I just realized... The shell Mikasa is holding looks vaguely like a human heart, a heart made of stone. It is literally representing Eren's state right now. Seeing the ocean was liberation for everyone but it was also the thing that made Eren realize that his visions were true after all. It turned his heart to stone, his heart that belongs to Mikasa.
