Tree relocation. Giant Tree Spade at Work. Move trees up to 45 feet tall!
At American Treescapes, we use the largest tree spade in the tristate area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to move large trees up to 45 feet tall and 16 inches in diameter. Don't cut that tree down! Just move it! Watch us at work here. Check out our website to learn more: www.americantreescapes.com.

    How does the tree survive once the tap root is cut? And how does it become stable again without one?

    What is your percentage of survival and having a thriving tree after a move of something that large? What are the realistic expectations for the tree at 2 years after move? Thanks for the video.

    • @americantreescapes7660
      @americantreescapes7660 9 лет назад

      +Dadnatron The success rate is probably upper 90's (percentage). Many factors go in to the process such as time of year, type and size of tree, and the aftercare it will receive. If you stay conservative you have a great success rate. Thanks for your interest!

      +American Treescapes In terms of aftercare, what else apart from watering is required? Why do you think so many authorities (UK) simply cut down trees rather than move them, is it just ignorance or economics? Thanks.

    Maples are an ugly tree I've cut down a lot of them, good for firewood that's about it that's if you can find one that isn't rotting from the inside out.

    First & foremost, I applaud the principle and practice of relocating valuable trees. That said, would it not make more sense to wrap the branches and foliage BEFORE lifting the tree out and on to the truck? An adapted/redesigned baling (plastic wrap) machine would do the job.

    Although a great way to save a tree, I wonder how long it would take for lateral roots to grow past the bowl shape that has been made by the machine so as the tree can support itself should a wind blow it over, especially if its 45 feet high.

    Interesting video...thought the editing and narrative was really lacking, not to mention the resolution sucks. So here is what I think. I was an oiler on a 78" diameter, four spade, tree spade and worked in a tree nursery for several years, so I know a few things about transplanting trees. First of all, if you are going to spade' transplant a tree that is big, it is a smart practice to go in with the tree spade at least two years prior to actually moving it and root prune it. Root pruning with a tree spade is where you go in and position the spade exactly as you would if you were going to move it, but after the spades are all the way down and have cut through the roots, raise up the spades and unlock the cradle and pull away from it, leaving it in place exactly where it was growing. Root pruning a few years before moving a tree is critical for Maple trees that are 8" or more in caliper. Trust me on this one, any tree nursery that is legit will root prune their trees that are beyond sapling size which they wish to grow to an established size or larger, such as the one here, mature sized. This can be done with best results in early Autumn, before the leaves turn color and before they have begun to send their energy back down to the roots, well before they have fallen. Root pruning after the leaves have come down is counter-beneficial, because the energy sent down below ground into the tree's root system will be mostly beyond the cut roots that remain attached, those that make up the conical "root ball" that result from the pruning, thus depriving the tree of its stores of food and energy that are stored in the roots away from the cuts for the next growing season. This is very risky business to spade a tree this large, even with this large of a diameter spade. Once moved, the tree must be tethered to supporting posts of substantial size to keep it from toppling over in storms, high winds, etcetera. The tethers should be high strength stranded steel cables with turnbuckles that allow for adjustments and tensions to be kept at optimal forces on the trunk, and the cables need to be filtered with something so that that do not cut the trunk. This not only helps the tree remain vertical, but it also is important for root growth, as the roots will thrive when the root ball is stationary and not being torsioned by the movements of the above ground, tree. Unstaked trees will grow roots, but those new roots are tender and the greater movement beneath the soil from no staking support will impede new root growth from flourishing. Stakes probably need to remain installed for many years, so it is critical to inspect the harnesses and make sure they are not girdling the trunk Additionally, it is going to require a great amount of supplemental watering and fertilizing for years to come. All of the watering is going to make the ground softer and looser. The soil pressures of the ground that has been disturbed during the transplanting at the new tree's site will not increase as fast and the tree could easily get tipped by winds. The tie posts should be very stout and embedded very deep...thinking at least three steel stakes of two or three inch (Heavy schedule steel), ten to 12 feet long, radiating around the trunk, embedded to four to six feet at angles away from the trunk is not overkill. This tree is 44' tall and has a huge caliper. I doubt they root pruned this tree and if it lived, it will probably not grow noticeably for decades. It may put out new leaves in the Spring, but the expansion of the crown and overall height and caliper will not change hardly at all for at least ten years, probably more like 20+, due to the fact that the tree will be sending an overwhelming majority of foods', nutrients and water to the root system to replenish it in an attempt to get them to grow back to the proportions of the above ground mass that was present before moving.

      Playback007able Do you prune some limbs from the tree to balance the loss of roots?

    • @Playback007able
      @Playback007able 9 лет назад

      +jim smith actually a tree as large as the one in this video will have roots that are several inches in diameter and they may need to be cut with a chain saw they should happen by chance to get caught between two adjacent spades. I have had roots that were so large that the spades would'nt cut them and they would be holding the spades from completely closing together. Those roots are not growing back in a year.

    • @Playback007able
      @Playback007able 9 лет назад

      +Paul Ohlstein Yes. Pruning some of the canopy in order to lessen the requirements for sustaining it. Never top the tree or head back the crown. Always prune using methods that are conventionally accepted by arborists, such as a raising of the lower tiers of branches with lifting cuts that are concentric to the branche's collar.

    About time there is someone who says "Save my tree" or "My tree is coming with me", instead of cut, cut - chop, chop, dig dig. It's nice to know there are people who like trees. Well done guys. Nice video. By the way, seeing that tree roots are widespread, I believe this machine cuts some roots. Does the tree survive from cut roots and transportation?
