Nope, swords were all-around weapons, can stab, slash both edges. Hammers had adventage of puncting with great power and it was good against plate armour (well, can penetrate). But so-so skilled swordsman can easily outperform blunt warrior by some half-sword techniques. What hammmer warrior woul do when engage close combat and can't swing with his weapon, swordsman can stab with point of his sword and every full plated armour has some unprotected spaces between plates.

I mean yeah, no shit. Most people in combat wore armor that protected against slashing and piercing damage, so striking/blunt damage needed to be used to damage the armored combatant instead, unless a gap could be exploited.
