Losi Baja Rey KING OFFROAD RACING EDITION!

Noticed that I don't have an electric basher at all and its time to change that. So we picked up another Losi Baja Rey for the channel. This won't be a track day truck, instead it will be a basher meant to recreate a Baja 1000 truck. Stay tuned, this is gonna be a fun build up and I have plenty of ideas in mind for this truck.

This is some footage from the Southern Nationals race in 2020. I wasn't too happy with the quality of the footage, so I didn't upload right away. I know its hard to see, but I'm the green back white front buggy with yellow wheels starting in 6th. It was overall a rough weekend trying to get some traction to the rear end, but failing to do so. Qualified in the C Main back of the pack (6th), made...

Certified rippers bro!
Dude, I swear that's my response every time my phone rings when I'm busy.
Dude! This is amazing content! I love the idea of a solid rear axle on a short course race truck! I’m not into racing yet but I’m totally into the short course trucks! Mostly making cinematic videos. You got a new sub from me!
just watching the other drivers in that race and id say it was your driving skill that won, not the solid rear axle, the other guys were all over the place
You aren't wrong. That track is usually pretty rough and demands good driving skill. The solid axle was more of a handicap than anything, but made it really fun!
When is the next time yall are running? Im in Natchitoches
There probably won't be any racing for the rest of the year, but us locals have been doing regular practice sessions out there. Look for 318 RC Lounge on Facebook to see what's going on.
@@wolf16731 thank you.
can i get some more info on parts did you use 410.3 or SL parts for the conversion
I used 410.3 parts for the conversion, but used the 2.1 hubs with AE axles. However, since the SCT410 2.0 has been released, I can confirm that all of those parts are a direct fit with no mods required.
Fire 🔥
Wait does that dude have one arm?? 9:00
Lol, yeah and he can still wheel a car around the track pretty good.
Just picked up a used Baja Rey King Shocks edition from a fellow racer of my club. Poor guy couldn't dial in at all and ended up disappointed and tried to sell it on the spot after not being able to complete a single clean lap. Me, being the individual who needs pressure and stress to function, quickly snatched it. Your videos served as an inspiration and pathway to tune it stricly for racing. Luckily, my club doesn't enforce the wheelbase rule so I can get away with the longer wheelbase of the Baja Rey. It's gonna be a bumpy ride for sure!
Was this race an all 4x4 class or mixed in with 2wd? What were the other brands you ran against? Love the video!!!
All 4wd, trucks were a mix of Losi SCTE, Traxxas Slash, and I think a Tekno SCT410.3
I’ve beat the living crap out of mine and the only thing that I had to replace was the steering servo. If someone could only find a way to fix the constant traction rolling.
Looks great, I want to shorten my Baja Rey just to fit simpler bodies. This is awesome info.
Cool video man, not a nitro fanatic but that thing looks like itl be fast. Left a like and subscribed. I recently have been posting rc content as well if you wanna check it out 🤗
I've done a few races with it and so far it's been pretty consistent, but I haven't been able to really let it stretch its legs because the track has been extremely rough the past couple races.
What body is that?
Proline RAM 2500 SCT
By chance would you have the lengths of the lower trailing arms and the upper rear links to do the conversion?
Nobody ran nitro
Not enough showed up, and I forgot my fuel at home.
I hate I missed that one, looks fun running backwards with no marshalls out there 💪💯💪💯
What's the finished wheelbase of the losi baja rey?
Is it easy to put a standered short course body on a baja rey
Only mod you really have to do is Axial Yeti length trailing arms to fit a sct body, as far as I can remember.
@@wolf16731 thanks i really wanted a f100 body but wasnt sure
So much money invested and it wouldn't even clear double jump🤣🤣🤣. Keep dropping hundreds into this bottomless money well called competition RC, brother...
There was some driveline binding on that day. Don't worry, it clears jumps and has won some races. I don't know of many hobbies that aren't money pits, but thanks for the motivation.
No pun intended. Sympathy comments to a fellow racer.
It took me 5 attempts to finally make rc8t3.2e stop falling apart, while trying to clear consecutive laps on similar track.
@@mayhemrcworx621 I have plans to make the truck even better. The center driveline and front suspension is a major issue. The center gearbox is a 3 gear gearbox with steel gears. If I put a 4300kv motor in the truck overheats from the weight, so I have to run a 3500kv to make up for it and takes away my top end for jumps. Also, the front end geometry is largely unadjustable for things like castor, camber, and other things. I have some craziness in mind to come.
@@wolf16731 😈
Nice run! Mine nosedives badly. I haven’t been able to solve that problem yet. Today I’m adding weight to the rear to see what happens. I’m sure that’s not going to be the best move but it’s definitely weight bias towards the front. I’d rather take weight out of the front than add weight at all but I’m not sure where I can loose weight or if that’s the solution. 🤔 Any advice guys/gals? 🙏😉 I’m only backyard racing but it’s a pain atm.
Punch the throttle before you hit the ramp don’t have it on full going into it it helps a lot the fly flat
Its all in the links. Find a way to raise the rear upper links at the axle or lower them at the chassis mount. That will tilt the upper link to lower arm angle towards anti squat which will help prevent the truck from bottoming out your shocks on launch as the stock geometry has a lot of pro squat built in.
I would love to modify my baja rey like this!!!
Nice work keeping it on all 4's. Solid axles take a lot of skill to use successfully, especially racing. Ive got 3 solid axle trucks myself (5 if you include the TRX4 and the Losi LMT, but im talking about solid axle rear and IFS front) and they are a handful at times. Mine are the UDR, Super Baja Rey V1, and the V1 Super Rock Rey. The SBR is the easiest of the three then its a tie with the UDR and SRR. Ive never used any of my RCs on a track, yet. Maybe one day. Ive got 17 total and only 4 of them are race ready out of the box. The 5ive T, DB Pro, Mini B and my boat. Guess all of them are "race" ready, but im considering race ready as the amount of tune ability in suspension geometry. Being able to adjust camber, caster, toe, shock and arm mounting angles and positions, thickness of sway bars, etc etc. I plan on getting the Losi 8ight XE Elite and if i race, that will be the one i use.
great video bro
I’m thinking about converting my Baja Rey into one like yours. What are you running for diff oil and are you running a locked rear or open rear diff?
I'm running 7/7/5 fcr for diff oil, no locker
@@wolf16731 awesome. Thank you that will help me get mine dialed in a little bit. It’s fun to run now, but a little more stability on tight corners would be great.
Thanks for the video! I would like to start in short course competition. You think that Baja Rey would be a good truck for racing? What other truck you advise?
Glad you enjoyed the video. I would not recommend the Baja Rey to get started in racing. It was more of a project born from a joke that surpassed all expectation. You can always get started with a Traxxas Slash 4x4 as parts support is literally everywhere, but I always recommend either the Losi SCTE 3.0 or the Tekno SCT410.3 trucks. Both are using designs inspired by 1/8 buggies, are stupid strong and reliable, and perform exceptionally well everywhere without needing to be upgraded.
@@wolf16731 thanks!
Yeah, this is just superior skills on display here. That guy could take any one of those vehicles and win.
What tires yall running on baja rey
I run AKA tires on the green race rig, the King Baja is currently on Proline BFG tires.
@@wolf16731 thank you looking for firmer on baja rey.. gna chexk out the bfgoodrich
@@Gooche No worries, the KO2 is a bit tall of a tire and will rub a tiny bit. Same with the Hyrax. Proline does have another scale 2.2/3.0 tire that would do well and is a little closer to the original tire size, the KR2 and the Icon. Any of those tires would be good choices.
@@Gooche but if having a scale looking tire doesn't matter to you, you can't go wrong with Trenchers.
@@wolf16731 gonna look into the icons & kr2, cus i know there is different bfgoodrich.. thank you for explaining that the ko2 are a bit taller.. i know they also have km3 i believe
I asked some questions on your running video. I apologize for the criticism. All my questions were answered and I'm saving your video. As far as your build, it's brilliant. I have never set up a solid rear axle to go fast but yours looks very interesting. If it helps, I'm still running the stock suspension but have 20w in the front and 60w in the rear.
No worries, bud.. It almost sounds like you are trying to slow the rear end suspension in an attempt to get it to take a traditional jump correctly. I can 100% confirm that the correction for that is with the anti squat adjustment, not shock tuning. For me with shortened trailing arms, the answer was the 1/2" drop spacer on the chassis upper rear link mount and the top hole on the Losi 4 hole upper axle mounts. That should allow the weight transfer to be transferred to the tires instead of the springs and prevent bottoming out on power taking off from the jumps. Stock geometry is tailored heavily to pro-squat, compressing the suspension on power and giving you very little travel to absorb the takeoff brunt of a jump, causing the suspension to bottom out and donkey kick the truck into an uncontrollable front flip behavior.
Are you sure it's a baja rey? Looks more like a tenacity? I have both and still working on the br to get it to handle as good as the tenacity. Very nice track and great driving!
I'm sure! Next time I'll make sure to prove it's a Baja Rey with the camera before and as I put it on the track.
Stock electronics? 2 or 3s?
2s through a Tekin RX8 esc paired to a Tekin Pro4HD 3500kv motor, Tekin T250 servo, and Futaba 7PXR radio.
Losi Baja Rey Raptor 1/10 is my favorite truck so far. Also run a Mojave v2. -Buying a 3rd baja rey v2 spektrum smart version when its released 💙 going to be a parts queen.
I don't think I really have a shelf queen. Closest thing to that I have is probably my HPI Mini Trophy.
Great driving man.
All that knowledge and experience..and it shows!
Awesome
It looks like y’all had a great time! I’ll come out soon as long as I’m not drowning in yard work again. My LMT and dementor need to stretch their legs 😄
Hopefully I'll have a wider ramp built by then like I promised last time! Oh, and rebuild the Savage front end and do something about that Baja Rey tire carrier..
Great build! You should consider making this conversion into some kind of a kit for those who would be interested in making a realistic scale sct out of a Baja Rey.
Thanks for the kind words. The thought had crossed my mind at one point, but for now I'm leaving nothing hidden from the camera on how I built this truck so others can replicate it themselves if they want for their trucks.
Im tying to get the big bore shocks on my Baja Rey Raptor. The back fits but i need something for the front. Do you have any recommendations? Also with the aluminum shocks do you need a ball pivot joint on the front?
In one of my more recent videos I show how I bought the shock stand offs for the buggy that the shocks I'm using came from, and used those with some carbon fiber plates as an adaptor for the front tower.
Man...I remember that paint job from 21 years ago on my xxt
⭐️Great video.Excellent RC⭐️👍#12
I have a question what weight diff oil are you using for the front center rear?
7k/5k/3k (f/c/r)
The SSD 3rd member doesn't fit the V2 axles, they got a little beefed up section next to the axle bearings, I did pick up a V1 axle and going to throw the 3rd member on that and keep it as spare until I smoke the pinion bearings.
I didn't realize the axle changed. I'm going to have to take a closer look at mine and see what's up.
@@wolf16731 Me either, well until I tried to install that 3rd member, I just picked up a Raptor Rey and while some things are a step in the right direction a few are a step backwards, its a decent amount heavier just on the body, time will tell.
@@wolf16731 I contacted 3 hobby shops including Horizen looking for a V1 replacement axle. Got two replacement axles and both are the V2, I am going to see if I can cut out and modify the V2's to accept the 3rd member. I am curious to see how you go about getting that 3rd member installed.
I will more than likely cut very carefully.. 😆
Just got my SSD parts in for the King truck and the third member I got bolted up fine with no modifications. Are you sure you picked up the correct third member? Part# SSD00177
They both look great
That's some good driving
Such an awesome truck thank you for a video of it on a nice track!!
Thanks, hopefully in the coming months when our race program comes back I will have some actual race footage.
Awesome... now I cannot wait to get one. However.. I have to learn how to pain my own :D I have to learn cause I just got a shell.
If you plan to race, I would recommend a Losi SCTE 3.0 or Tekno SCT410.3 because the Baja was never designed to be on a track, I'm just weird. As for painting, there are some good videos out there for that. I can paint, but detail work not so much. All I can say is scuff the body with a steel wool pad, wash the body with dish soap and water, and spray VERY light coats with a lexan paint. You shouldn't even see the 1st coat, and the 2nd should look like more of a tint than anything. After 5 or so coats, you should be able to move on to the next color. Spray darkest colors first and back the paint job in white if you want it bright and to pop.
@@wolf16731 oh yeah getting the 3.0 for sure. I cannot wait. I did models before but I never did anything like this so kind of done it before but really haven't type of deal. I am SUPER thorough though so I'm totally writing all of this down haha. I will probably watch 45 videos as I am doing it. Totally thanks for the heads up. As soon as my facebook hiccup stops I am going to post all my stuff to the page, atm though I cannot
@@reepaify careful use of a heat gun really speeds up the process while painting. Usually you can minimize the down time between coats down to a minute or two.
Your videos and super informative bud. Keep up the good work.
Glad you like them!
Great info, the rear cage brace your running looks like some SCx10 links? Such an interesting build thanks for sharing.
Forgot to mention those. They are Incision upper axle links for the Baja Rey. I simply recycled them into the cage when I didn't need them for upper suspension links anymore.
Love the vid I just got my self a Baja Rey keep the videos coming
Its a fun truck out of the box! A steering servo and aluminum servo arm is all it needs as a basher, the SSD front diff housing and rear axle third member is all it needs to be a reliable basher. I just went overkill for racing. Right now we are in the rainy season so race videos will be a while, but I'll get some other content on here.
I am going through the process of figuring out how to shorten my wheelbase. Without seeing your videos first I picked up a set of upper and lower links for the Axial yeti knowing these are a tad shorter. Any advise if you were to do the drive shaft again? I haven't dug into it yet but I thought I would be able to just shorten the driveshaft by cutting it? This is great content man we need to get you a studio light asap lol.
If you are going Axial Yeti short, you might be able to get away with trimming stock driveshaft. Any shorter or for reliability sake, I went with SuperShafty.com and chose a custom length MIP X Duty driveshaft. It will require modding to mount up to the outputs of the center diff and the input of the rear end.
