The ammunition used for this weapon is 9 mm Parabellum, a pistol ammunition still commonly used today. Magazine capacity is 32 rounds but in the field it was found that a full magazine more often led to a stoppage of fire so most often the magazines were loaded with 30 or fewer rounds (this in common with the other submachine guns that had the same type of magazine at the time). The first version of the weapon, the MP 38, in production from 1938 was intended to be a weapon for the German paratroopers but over time the weapon was distributed among other troop types. However, the MP 38 was expensive to produce, and was therefore replaced in 1940 by the MP 40 which was made entirely from punched sheet steel parts and with a plastic grip. Experience from the campaign in Poland, where the lack of a fuse on the MP 38 proved to lead to many dangerous shootings, led to the MP 40 also being fitted with a fuse. During the war, over 1,000,000 k-pists of the model MP 40 were manufactured. The magazine in the MP 40 had room for 32 cartridges, a later version of the weapon developed a variant, the MP 40II which had two interconnected magazines with room for 64 cartridges. The MP 43 was developed as a further development of the MP 40, but this weapon was soon developed into an automatic carbine.
