The use of the phrase “semi-educated” displays the stunning bias of the speaker. The convenient economic position and the casual arrogance of the Anywhere class is a significant part of the issue. The idea that they should be capable of anticipating and responding to circumstances which they have no direct understanding of, and can only experience vicariously, confirms any suspicion that they are “out of touch”. It is interesting to listen to these musings, however limited their utility might be. Good luck Gentlemen, I have a feeling you’ll need it. I am certain that the rest of us will. .

I think the idea that those who voted to leave the EU were some homogeneous mass of ‘somewheres’ is fundamentally flawed, yes no doubt there were among the number the ‘somewheres’ but by no means all of the 52% and doubtful even a majority among the 52%. The Brexit vote was a mixed bag of contradictions from the ultra libertarian free market zealots to those that just wanted to raise two fingers to the gov of the day. To characterise it as some kind of rising of the dispossessed I think equally misses the point.

I know plenty of men who have avoided marriage and having a family precisely on the grounds they to keep what they have. On top of that, men have no rights over their own children and abortion in the uk is both legal and publicly funded which significantly negates the front end risks of promiscuity. And then people wonder "why is there a birth rate crisis?" "why are people not getting married?". State interference is so all pervasive today we don't even see it and yet large immigrant communities have managed to avoid such issues for generations and their families have remained intact and indeed have prospered because of major cultural differences we are evidently not prepared to discuss. For whatever reason, we have made social choices in the west over the past 50 to 60 years that, perhaps through state propaganda, perhaps not, gained wide spread approval and these are the consequences. People must decide the way forward once again.

Goodhart reminds me most of all, in his lofty, privileged arrogance, of my old professor who it turned out was an editor on the appalling Mankind Quarterly. I suggest you broaden your reading away from this truly horrid 'right view' and read Bevan's 1952 text In Place of Fear. It might save you from travelling down this road any further.

I hate this tiptoeing around like you are having the discussion but giving off the strongest possible vibe you will run for the hills the moment somebody calls you racist. You don't have control over whether or not other people call you racist. This pathetic, limp weakness in westerners where they stake so very much on the insistence that nobody else view them as racist - a variable you DO NOT CONTROL - is destroying our countries. Other cultures are VERY aware of this aversion that westerners have to being labelled racist and abuse it to the maximum possible extent, laughing all the way to policies that favour them and their families over the interests of citizens that should by all rights be prioritized first. By all means try to make the case that your views are not grounded in race hatred, but you also need to make very clear that you won't be changing them on the basis that anyone does view them that way; the problem we have in the west is that people make abundantly clear that any policy or action that any idiot on earth describes as racist they will instantly shy away from out of fear of the label being applied to them - this ironically has drastically increased the number and frequency of things being described as racist in turn, because of course it does! If you don't want a child to behave badly, you DON'T show them that you will do literally anything they ask the moment they behave badly, yet this is exactly what westerners do; they don't want to be described as racist so they show to the whole world they will do literally anything that is asked of them the moment they are described as racist. Until westerners toughen the heck up about this and learn to say they do not care in the slightest who sees fit to unilaterally describe them as racist, we will continue to get taken advantage of as a culture. Note that this doesn't mean you need to admit you are racist or agree with them; you just need to stop "pleading your case" and acting like you care or will do anything to prove to the contrary.

For better or worse until you have education reform in the United States you're going to have a giant country that will rely on a literate and highly skilled cosmopolitan middle class to do its engineering, science, officiate the legal system, and practice medicine. Simply, "stopping the flow of new immigrants" might eventually leading to a leveling out of the demand curve for wages in the service economy but that's not the critical issue-- the critical issue is how a country which is very poor and very rich makes, "fair and sound" decisions about which parts of the social economy have access to the means of upward social mobility and self-governance and which will be made a part of a kind socially diffused underclass. Your grandpa serving in World War I has very little to do with any meaningful consideration in these regards. What of whose with grandpas named, "Raghunatha" or, "Khan" that served in the British Royal Army in India during World War II? What of their, "non-commonwealth" children immigrating back to commonwealth countries? Are they a part of the problem? What of the descendants of Slavs and Russian that died defending the Soviet Union from Hitler immigrating to London or Manchester? These, "Skin In The Game" arguments end up holding no water. The fear that scientifying fringe arguments about immigration doesn't represent, "a serious fucking threat to people in general" in terms of things that could undermine whole societies-- this is the, "old white guy" fallacy that Carlson and other commentators make. The view that naive clannishness or organized tribalism as a dangerous racist fringe represents a mostly marginal threat to the social economy is sound-- that's exactly the point-- the, "real threat" of ethnic cleansing and, "real racism" in the 20th century came not from, "race idealists" but, "race science and sociological theory" developed in Germany, the Soviet Union (not to mention the United States-- see, "Spencerism and Eugenics programs") It's not the, "white power crowd" that represents a threat to the social economy as a whole-- it's a bunch of feckless white guys in their 40s and 50s going, "what? I'm not being racist I'm just concerned about demographics" that has the real power to undermine the fortune of many. www.eugenicsarchive.ca/connections?id=535eee377095aa0000000259

The British electorate never wanted ANY real immigration and it happened anyway. The current level may be characterised as 'mass' immigration but it is just the thin end of a very thick wedge. Immigration can and will be increased to many millions each year. And the world is full of qualified and skilled workers who speak English. India alone has gazillions. The prime Minister is and extremely young for the position first gen Indian and his wife is Indian. Seems to me half the young NHS doctors are from the Subcontinent. English being the international language is key. Of course they'd rather go to California but Britain is still going to be attractive. So 'Britain' as a state with a democratic electoral system will survive but the remaining working age ethnoBrits inhabiting it are going to face a lot of competition for jobs both high and low, and housing will become unaffordable. The schools and NHS will decline in quality. Wages will be be held down, may actually fall.

  • @gregvanpaassen
    @gregvanpaassen 4 дня назад

Worker shortages are propaganda by the ownership class. The problem is merely the unwillingness of employers to increase wages and otherwise draw people into the workforce. Economics 101, supply and demand, is the appropriate lens. There is no need for policy interventions. The AI hype, which is again propaganda by the ownership class to cow workers into not demanding wage increases, is an own goal here. At the micro level, people mostly report having fewer children than they would like. I believe that income inequality is a cause of this. When male incomes are highly unequal, women will hold out longer before forming a partnership, hoping to get a higher-income partner. And of course the longer they wait, the fewer children they can have. Equalising (male) incomes reduces the incentive to wait.

Humans, along with around 98% of all other extant organisms are likely experiencing their final decades, or century of evolution. Or have you 'thinking guys' not read the coal-face science on the current state of the biosphere? And why would anyone really wish to bring a new life into this chaotic nightmare, where the prospect of nuclear annihilation is ever present and where the biosphere is inexorably changing its state of equilibrium? Oh goodness. We have two choices ... See ourselves as 'other' or really understand that we are all one humanity. 1. We are ALL one humanity. We all blink, cough, and can tighten our muscles. Any woman can get pregnant by any man. Any child can be brought up in any culture, religion, language, part of the world. We use Distorted Mind Beliefs to deny and suppress this Truth and see ‘Us’ and ‘Other’. 2. We are ALL born naked. Every Woman knows this. We are made to feel shame or unsafe due to Distorted Mind Beliefs and denied the Truth 3. We are ALL born equal because the sun shines on each of us. Distorted Mind Beliefs deny and suppress this Truth. 4. We ALL live on one planet shared with the Commons (Waters, Airs, Soils), All Species and Each Others. We use Distorted Mind Beliefs as a reason to kill one another, The Commons and Species. BTW ...99% of all jobs are done by ordinary people and do not require highly skilled people. The vast majority of people arriving (or leaving) are coming from the dynamic global changes we are not paying attention to. If you think people are uncertain about new people, please be aware that the vast majority of people coming are leaving family, food, culture, what's familiar. It takes a lot of distress to leave your home.

What exactly do Left and Right mean here? The billionaires, their corporations and banks have never been wealthier or more powerful. Britain is the most privatised state in Western Europe. We subsidise private shareholders in the train and water companies to astonishing degrees. We bailed out the banks - or rather the people who owned the banks - at the cost of near bankrupting the country If you look at who funds think tanks like the Runnymede Trust, Stonewall etc etc it's all billionaire and investment bank money. Who's aiming to turn the property market into rental only? It's the likes of Lloyds The Right i.e the Tory party are the willing executioners of all that I can only suggest people drop these Left, Right labels as they only serve to confuse matters.

My main concern is housing. I'm generally quite an "anywhere". I believe in cosmopolitan societies. But importing 700K people every year when we already have a housing shortage is just absurd. That's roughly the population of Liverpool. There's no way we can build a new Liverpool every year. And even if we could, it would be environmentally devastating.

This country has been a net importer of food since the Thatcher era. We've already seen how many people suffered during the cost of living crisis. If we go to war with Russia and China and inflation shoots up again AND supply lines start to get hit, you'll see people starve in this country. And that's before the social tensions start to break out. You're not telling me the people in charge of this don't know the risks. Why else are the billionaires building bunkers?

Having lived in Poland briefly myself what actually happens is poverty at the lower end is so bad there and there's no welfare state that they don't have much choice but to emigrate. I personally believe that there are three purposes to mass immigration: collapse the welfare state which is already failing many British people (just check out the rates for Universal Credit and JSA); expand the debt bubble especially the private debt bubble which is owned by the super rich and break the homogeneity of the country. The evidence for the latter is in the remarks made by Peter Sutherland (WTO Director General) to a House of Commons select committee. For the former, Thatcher's advisor and architect of neoliberalism Milton Friedman said "you can have open borders and you can have a welfare state but you can't have both"

Wise comments from David re single parent families. I grew up with a single mother and they find it very very hard especially if the father refuses to support them even in opposition to divorce settlements instructing them to do so. My mother managed pretty well in the 80s but when the Tories started vilifying them in the early 90s (coincidentally when interest rates went through the roof and home owners were under serious pressure) she started to go to pieces. People won't believe it now but back then they actually stopped single mothers working more than one day a week and could only keep £15 of their earnings (1990 prices). It was called "the taper" and it was utterly perverse. They seemed to want to force them into full time work but of course there were still 2.5 million people unemployed so there simply weren't enough jobs. The stress that this imposes on a woman on her own with a child have to be seen to be believed. I'm not going to go into detail but I will never forgive the Tories for that and I was delighted to once be able to say that to Graham Brady, chair of the 1922, when he asked me to join the Conservatives

Simply put, the more genetic distance there is between natives and the foreign settlers the less likely people are to co-operate. People have an interest in propagating their own relatives and distant relatives into the future

I like the lens that the ‘anywhere’ ‘somewhere’ thesis provides BUT seeing how some people in these comments latch on to it as a complete truth and use it to BLAME the others for their conditions. This is sad and wrong. We could easily apply the forces of economic-geography to explain the unevenness of wealth and opportunity and power. The relentless competition and cooperation between Top Tier cities in the world is maybe a root-cause driver that shapes ‘anywhere’ and ‘somewhere’ attitudes. In a hierarchy of cascading wealth and innovation, elite global cities just evolve at much higher rates than provincial towns and cities. These cities create a type of economic gravity that has a tendency to draw away the highest performing companies and citizens to better access the resources they need to thrive and survive. The social media images of the elites at work and at play from these top cities is a powerful draw for poor people in broken, corrupt, and crime ridden, climate ravaged places in the global south who dream of a better life. If you want to fix the quality of life in your somewhere community we need to rewrite some key laws but also think about being generous to help fix the really broken places.

Seems to me there are a few sources of ultimate meaning 1) God and religion 2) identification with the future of your family 3) identification with your ethnic group. 4) identification with the beautiful. The post modern left and the neo-liberal economy has deconstructed and demoralised all these things

It is not simple a question of knowing about history. It is a question of whether you are orientated positively toward your ancestral inheritance and want to see it continue. Our elites seem to think that any white person who has an ancestral component to their national identity is evil

It’s very sad to see vast housing estates on the perimeter of towns where all the houses are mock georgian and mock victorian, but smaller (of course). I don’t think there’s much “architecting” going on with such buildings. Such housing estates have no community assets such as shopping centres, community centres, transport hubs, doctors surgeries, youth clubs, playgrounds, sports facilities etc. They’re just satellite commuter banks. Meanwhile millions of properties within our crumbling towns and cities go empty or under-occupied. We need to stop building so many poor clones from previous styles and start to allow much more individualism in design. It would cost more money though. And planning departments are wedded to something called “the regional vernacular”. Which usually means that we end up with endless rows of mock georgian and mock tudor boxes. I’d love to live in something bright and modern and individual (not cloned) that’s carbon neutral, with perfect insulation, green energy and enough land to grow my own food. No one is building (or allowing the building of) that kind of home or estate, which average people can afford - not in my county, at least.

Not sure ' leveling up ' has happened with huge post Brexit increases in immigration and the resultant rent increases across the country . Paying an " immigration surcharge " of a couple if hundred quid a month is hardly what ' taking back cintrol ' was surposed to achieve

The behaviour of the universities in terms of importing people we don't want or need is utterly, utterly evil. The behaviour of Blair and co is equally evil. But everything Blair did was evil.

It has been obvious for 20 years that immigration damages the economy, and in particular the economic prospects of the working classes. Those who have supported all this mass immigration are truly, truly evil.

Well she was a free marketeer so her economics necessitated a welfare state didn't they? When the land was privatised by the aristocracy (a process curiously overlooked by property loving libertarians) and people were forced into highly uncertain wage labour in the towns and cities, you sank or swam. And many many good people sank through no fault of their own before welfare states were established. Look what happened after the stock market crash in 1929 - the hungry thirties. But what's at the root of the libertarian mindset is not only a total indifference to that but a quiet pleasure in it happening
