires space. If you need assistance with a project that will not become a huge issue 10-15 years in the future please feel free to contact us.
Hey Bruce thanks for the comment, great to hear you are helping people tackle bamboo problems. Thanks for the kind words I think with a lot of things they just need the attention and time looking after them but sometimes people let them get a bit out of control. Thank you I will keep you in mind all the best 👍
Do you have problems with black aphids on the leaves, I have thousands of them and I’m freaking out 😂
Hey Scotty ah no way they can certainly be a pain I have found a lot on broad beans (hence the name black bean aphid or blackfly) this year with the hot weather the breed like mad. Best thing is a soapy mixture in a spray bottle and that will kill them if you spray it onto them directly as they breath through their backs so it suffocates them. Just remember to check and spray under leaves if needed as they are good at hiding or follow the ants that protect them, they mainly are on the tips of the plant. 👍
Great tips. Cheers mate!
Hey mate thanks for the comment glad the video helped 👍
Can you safely top tall bamboo in the winter months, harvesting the foliage for animal feed, without killing the cane?
Hey Honey hollow if this is your running variety and it is established you will have no problem topping in the winter months just try to do it on a mild day for the time of year to reduce die back and allow it to recover. If any canes do die it will soon fill back in the spring/summer due to it's vigorous growing habits. 👍
I have planted running bamboo on my 35 acres as a browsing source for my goats. From what I have read, it sounds like they should be able to keep it under control.
Hey Honey hollow goats are really good grazers and recyclers for garden waste. They should certainly be able to slow it down, it will still spread with the underground runners so just worth keeping an eye on how much it travels. Fortunately having 35 acres means you have a big buffer zone, I would just mark an area out with sticks with the bamboo inside so if it grows past that area then you can always cut or dig it back to the original area 👍
Masterclass. The fact that this isn't scripted is amazing as the content is fully packed with all aspect and considerations you need whilst it is being done live
Hey swantonbombism thank you very much for your kind words and understanding of the video, it really is greatly appreciated 👍
Glad I searched and found this video. I have a strip of land at the back of our garden on the council / field side of a 6-foot concrete fence, which is about 40-feet long and 12-feet deep containing all sorts of bushes, small trees…and the dreaded bramble. I really don’t like the sharp, quick-growing stuff that seems to strangle all that it touches. I’m 53 now (sometimes feel older) and have some tools to fight it back most years but then it gets on top of me, as it has done towards the back end of last year and into this. Our council’s Parks Department have reluctantly put a work order in for it to be cut back but I’ve been waiting for 9 months so far as we’ve had lots and lots of wet weather plus they only have one ad-hoc team for such low-priority work. I did once pay a registered tree surgeon when the council refused to do it and I was desperate; it was someone we know and he did a very good job, which then gave me a good 3 years where I could then manage it myself. SO…having seen the bramble finally reach our fence last night, I’ve used this video - thank you - to motivate myself to ‘arm up’ with some manual cutting tools to start off with and make the 5-minute walk-round to do a reconnaissance and, hopefully, a little cutting back to see just how bad it’s got since I last had a proper go myself… 🙄 🤞 Thanks once again - good video.
Nice video👍 Any tips on preventing the discoloured tips on the leaves? I have two identical phyllostachys nigra and one seems to have developed brown tips and the other has consistent green leaves. They both have the same water nutrients. 🤔 (the Bambusa varieties seem more resistant to this leaf tip issue)
Hey Chris thanks 👍 that does seem odd what sort of positions are they both in does one get more sun than the other? I would recommend giving a nitrogen feed, even if they get similar nutrients one may need a bit of a boost to recover. Sometimes if one is in a more windy spot the tips of the leaves can dry up and go brown. That's interesting Bambusa like a hotter climate so maybe something to do with heat and exposure to the sun I imagine the Phyllostachys Nigra maybe getting a bit too much or hot morning sun which may dry the tips as that's the furthest part away from the plant and most exposed to this. 👍
@@gardenerstale👍 they both get a lot of westerly afternoon sun. (and they are in pots so they probably do dry out) (the Bambusa are in the ground and only get morning sun) 🤔
@@chrisc7262 sounds like that may be the problem. You could pot them on into a larger pot or build a wooden lined planter to help retain more moisture and provide more nutrients by giving them a larger amount of soil to live in. Yeah if the Bambusa are in the ground they have full access to nutrients and water not restricted by pot size so will be able to become a lot healthier plants. 👍
Loved this video as im about to move to my own place and am thinking about installing a pond, would love to know how the pond is looking now 😊
Hello Cornishcottagegarden that's really great to hear thanks for sharing glad this helped you. I certainly will try to get an updated video of this in the future 👍
Thos is invasive in new Zealand
Hey Greylynnjr thanks for the info, they do grow pretty fast and out complete other plants, I have seen it in UK woodlands where it takes over. Is there any regulations in New Zealand to remove them?
@gardenerstale hi. Yes there is. But nobody does anything really unless they are posh or informed. It grows wild around my area here in the inner city. Mainly in the undeveloped bush parts next to the motorway. Once I knew what privet was I cant unsee them. And they are a hearty species. Takes alot of work to kill them off
I totally understand you, I see correlations with other plants and social understandings on certain plants here in the UK. Once you know the plant you do see it everywhere. Thanks for commenting and sharing your info 👍
You should post more videos. Love your work.
Thanks! That's the plan, hoping to upload at least 1 video a month going forward.
Rule #1 - Do not plant running bamboo. Clumping bamboo is also a pain in the ass, but with regular attention and a very deep root barrier it can be controlled / contained.
Hey, yeah it can become out of control in most gardens so not usually advised. I have seen it before growing in larger gardens and arboretums where it becomes self contained (over a large area) because of the ground it is growing in can only support so much of the plant. Yes clumping bamboo is a better option for most people but does require upkeep. 👍
