The effect of social media on our school-age children and teens
Leaders from Friends School Mullica Hill explained some of the research done regarding the negative effects on our children caused by the rise of cell phone and social media usage among adolescents, as well as some strategies that schools and parents can employ to address these issues.
They then shared their reflections and provided F/friends with an opportunity to ask questions and have a general discussion.

    Palestinians are no longer talking about two nations. One problem is the report that Gaza which had 2.1 million has been destroyed; another is the nearly one million who have "settled" with help from military in the West Bank. Palestinians want one nation with full rights and citizenship in the lands that Britain seized in 1917.

    Interesting. As I learn more about the original Quakers, I am finding validation for my own experiences and beliefs. The original Quaker belief was that God is Love and that we can directly connect to God through our own Hearts. And I realize the truth in this, because I've had profound experiences with it, since going through a grieving/healing process in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Since then I have felt that when we release the suppressed pain that blocks our Hearts, we automatically connect more deeply with Love/Light/God and bring more Love and compassion into our world. Many people have put me down and thought I was crazy. So, I am glad to be able to back up my realization with a stand for people who had also found the same reality many centuries ago - the original Quakers. I feel much less alone now, even though I do not know if any of the original Quakers still exist or any had realized how people can deepen their direct connection to God, through focusing on healing their own Hearts - through focusing on releasing the suppressed emotional pain that blocks their Hearts and through avoiding feeling numbing pharmaceuticals and other substances that block people's Hearts from Love/God. I have also found that visualizing things like pure white Light pouring down from the heavens and filling our Heart can help deepen our connection to Love/Light/God. Try it and see for yourself.

    Her description of Fox “living closely to God” is not quite an accurate picture of how and why he was able to do the things he did on the level he did. Fox was unmistakably in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, he recorded the event in his journal and mentioned “being brought up thru the flaming sword which guards the Tree of Life and came up passed the state of Adam’s perfection into a higher state in Christ Jesus,” so Christ was resurrected in him after his baptism of fire, into the death of self and rebirth of water & spirit into the 2nd birth, the 2nd Adam.

    • @kingdomdreams4
      @kingdomdreams4 9 месяцев назад

      * some ppl may presume what “living closely to God” means which could mean anything according to their view of what it means, instead it was actually Fox living and dwelling in the Kingdom and Paradise of God, in His presence just as Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden. God walked in Fox, and Fox dwelled in Him in His Paradise.

    I have often wondered if part of the reason why rural Quakers in the late 1700s.early 1800s tended to be more universalist than wealthy urban Quakers is because in rural areas they were more likely to interact with and be influenced by Indigenous folks. Many old Quaker journals, including John Woolman's., for example, include sections on traveling to indigenous villages and worshiping with anybody who wished to join them. I have yet to find a journal that acknowledges how their own spiritual views or practices may have been impacted by this experience, but they do write respectfully about the spirituality they shared with the tribal members who they worshiped with (as well as observing with surprise the equal role women had in governmental decisions.). We can sort of see a similar effect still happening today with West Coast Friends drifting increasingly universalist in comparison with East coast Meetings as they become influenced by Jewish, Buddhist, Native American, or even New Age spiritualities.

    Just starting to watch the talk. The Quakers came to my attention a long time ago, when I was in Africa for a year teaching is the first time I recall, when I was nursing my affinity for Unitarian Universalism with my own focus lightly on Taoism with a light Kung Fu form practice and interest in the Tao Te Ching and my early interfaith spiritual seeking. I actually drove to Philadelphia at some point a few years after that and bought an amazing book at the Quaker bookstore by H Brinton, 300 Years of Quakers. Still, my path was a broad interfaith one that came to be focused on the 12 step groups for relationships, and healing in therapeutic psychology and in diverse study of holistic workshops. Buddhism also became a major interest, as it still is. And then I walked into a Christian Science Reading Room. Christian Science has been a major part of my path for years as that practice and their recorded body of testimonies with a loving approach simply have continued to infuse all my influences. I´m happy to have found this talk, from 2012, I see, and learn that the 1948 reconstruction had reconstructed some important body of Fox´s healing work. I´m working on a healing theatrical monologue project, and see key angles to appreciating the historical issues this brings up. Were miracles appreciated in Fox´s day? Not in David Hume´s circles. Craig Keener came out with a crucial book in 2011 called Miracles that addresses things with a pioneering level of academic insight. I´m a freethinker, and now identify as an interfaith UU Quaker Christian, aka Gandhian Christian. Thank you George Fox and Quaker Friends for all you do. I hope to be able to have more fellowship with you guys as my life´s mission unfolds! I´m grateful to the Divine through Jesus and Buddha for learning about such wonderful communities of worship and integrity. For healing, not least of all.

      They should have searched within. No one wins a war, they all lose, therefore it would have been better to speak to god for all of the lost souls, and perhaps if they were driven to do something, then helping the wounded to recover would have been a good option.

    There. are big differences between zen and Quakerism. Zen has a hierarchical structure. There are head monks, junior monks and so on. Plus in Zen unlike Quakerism there are masters and their students. For me this is problematic Because of the potential for abuse. There has been many reports of zen masters abusing their students. I have practiced Zen for over twenty years and now have shifted my faith to the Quaker path. Not having clergy is a big draw for me. It seems that this lack of hierarchy limits the potential for abuse

    “Family” is needed as a 10th.Testimony Most Quaker testimonies can be paired with each other. Truth with Integrity, Equality with Justice, Non-violence with Mediation and Earth Stewardship with Simplicity. Each one of each pair cannot exist without the other. Truth cannot exist without Integrity nor Integrity without Truth, and so on. But the testimony of “Community” stands alone. It is self-evident that its pair is “Family” and that neither can exist without the other also. The Quaker founding fathers would never have thought that Families could be so compromised as to need a supporting testimony, but they have been. Searching “Quaker Faith and Practise” for the word “Family” I find that it is used only thirteen times. In the stillness of the night and in your quietest moments I ask that you place “Families” in the Light. It is where love is first found. Without love the testimonies are lost, not written in stone, but whispered on the wind. I invite you to share the “concern” that “Family” is of sufficient importance to be made a Testimony and that it is essential for “Community” to properly function. Accepting “Family” as the 10th.Testimony The Quaker testimonies of Equality and Justice have failed in the family. Fathers and children are at a disadvantage with many having been lost to each other. 45% of UK school age children do not now live under the same roof as their father. Quakers and their testimonies constitute a feminist/woke institution that does not accept this as being a problem, never addressing it. It is more likely to do so if “Family” is accepted as a Testimony on the understanding that children’s natural maturation process has 3 essential stages of need. A. The unconditional love of the mother from birth until about 7 years of age. The mother must have “thefinalsay” B. The conditional love of the father, who takes his children out into the world, gives security and teaching social boundaries from 7 until about 13 years of age. The father must have “thefinalsay”. C.The friendship and respect of their peers from 13 until 18 years of age. The child must have “thefinalsay”. If these 3 stages are not sequence in order, maturation is unlikely to be achieved and mental resilience reduced. This has now become generational. Such a regime of equal and just parenting rights (over time) would bind parents into a co-operative relationship, because (over time) each will hold the power of “thefinalsay” sequentially when it is needed and best favoured to use it. Such family protocols need to be the default position, (allowing love, courtesy and humour to prevail) but could in exceptional cases be varied by the courts. Buckminster Fuller said:- “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete”. To alleviate suffering is worthy. To prevent it is divine, but thankless.
