Christmas Eve Rehearsal using Pearl Mimic Pro
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.6 лет назад
This video is about my rehearsal before Christmas Eve concert. I utilize the Pearl Mimic now in place of the Roland module and love the sounds. I didn't go for perfection since it was last minute and wanted to put something up. Obviously I made mistakes but that is what rehearsal is for and I wanted people to see both my mistakes and some of the issues still with any electronic drum kit. My sof...
Pearl Mimic Pro Church Performance

This video is about Pearl Mimic Church Performance. I am using the iPhone mic for the music and my MacBook for the drums. You will hear a noticeable delay or the music sounds off because of the iPhone picking up the reflection from the back wall.

The Very Late Review of my Mapex Round Drum Throne after a year of use.
And on another note, wow! I did not know they made drums like this! I suppose one great benefit is not making your neighbors mad, haha!
Hey brother! Sorry I did not respond to your comment earlier and now it doesn't let me respond. I wanted to reach out to say I'm with you 100%. When I was in high school I played electric guitar and wrote my own tabs and lyrics, always dreamed of making a band but the difference is that I wasn't so talented or driven, as I'm a multi-faceted creative person and it's hard to get to a high level of skill if you're a "jack of all trades" (master of none) unless you're a prodigy, which I'm not. So with AI I understand the fear and drawbacks, but I'm learning to see if as a new medium, a different kind of music, not on the same level (ontologically is lower), but as a new form of art. As long as you're doing what you consider God wants of you, and you praise Him with what you got, I think that suffices. And if you'd even want to do a sort of cover for any of these songs, let me know! God bless!
I see it’s been 5 years since you posted this and I’m curious about the longevity of this kit, if you still have it. Thank you
It was great and still running until I left that church about 2 years ago. It was like new still and played great but the church wronged my friend and sold it behind his back. (The kit was his and on loan) Long story but I warn everyone not to loan stuff out even to your friends. Everyone I know who has lent/loaned lost or received damaged gear back. I have been thinking of making a new video of my dissatisfaction of the church especially in music and a few other topics but I don't know how to cover it and answer all questions that may come up yet. I do not want to discourage people but people need to understand to watch yourselves also. I really miss that kit and playing music.
Sorry for late response
Which is best? This or Roland vad 506? I know the mimic pro is superior but is the digital snare, vh 14 hihat, and digital ride woth goi g for the Roland? Thanks
I haven't been able to play any in two years and cannot give a reasonable answer. My best is if you already have a E kit then save money and get the Pearl Mimic Pro since it can use most pads and for me it's about sound and feel and I could play normal even on Pearl. But that is my 2 cents. Sorry for not having more info to give but it comes down to money for me at this point.
great job with cajon playing! I'mma order one for our church for the new year! God bless!
Thank you and God bless you too.
EVERY throne with a quick adjustment that I have ever checked out, whether threaded rod or pneumatic, wobbles at both ends of the post. The Mapex T670 has a locking height adjustment with a memory lock that eliminates this post wobble irritation.
It doesn't work on this throne and other Mapex thrones. This is one of my few complaints with Mapex. I used DW and Tama and never had this problem or to this extent of wobble. I mean this thing is like annoying how much travel it has and it clicks loud. The Tama I played in past was 5 years old and barely wobbled if it did and it wasn't enough to throw you off playing but this throws you off playing because it will wobble hard and loud.
Thanks for the video, are the top and bottom mesh heads both dual-ply?
Yes.
The issue Markus z had
I know this was 4 years ago but did you solve the issue with edge not working with the Mimic because I have the same issue, no signal in the Mimic for the edge sensor?
Hey - my hi hat doesn’t seem to recognize that it’s open or closed at all - any idea on what it might be?
if you are using a hi hat with a power cable make sure it is on. If it is off I usually only had open sounds. Without seeing more of what the issue is I have no answer and I don't want to tell you things you may have already done like check if its the right pad and right TRS cables.
And sorry for the year late reply, I haven't received notifications for some reason and I have been in hiatus for awhile. I am sorry.
Great stuf. Cheers.
Thank you! Cheers!
I always though Mapex were the tops until I got one and found it could be locked or rock around while swiveling. Why can't they have a simple bearing that allows for rotation without becoming unstable? Not rocket science, surely!
So it rocks you say? Great! I will get one
Thank you for the good video. I'm also thinking about buying ATV. I heard that cymbals and hi-hats break down easily. What is the durability or response of the drum? Especially, I'm curious about cymbals and hi-hat
Sorry for such a late reply. They hold up like Roland but you may have found out that right now they are not sold in North America because they have no distribution in this region. I think you can still order them in Japan and Europe.
Hi, what kit would you recommend to buy my 10yo son to play in the apartment?
I am sorry for not replying sooner. I no longer have time to maintain this channel and work two jobs. Justin at 65 Drums has a great video on this. If you are not sure I heard Alesis is the cheapest but sometimes has issues but it is better than some of the off brand companies. Yamaha and Roland are better but can be expensive. I recommend not spending a lot to make sure he sticks with it.
@@robertlucas9867 no worries. I got him an Alesis set for about $1200.
Which lp cajon kick pedal? Just want to make sure because some won't fit this cajon! Sounds great!
I don't remember. I am no longer attending this church and I can't recall what model it was. Sorry.
Where can I get a owners manual for MIMIC PRO?? IS IT ONLY AVAILABLE AS A DOWNLOAD?
Download only.
Thanks for your clear and honest review. Mapex is off the list
looking forward to trying this cajon this Sunday. just ordered one today.
MEINL Sub CAJON I think. A little bigger and more bass. The sound is recorded from my iPhone so it’s more accurate. The sound team at my church are self taught and add to much bass to the kick mic making it sound like a boom box which is why I used the iPhone instead.
@@robertlucas9867 I seen your comment on another page about music and how it affects animals, so I looked you up a man name Schreckenberg and Bird did a study years ago, on how rock and roll damage the brains of mice after having the mice listen to rock music during an eight week study, they said the music caused the brain damage what do you think?
Ive got the 755 model,same issue,very annoying
How do you find it after the june 2020 update?
What do you mean? Pearl website has newest OS and updated sound library with one shot samples for free.
Robert Lucas Yes, They said also the update has improved response from the atv 14 hihats, I wonder if you noticed an improvement?
Its the best kit i ever played! I have the same setup atv and mimic triggered via a td50 its a ultrarealistic sound ! ,thanx for the video. - GOD bless you !
It looks incredible, but it also seems too expensive!
That's true!
I dislike how expensive Roland is too. The cost of making pads with plastic is not expensive as people think and the piezo pickups you can buy cheap. It's ok to make a profit but the kits nowadays are too expensive.
your kit is sooo cool
Hi sir, blessings from the Lord. Can I humbly ask for your settings? I too am using PMP + this ATV hats. God bless you!
Oh, posted to soon. You have the settngs here already. Thank you, sir!
It’s been 2 years since I posted this but I discovered the VH12 for this old kit had issues which caused the hi hat mistriggers. I didn’t have problems Once I switched to a VH11, Alesis Strike hats and now ATV 14” optical hats
I have the ATV hi hats. Is there a way to adjust to "open" volume without effecting the closed sound? It seems like my open is WAY too loud compared to the closed stick strike sound. Thx
I don't know since I haven't had that problem. I would assume either under settings for triggers or under Mod tab in Mixer section but since I am not experiencing this I am not sure where to begin.
thanks robert explained exactly my problems with the vh12 and the mimic (no splash at all) and "jumping volume" from half to full open, thanks again
You know anyone with a small lathe? they could fix that. Or you could shim up the inside where it slots into the seat section. The rocking (might be a couple of things together but...one will be because that pole and the hole it goes into, aren't a tight enough fit. Try getting some brass shim material and wrapping around the pole then slide it in. Don't use tape, it'll just work loose again. Nice to know. Thanks for reporting it. I'm thinking of buying a used one myself. If I do, I look at awork-around and come back.
I'm very interested to buy this kit that looks great ! Thanks a lot for your review.
Great video! I'm looking for a hi hat and considering Roland VH-13 or ATV AD-14. Which one do you recomend?
Thanks. I have limited experience with VH13 so I cannot give accurate opinion and it would still be a opinion. If you're using it with Pearl Mimic Pro, my experience and feedback I receive is ATV AD-14 is the better option. But it is personal preference. Plus the ATV is real size like a real cymbal. Triggers great with optical light.
4:08 I lost it when you said 'tupperware sound' Lmao sop true
LOL, I learned that from my friend who is a music minister. He always called ecymbals tupperware because that what they sound like without amps and he is right. LOL
Hows the kit holding out? Iv ordered these but im wondering on the durability
With two drummers banging on it, so far so good. Never had an issue except forgetting to turn on or off the hi hat.
@@robertlucas9867 cheers man im looking forward to mine turning up
I have all the Mimic Sounds (SSD4 Platinum Drum Library) on my Laptop so you can use the ATV module to trigger those I guess!
Yes but the Mimic Pro has one advantage, you don't need a laptop and midi cable.
why i hearing sound of hat is re triggering at 8:40
Flams, I am playing a Swiss Army Triplet so you are hearing the flams on the first diddle of the triplet.
This drumset just looks good.
2 floor toms for a church? thats a metal church or something? lol :D
Three actually. Metal!
Three actually. Metal!
Metal is the most passionate music style for sure, unfortunately it's seen as evil..... I honestly believe jesus would be more metal then anything else, he was an occult master, read the gospel of Thomas!
Lloyd Rees I copied from guys like Virgil Donati and Benny Greb having a side Tom/snare. Useful for a lot of things.
Hello, you seem like a good person for me to ask the question. Would you think the ATV 16 inch cymbal would be a nice ride?
It's personal. If you like it go with it. Alesis Strike is 16" and I think the Roland CY15R is around 15-16". The advantages would be 360 degree triggering with ATV.
well i wanna upgrading my ride and i think about CY15R or get that ATV cymbal but i am worried it doesnt fell "ride-y" women like and we know extra inch is really a big deal so just wanted to know your thoughts about it if it would pass as a ride on small e drum set @@robertlucas9867
jezusmylord it would pass in my opinion but still feel small. ATV is thinner also and awkward at first because the switch is in a little further than Roland and requires you to hit it more flat for edge triggering but after awhile it feels more natural to choke it and hit it in my opinion. I want to get my own set now if I could. But if you want that extra inch or two plus 360 degree triggering then ATV is the way to go. But if the 18" is close to same price I would get that. But like I said it is an opinion.
Well i thought about the 18 inch big boy but i have little space for my drumset unfortunelly so i have to keep it small, thats why i consider the 16 atv cymbal cuz its bigger than the cy15r but not big enough like the 18 inch ride that would look silly with compact drumset, probably gonna buy the 16 inch one. Thanks mr. @@robertlucas9867
No problem. I understand the space limitations.
You mentioned - No cables? Probably because the ATV AD5 supplies the cable with the module as part of the wiring harness (DB25 snake)
Yes, I think I mentioned that or mentioned it in another video its probably because of the module but the other reason I mentioned it is because if you buy the shell pack without module you will need cables since other companies usually supply cables with the pads but ATV does not. Also cables you need should be 15 foot average since you are running it along the ground and up the hardware.
Great sound! What Mimic kit are you using here?
Klaus Agerbo Sensitone kit with snare detuned -35 and sustain and release down to 1 sec. Hi hat detuned -15 and ride -15 or -20 I think.
Do u have 3 floor toms?
yes, one is to the left to make it easier to play certain tom patterns for me. I picked up the idea from Virgil Donati, and people like Johnny Rabb and Benny Greb who use a extra snare or tom also on the left for patterns so I don't have to cross arms. I think Mike Mangini was another inspiration for it.
Cool and different. Percussion is more than just drums. I liked it!
I’m so jealous. Robert do these drums come with all the cables to plug in to Mimic or you have to buy them separately? Thank you cheers!
No cables unfortunately.
The ATV module comes with a breakout cable but the shell pack comes with cymbals, shells and hardware only. So if you use another module like I am with Pearl Mimic you will need TRS (stereo) cables with one straight end into module and one right angle into pad. Preferably 10' and 15' cables since they will be run on the ground and up the stands. I am buying 15' feet cables for room to move around.
Thank you Robert!
@@robertlucas9867 Can I ask which brand of cable you purchased and where? The straight to straight arent too bad on price but those straight to angle get mighty pricey ... thanks so much!
percboy555 those angled ones are pricey. I just look for deals on Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Sweetwater, Kraft Music, I think there is a couple of sites dedicated to sound engineers that sell cables in bulk. Brand varies from Roland and HS but even those cables can get expensive. You can also make custom if your good at that. But as for brand I don't have a particular.
Hey, I thought these were supposed to be at your church 😂 I love my atv hats!
We are designing a new platform to put these on. One that is mobile when needed and has arms for people to utilize for pushing and pulling the platform and not grab the drums. Also be able to fold up in some areas so that it can fit through the narrow hall and door. Whoever designed our sanctuary didn't have musical and theatrical knowledge and made the rooms and entrances behind the stage limited and difficult to use so we have to adapt. I am not a fan of racks anymore especially Roland and edrum racks because they twist and get out of shape easily, the current platform has no arms or attachments to move it, people during the week when I am not there use the kit as a handle to move the platform which is terrible because it messes everything up and can accidentally push or pull drums off the riser. Also the platform was designed before I joined over ten years ago and is terrible design, shaky, studs nailed wrong and doesn't support well. Hopefully in January it will be there and I hope to have more videos.
PJ Herrel platform built now and ATV at church. I made a video if you haven't watched it yet.
Thanks for another informative presentation. I have my ATV hi hats dialed in perfectly now. I was so happy with the results, I traded in my VH-11s. Also have the ATV snare dialed in. Much better than the PD-125 and no more hot spotting!
Iron Giant I can't wait to have this setup at church. We haven't yet due to Christmas and making a new riser so I have to use the Roland kit and it makes me cringe now with the Hotspot issue especially on soft songs with alot of cymbal rolls and nuance but those Rolands Hotspot to easily. That ATV snare is great with no hotspotting. I can't wait to replace the Roland kit.
Great Vid.. I just got the ATV hats and still having trouble dialing them in. Question on hard hits for BOW and Edge. When you do the BOW hits, do you avoid hitting the edge of the HHats and try to hit tip of stick to the top of the HH?
Brado Drummer yes. I hit center (between bow and edge) with tip with a full wrist stroke. Then when I do edge I use shafts of stick on a angle at the edge.
All with the hats open or closed?
Brado Drummer I geuss closed. I never thought of that. I think I did it closed.
The Mimic is great from what I have seen and heard. I'm liking ATV more and more. Too bad their kits are very expensive too! I guess if you want high quality gear that works then you have to spend some money.
John Pietrolaj I agree. I think they are overpriced. Atv is coming out with smaller kits next year. I hope Pearl does too.
That mimic sounds amazing
Edge is not connected! Why do you capture the hard hit??
MarkuzP66 cup is not connected. All ATV cymbals are made to be used as crashes or rides. The hi hat top is a 14" cymbalthat can be crash, ride or hi hat. You just need to use edge input for bow and edge. If you used it as a ride then you already have a input for cup (bell) input. Capture hard hit takes the guessing out of setting up proper curve/velocity range because piezos can vary greatly and because people have complained that Roland is too hot even at soft levels. So capturing hard hits allows the module to read the characteristics of the piezo in any pad and set it up to your hitting style. After that you can fine tune the curve settings of the pad to your liking.
@@robertlucas9867 I meant Edge in the mimic! I have both and you can't capture edge triggering because there is no extra signal from the pad! You mentioned in your video to do that.
MarkuzP66 that's weird. Mine works. I'll have to think about it
MarkuzP66 I'm assuming you already did this but the only things I can come up with is, 1: is it a mono cable? Should be stereo (TRS) 2: ATV cymbals are hit slightly different on edge, am I hitting it right. 3: is the cable in all the way. 4: did I set everything up right in the Mimic. 5: maybe their is no sample for edge for this one. I'm assuming you already know and did these. I'm still thinking what it could be because mine works.
Robert L this is Strange. I just get my new Mimic module. I am sure that this was also not working on the old one. I use a stereocable for sure in the edge input of the hihatpad. I get no output when I hit the edge. Can you show me the mimic screen while you hitting the edge?
I was having trouble all weekend making this video and forgot, couldn't add was the fact this ATV Hi Hat comes with a power cord and is powered. The light indicates when it is on. It has a switch on the opposite side of the input jack. If the hi hat is not working or triggering just the closed sound, that is because it is off. It is also very easy to leave it on. Something new to get used to. Another option to increase semi open sounds is the HH curve settings you see around 5:16. There is so much you can do with module and it is very easy to work with. Having the bigger screen improves the work flow. The ATV cymbals are great. The drums are my favorite. I hope to have another video soon.
