GT86 Hampton Downs Club Circuit Track Day
Просмотров 1 тыс.3 года назад
Filmed at Hampton Downs in Auckland, New Zealand. This was only the club circuit which is 1.2km. The event was put on by GR Garage NSTechnical and HRC Events. This was my first time on the track so taking it easy and learning. It was not a race day. The beeping is my rev warning set to 7000rpm, the car revs to 7500rpm. It works well as an audible cue. Enjoy! Thanks, Hamish.
Nice watch
how tall are you bro? Im 6ft tall and thinking if I would fit on a Jimny.
Hey, I'm 6ft2. With the seat all the way back it's all good for me. People can't really sit behind me though.
where did the suspension get done and how much please ballparl figure mate
Motortech in Auckland. They were good. About $3k including install. This was a while ago now. I would guess it's gone up.
@@thehardshift thanks mate.
you deserve more subscribers man.
Do you mind me asking how tall you are. See you have the seat quite far back. I’m considering one of theses also in NZ but being 194cm wonder if they lacking head and leg room
I'm 188cm. Head room is ok but you'll find yourself ducking to see high traffic lights. With legs, it's also just okay. I've only ever felt discomfort after hours of driving. If you get a manual, I'm not sure if knees will hit operating the clutch, I haven't tried one.
@@thehardshift ok thank you 😊
28K in Germany for the basic version and without back seat.
20k km on 2 years !! That is crazy low i did 483k km on my toyota rav4 2022
I have owned one for almost 9 years, and I find this video 100% accurate.
Looks Good,I Had the Last Version of it ,Fitted With BFG Mud Terrains and Everything Else Standard,I Drove it offroad a Lot and Never Got Stuck,Lifting it Might Make it More Prone to Tipping Over So atch out As there Lively Little Things to Start With,But they are Very Srrong As My Brother Had one And Somone Caused Him to Roll off a Road as They Were Driving Down the Wrong Side at him at 60mph ,His Car Was Destroyed But The Roof and Sides Never Caved in after Rolling over a few Times.
I brought a 2023 five door Jimny xl, colour jungle green. What you have mentioned is on par with my experience. Nice reviews.
Awesome , your review make me feel how to drive new jimny....thanks, I'm driving a 30 year jimny long 5 doors, long wheel base, from indonesian karoseri Corsica alexander, the ultimate fun is he has panoramic roof, still in good condition until now, I use my jimny as my daily car, I'm so exciting to drive my jimny👍🏻
bro, How tall are you? How can you fit inside that car?
I'm 188cm. Camera angle makes me look taller than I actually am. It's spacious enough with the seat all the way back.
@@thehardshift thank you, I appreciate the answer because a I'm 1,90 and I really like this car and maybe I'll buy it when al try the space.
So mate should I buy the ome kit ? I am with the original set and I hate each short driving I am doing lately I need a proper supespension kit
The OME kit is a good improvement. At the end of the day, it'll still mostly feel like driving a Jimny though. If you really dislike it now, I don't know if the new suspension will dramatically change things for you...
@@thehardshift yeah fair point but at least if you're saying driving would get more comfortable and stable, it would be a huge step forward. You know I am currently driving a montero 1 Gen 1987 and on the road shake you less 😃
@@calogerodimino2694 You could try ask around in local groups to see if anyone near you had the OME lift already. Experience it before you buy. Some 4WD shops may also have a demo model to try.
@@thehardshift well I am going to buy I just need to find the best deal that ship to italy
I chosen not too buy those vehicles its not worth it for me to get one.
Hi. Have you ever tried to see what is the gas consumption at highway speed, say…130 km/h ?
I haven't tried but it seems going over 100km will have diminishing returns for fuel efficiency.
Good fair review. I test drove a manual Jimny a few weeks ago and thought it drove pretty well in quite windy conditions. As you said it’s relative to what you’re used to. I’m driving a 24 year old Mazda sp20 familia with 409000km so the Jimny is a step up. I thought it was pretty quiet also. The only issue is the small boot space and somewhat underpowered engine. Still deciding if I want it. Prices of used ones are coming down here in NZ.
This car is design for people who looking for a cheap affordable small off-road car … now if you’re a fast car guy you have your option you can buy BMW audi Volkswagen or any type of fast car …
Good to see a NZ review. I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a new ex demo this week. You still happy with yours? Any new mods since this vid?
Hey mate, thanks and yes still happy. No new mods. The car still gets used as a road car first and foremost. I feel I'm at the point where doing anything more would make it a better off-road car and worse road car. If you're buying a demo you could try negotiate for them to cover the first annual service. They change the diff oil so it's a bit pricey.
Smooth road test is useless on solid axles Jimny. Try to find uneven and chock full pothole road and you going to find the Jimny hops and skips all over the road. Lack of cup holders for both driver and passenger annoyed you, then don’t get Jimny! If you find the chair lack support, don’t get the Jimny as it going to punishing your back on long ride, the soft suspension will make body roll more pronounced. Stiffer coils and shocks will make Jimny bucking like rabbit so stay away from this if you easily get car sick.
Thank you for the very informative video, I’m looking to buy this for my first car, I live in Tokyo Japan, I will be using it mostly for city driving and commuting to my wife’s hometown in the countryside occasionally and transporting my cat safely. I’m not a confident driver and I’ve never owned a car before, mostly driving in my parents car back in the UK. Would you recommend this car for basically a beginner driver with little confidence? Thank you
Yes, I would recommend it for a beginner driver. It's small. Easy to park and maneuver. Tires are thick so you don't have to worry about damaging them on the curb. Also sitting up high gives you good visibility and will help with driving confidence. Get the car and practice in low traffic environments (early morning/late night), you'll be a great driver in no time. It will start to feel very natural very quickly to you.
@@thehardshift thank you for your fast response.
Hey dude! Hope you don't mind me asking, about how tall are you? I'm a big dude, just wondering what it's like to live with and you seem fairly tall. Cheers!
Hey I'm 188cm/6ft2. Headroom is not an issue. My legs are comfortable enough, even for long distances. Although, if the seat went back one more notch, I'd probably have it there.
@@thehardshift I’m 196cm/6ft5, will have to go have a sit in the 2 door and the XL to see how I go then. Cheers for that
Can you share which speakers did you installed in the back of the Jimny? And did you did the installation yourself or did you take it to a shop? Was it difficult to install?
Hey I ordered the brackets from a Suzuki dealership. This is the part number. 99197-77R00 = 1 pair of brackets. Then I took the parts to a car audio place and had them install for me. I cannot remember the exact model of speakers I put in. They take 13cm speakers. I also had the audio place add in some sound deadening around the speakers to stop any rattles.
@@thehardshift Thanks! and nice ride!
do you need a speedometer calibration when you replaced to a bigger tire?
I didn't bother. The difference will be small.
Great video full of info. I have looked at heaps of lift kits, a lot say get extendable brake lines extendable this extendable that bracket for the light beam, across bar extension to lift the diff etc. Do all these kiys come with this stuff or is it extras on top of extras? Thanks
I took the easy option and the shop that installed it did the extended break lines and headlights sensor kit. They included it all in one price as a package. I'm not sure about buying a kit as such. I know I didn't lift the dif. I find the dif scrapes occasionally while off-roading, I do have dif covers front and back to help protect though. Hope that helps!
@@thehardshift are you happy with your tire size, as in height. Has it ever hit the guards? I am looking at getting tires and lift done at the same time. Might save some coin that way. I do like your idea of keeping the stock rims. Cheers
Very happy with the tire size. Height feels about where it should be for a car that is used for commuting and the occasional off-roading. Never hit the guards. I think any larger and you'd lose too much on road drivability with fuel economy and power. You'll need a wheel alignment after changing the suspension so it makes sense to do tires at the same time.
What is the rear speakers model you've used?
I can't remember the brand exactly but I got the bracket from the Suzuki dealership and it takes 13cm speakers.
@@thehardshift Thanks mate. I assume you went for the Pioneer speakers as they are popular choice for the rear. And did you find them helpful as you needed lower volume number then with the 2 front speakers only?
@@boazrand262 yes, it was a very good quality of life upgrade. Now you can hear music in the back and still have a conversation in the front. Overall the sound quality is still not great though. Would need to add a lot of sound deadening to improve which is quite heavy.
@@thehardshift Do you mean hear music only from the back speakers?
did the lift kit and wider wheels help with the car getting blown around by the wind on the freeway? It's the only thing turning me off buying one of these!
The car still gets blown around. I'd say it's slightly better at recovering from it. It's still a box that doesn't weigh a whole lot at the end of the day. I've seen posts from others online saying they've added weight to the rear to help it but it'll hurt your fuel economy. In saying that, there's probably only been a handful of times I've had to slow down under 100km. I just hold on tight and blast through it.
I thought you were going to give a feedback on the suspension . Your fuel economy n your drop in torque is because of your tyre diameter . It has nothing to do with suspension
so true... all gear no idea
Hi Hamish just enquiring if you purchased the 899$ NZD 3 year service Suzuki plan would you have not pay the 500$ diff oil in the first service? Thanks
Links for the things you've added?
The OME Lift Kit just the standard one, I purchased via a local 4wd shop. All my other accessories are from Suzuki or AliExpress. You can check out my buying new video and I list all the official accessories in the description.
@@thehardshift thank you!
Hi i am from auckland too. That is 215/75/15 maxxis bravo right? Thanks!
Yes, that's correct
Hi, may i know what liftkit setup u get? Is it set up with bullbar&winch or non bullbar and winch. On official website the difference is listed on the front coil spring which is 3144 and 3145. Thanks for ur review video sir.
Hey, I just got the OME Lift as a kit. For the springs I got 'OME Coil Spring-Jimny No Bar'. I wasn't provided part numbers, sorry.
Great vid! I wonder if anyone here could give their opinion regarding the Tein 40mm as well, choosing between OME and Tein for mine.
That's a good idea for a video! I'll keep an ear out for if I find anyone who has them.
Did you get the caster correction bushes? thanks
Yes, and also got the OLD MAN EMU PANHARD EXTENSION BRACKET AND BUMP STOP SPACER KIT. Cheers
@@thehardshift thanks!
What a great video.
Thank you. Very informative. You saved my money. I decided not to buy the Jimny after watching this. Subscribed to your channel and hit the bell icon. Keep going!
Thanks for the sub and glad I could help :-)
great car but useless off roader😠
Prove it
What is the side body moulding suppose to do? To protect the door from scratching?
I originally got it thinking it would protect the car from others opening their door onto it. The reality is the silver side under garnish that I added sticks out more though. So now it's just for looks I guess!
Hi Hamish, I believe these have a 40 litre fuel tank, so how often did you need to stop to fill up on the 14 hour road trip?
Maybe 3 times.. it was a while ago now. The small tank is a bit of a pain.
A great non-nerds review,. Very helpful👏👏
Thanks for that honest review...
Nice, thanks for sharing, I just did this track the other day for the first time. I had similar experience weather wise to you. Although the track does suit my MX5 really well with it being mostly corners its cool to see how the 86 compares. It looks like you left a lot of time out there in the braking zones especially that one on the little straight, I have a similar issue trying to get brave enough to accelerate until the last moment, it doesn't help the track having no braking markers. That track eats tires when its dry so you were kinda lucky with the weather. Car sounds cool BTW
This was my very first time on track ever but yeah confidence in late braking is a real thing. I have done quite a bit more track driving since this time and am getting better. I also changed to performance brake pads and fluid. Made a huge difference but more dust and squeaky. I'm heading down to do Manfeild in July which I'm looking forward to.
5:50 such a nice view to the back of the car
I think that sort of grill has an Toyota look
I just changed the suspension to Koni shocks, it goes like a racing car around corners
Hi, have you installed KONI Heavy Track shocks [0-20mm lift]? I'm on the fence about which shocks to buy for my Jimny. I'm mostly worried about the harsh ride as all lift kits come with harder springs.
I can't comment on the Koni shocks but the OME shocks are not hard riding. They have better quality progressive dampening than stock, so the ride quality is less harsh.
@@bikebert yes got the koni shocks from Melbourne and springs 20mm lift from oz jimy. A friend installed them, drove from Melbourne to Cairns, gone through some rough dirt tracks with wash outs, low level river crossings, all good so far. handles really well around corners on the range
Hello . I am planning to purchase Jimmny 5 door /2023 . I plan to use more on highway /not offrad . I like this Car due to It's design . - Do you think its safe to drive 140 km/h on highway with Jimmny ? - Thank you for reply in advance
Hey, this car is not suitable for 140km speed. The engine will struggle to even hold that speed (particularly being heaver with 5 doors) and the suspension is not set up to be stable at higher speeds.
Does it have power and stability at h8gh speed. The older generation was bad on the HYW.
It's not the best on the highway compared to other cars. The aftermarket suspension has helped with stability.
Surly, a lift only lifts the body, the axel is no higher, and I would have thought bigger tyers would be the way to increase clearance.
You cannot put larger tires without lifting it right..
You can fit 215/75R15 without a lift and not have any issues. Many have tested and say it's fine.
Hi, interested to know where you sourced your lift kit from? Cheers, K
I got mine from a shop in Auckland, New Zealand called Motortech. Including install it was about $3k nzd last year. Tires were extra.
The lift shouldn't have a big impact on your fuel economy. I believe it's the bigger tyres and going from HT to AT.
Changing your tyre size is what has changed your fuel economy and acceleration not the lift kit. The bigger tyres will also change your speedo it will show a slower speed than you're actually going
Yes you are 100% right. When talking I'm referring to 'the lift' as the full exercise I undertook in one go with modifications (including larger tires) but the way I've edited it doesn't make that awfully clear. A good learning for me for future videos :-)
No. He mentioned that the diameter of the new tyres is unchanged.
@@bikramsingh7768 changing width and aspect ratio will also change the diameter of the tyre
