There's this Canadian kid that does crazy nice work and lots of notches, brackets and such, Make It Kustom is its name. When he makes Notches like yours on the plasma table he doesn't completely cut out each piece and the weld it together, he cuts it out like 90% then he just has to fold the pieces over and weld it up. Looks pretty slick having just one piece of steel before welding. Don't know if you know what I mean or if there's a reason why you don't like doing it.

Downhill welds? I'm a 20+ year lead fabricator/certified welder, and no place I've ever worked has allowed downhill welds.
