What The Hell is Robert Russell Doing? (Artist Update from Early 2021)
I made a guitar, and took a bunch of guitar lessons...
Lessons:
The first 2 minutes are about taking a bunch of guitar lessons during the 2020 stay at home orders. I wanted to use the time as best as possible so I took a 3 month course featuring a mentor, ear training, and tons of exercises. It was pretty difficult for me, and was for sure the most focused practice I've ever done on guitar. ...Remember, I was just a sloppy player that just stayed on upright bass till a couple years ago when I made the decision to stop avoiding the guitar and get better at it.
The program was: Sonora Guitar Mastery Intensive
My Mentor was Amanda Monoco (She's Awesome)

Robert Russell: "That's Cat" (Cover of the KNBC TV Show Theme - Dark Swing Version)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 года назад
Apparently the original song and all tapes of the show were lost in a studio fire: OK, That's Cat was a kids show that premiered Sept 18th 1976 and it ran till sometime in 1979. (KNBC Los Angeles) The opening of the show featured the song "That's Cat" (sung by John Sebastian) and my sister and I would sing along. Over the years I would occasionally remember the song and sing lines from it rando...
Robert Russell: You Never Wash Up After Yourself (Radiohead cover)
Просмотров 3514 года назад
This is my cover of "You Never Wash Up after Yourself" by Radiohead. I've always loved the song and it is very appropriate for the depression of covid19 and having to stay home almost all the time. I have to admit all this is getting to me... I'm feeling pretty sad and a bit spacey. Anyway, it was always a very short song, so I made it longer and added some instruments to change it up from its ...
Robert Russell: My Pedal Board For A Vintage Inspired Guitar Sound Part 2

This is an Update to the experiments I've done with my pedal board over the last year. I've recorded over 20 songs, and I did not want to take the board apart, but definitely wanted to make some changes... so I just made a new board. (Overkill... I know) This vid does not have pedal demos, other than a small section of a lead when I had it in the studio. Check out part 1 for demos, or the demos...

This is my cover of Bury a Friend By Billie Eilish. I think it's a very cool song, and I wanted to see what would happen if I did it my own way. I started this cover in June of 2019... but it was not working well for me at all... so I abandoned it for a few months. It's a tricky and clever song in lots of ways. I restarted my efforts with it a few weeks back, and it seemed to work a little bett...

This is just an update on what I've recently done. I have 4 new cover songs and 2 of them feature strings and piano. They were a much bigger production than I usually try to do. I also had an amazing guest drummer for all 4 of these songs! I learned a lot doing it and it was really fun. This video explains a good deal of it. I hope you like it. Robert Russell: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat (Bob Dylan Cover)

This is my version of a Bob Dylan song from the 1966 Blond on Blond album. It's a 12 bar blues song, and I covered it just to see what would happen... (part of a series of experiments I'm doing) The lyrics make a statement and still retain a fun sense of humor about it, so that's why I have always loved the song. I hope you like what I did with it. Watching before I buy a similar Pango kit, I bet your stain didn't go even because you didn't sand it first - have to give the wood a uniform texture for it to absorb stain uniformly, that's why after sanding the stain back out it went on again easier 🙂

Dear Robert. I did a similar pickup system for my upright bass. Unfortunately I can’t generate a good click sound on the fredboard. Maybe the reason is, that I use a simple piezo-pickup from amazon. What pickup you using? Greatings from germany 😊

I don’t think what my pick up is doing is all that great either, but it could be the pickup quality. I was just using the pickups that come with the k&k rockabilly.

Sounds great, Funny I had the exact opposite impression that I did, you thought the Epiphone sounded better because of the rich lows, while I was impressed by how bright but mellow the Creature sounded, maybe the lighter materials let it rattle and chime a little more. I am also hopelessly addicted to diy/tlc, especially when it comes to cheap or beatup instruments. I understand the joy.

I kinda stopped… I have some neat stuff to shoot and share, but about 2 years ago, I was putting all my effort into a knob company, and that is sadly limping to its demise… neat, but I could not seem to get them made fast or affordable, and I had some quality issues too… then I got really busy with my actual job, and we had to move… so presto! Nothing. :) I might crank out some new vids in November or December. Maybe… again, thanks for the encouragement.

I would absolutely not purchase a guitar kit from this company! When I unboxed the kit and reviewed the body and neck. the laminate was buckled in 2 places so it was impossible to glue back down and repair. The neck had scratches on it that were so deep they could not be sanded out. When I sent an email and complained about the state of the kit they ignored me for weeks. When I finally did receive a reply after 5 emails they informed me that if I wanted I could send it back (at my expense) and they would determine if they would replace it or refund my money. When I showed them the photos of the veneer buckling they said and I quote "This is a diy guitar kit, no sanding, no polishing, For this little issue, it can be fixed by some glue easily". Which of course it can't. Stay well clear of this company and purchase from a reputable company.

nice work!! thanks for making a great demo - I guess I’m a bit leery of using stain or oil for a finish, and wonder if a lacquer or poly finish might positively affect the tone, although I have no idea which is easiest to use on a home-built guitar I was also curious about the fingerboard and frets… was the quality very good? did you have to file the frets? or had that been done properly by the factory ..? not suggesting you do this, but would be fun to build this kit using the included hardware vs same kit using better-quality hardware (especially the pickups) and a pro paint job

Hands down the Creature is better! Why? Because it's a true hot rod, and this is rockabilly, and that's exactly what it's all about, isn't it? I think much of the difference in tone could be negated by an eq or different pickups. As for mojo, the Epiphone is not even close. Any idiot can go buy an Epiphone out of the box, but man, you BUILT that thing...oh, one last thing, the beauty of a hot rod is that they're not ever quite done. You can keep tweaking and it's about the learning process! Which is awesome. Even if you call this one done, imagine how rank the next one would be! Glad you lost the pressure and had fun with it. I think it's AWESOME.
