5 Best Car Tires for Rain and Snow
Im trying to figure out if general 365 or 45. I drive a subaru forester 2.0xt in Massachusetts.
What do the speed ratings on tires mean?
The only time you will find non Michelin tires on a car I own is if they come from the factory that way. Then they are replaced with Michelin at first wear change.
I have been using both brands. I love the defenders. But remember after 5 years they will be weather cracked. So if want a tire that lasts longer than 5 years. By Bridgestone.
That's interesting to hear. The rubber should hold up longer than that on Michelins but environmental conditions can have an effect.
Is the Scorpion WeatherActive different then the CINTURATO WeatherActive ? (Because i recently just got the CINTURATO for my Hyundai Kona) it seems pretty decent
The Scorpion portion of the name designates it's meant for SUVs while Cinturato is for sedans. Both are great.
The Michelen Cross Climate II and the new, Goodyear Weather Ready II, all weather tires could be added to this list as a couple more premium picks.
You're absolutely right. This video isn't too terribly old but it could use updating. I stuck to the truly truck and SUV tires and not the grand touring tires, which is why the CrossClimate2 is absent. The WeatherReady 2 and the Vredestein Quatrac Pro+ are new to the market and both are proving to be excellent picks. I'll add this to the list of videos I need to create.
You forgot Nokian.
Fair point. Nokian tends to be a little more niche for colder climates but they make excellent tires.
@@tiregrades1025 You are spot on I am from Montreal, Canada. Keep up the good work, cheers.
@@padraigadhastair4783 Thanks for the feedback!
❤ the comparisons board
Thanks for the feedback. Seriously. It's helpful to know what people find useful. Take care.
I had the Continental HT and at. The ht was way better in the snow than the at and lasted longer than the Michelin the cam on the truck
The more on-road focused a tire is the better it usually is with snow.
perfect timiong for vid, i just got some used 95% tread left yokahama geolandars from work and im thinking of throwing them on my mustang gt
They're not much of a performance tire and designed for larger vehicles. They may ride a little firm on a Mustang but they may work out okay for daily driving if you found a compatible size. Be sure and check the load rating and speed rating. Good luck.
I chose these over the cc2's and I love them. Got the Scorpion Weatheractives, same tire but for SUVs.
CrossClimate2 are great tires but the WeatherActive seems to have finally beaten them.
This was a great review. I think itd have more views with a better thumbnail.
You're probably right. I don't have a clue what I'm doing in regards to RUclips!
Road noice, and vibration a definite problem. Tingling on gas pedal constant.
Some do report this problem. I still always recommend checking your alignment if you haven't already done so when you have vibrations. While it can be the tires, it's often alignment related. Good luck and be sure to check out the recommended alternatives.
Noisiest tire I’ve ever had in my life!
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. That's very unusual. Could have been a bad batch or alignment problems. Checking your alignment is a good call if you haven't had one in quite a while or you've recently hit a curb or something that could have tweaked the suspension.
The ride is very rough for my Edge ST.
@@drek782 Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. You may want to consider a Grand Touring or even a Standard Touring tire. Grand Touring tires should offer a smoother ride quality.
@ honestly it’s more or less the treadware rating… higher the rating harder the tire compound. The pirelli active weather has a 700 rating, the tires they replaced the OEM hankook had a 500 rating. I’m looking for something in between that, better in upstate NY winter weather than the OEM but with not as good treadware as the activeweather.
@@drek782 Yep. It's a balancing act between different features.
How do you get the performance scores?
All performance scores are compiled from customer feedback. Only tires that have a substantial amount of feedback are included in the review process. Here's the relative explainer from the About page (tiregrades.com/about/) on TireGrades.com: 100% CUSTOMER FEEDBACK RATINGS I want to be transparent that all of the tires are rated by 100% customer feedback. The great thing about reviews based on customer experiences is that they cast a very wide net. When averaged out over a large number of responses, you begin to get a very good assessment of a tire’s strengths and weaknesses. As a Tire Rack affiliate, I scour their massive database of tire review statistics and pluck out the gems that offer the most bang for your buck. It’s easy enough to find the best-performing tire, but you’ll likely pay through the nose for it. Often, you can get surprisingly close to the pinnacle of performance while saving a significant amount.
Cooper tires. Best
Definitely a good value tire that doesn't always get the attention it deserves.
I liked their AT3 tires when I had a jeep, but Cooper unfortunately doesn't offer a high quality all season choice for my Blazer. Had to go with another brand.
@@kurtp5379 I'd be curious to know what you decided to go with and how you felt they've performed.
@@tiregrades1025, I live in south central Kansas. We normally have mild winter's. But I still wanted a tire that was capable in light snow. I watched many tire review videos and field evaluations performed by, Tire Rack. I decided the best all year, all season tire for me was the, Continental Cross Contact LX 25 tires. I have only had them a couple of months, but have noticed a smoother, more comfortable ride.
, sorry for the delay. I live in southcentral Kansas, so not much annual snowfall. I settled on the best all around, all season tire for me was the, Continental Cross Contact LX 25. So far I have noticed a more comfortable ride. This tire also offers a rim protection feature, which is an added bonus. Field evaluations and customer reviews I found here and at Tire Rack mentioned this tire also performs decently in light snow, which helped me to make my final decision.
I run these on my 2008 accord v6 exl in Colorado.
Has your experience with them been god enough that you'd buy them again?
Review says nothing about noise and for many thats a big part of a buying review.
Fair point. Here's the noise ratings for the tires included in this video: Michelin Defender2 = Road Noise: 9.0 of 10 Goodyear Assurance MaxLife = Road Noise: 8.2 of 10 Continental TrueContact Tour = 8.7 of 10 Yokohama AVID Ascend LX = Road Noise: 8.7 of 10 Hankook Kinergy ST = Road Noise: 8.7 of 10 More granular stats are usually in the linked reviews in the video description if you come across another video where I don't call out a stat that's important to you and you don't want to wait on me to reply. That said, I do try to respond to comments in a timely fashion. Good luck and happy motoring.
If you just needed to do this to the back ones could you do it with just a jack? I never tried but thought if i got a jack maybe I could. but seems kinda complicated and if you take both off one side then there's nothing for the other to balance on right? IDK just woke up this morning thinking maybe I could try if i could find a jack.
Jack stands would be safer. I wouldn't recommend trying it with just one jack. Good luck!
What about the run flat performance? A key for rating run flat tires.
Honestly, as long as these tires all last for 50 miles at speeds up to 50 mph (which they do) they are living up to their promise. Hopefully you're not pushing them beyond that. ;)
Thank you for the review as most of my tire knowledge is way outdated.
Thank YOU for watch. Glad you found it helpful.
Is it the same as Goodyear Reliant sold at Walmart?
Sorry, no. It's designed specifically for Walmart to make the tire cheaper to produce so they can sell it for a much lower price. There are similarities but it's a very different tire.
@tiregrades1025 Okay. Walmart says on sale, but out of stock? Are they fooling people? I may go to Costco for Bridgestone, which I have been using for 35-40 yrs now. Never have a flat tire or any issue at all.
@@manusharma5059 Bridgestone is excellent. I prefer them to Goodyear personally but that doesn't mean Goodyear is bad. Good luck!
These are not Budget tires these are mid range and premium tires a budget tire is a Chinese or Asian tire . Michelin is a premium brand where I come from.
I suppose it's fair to say that budget is a relative term. In this case, these are tires that are designed to last and maximize bang-for-the-buck. They're not super-cheap off-brand budget tires though. I'll try to clarify what i mean in the future. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi. Are these ratings based on actual performance testing data or based on user feedback? Thanks.
Ratings are based on real customer feedback.
1-handling 2-comfort 3-noise 205-55-16r which summer tires do you recommend for bmw f20 ?
I'd go with the General G-MAX RS if you're interested in one of the tires in this video. It's the best bang for the buck. If money is no object then I'd go for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S because they're the best performance tire that you can daily drive. These are summer tires so depending on where you live you may want an ultra high performance all-season tire. If that's the case I'd go with the Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS+. It's a good performance/value tire. It's a shame the Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3 doesn't come in that size, otherwise I'd go with that. I hope this helps.
Scratch the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. I forgot to check if it came in your size. It doesn't. The Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 does and it's the runner up to the Michelin in my opinion.
@@tiregrades1025 I live in Turkey Actually I was just looking for summer tires But I can think about it in all 4 seasons, if my wishes can be presented in a single product. Tires I'm thinking of for summer continental PremiumContact 7 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 continental SportContact 7 Michelin Primacy 4+ continental UltraContact I want good handling, comfort and silence. But I also like to put my vehicle in sport mode and speed up. In this case, should I choose a tire from the sport class? What does sport tire mean? What is its necessity? What are the pros and cons?
@@ekremekrem6649 I'm not as familiar with these tires but generally speaking, comfortable and quiet tires fall into the "Grand Touring" tire category and they should grip more than adequately for the occasionally spirited drive through the turns. They will also last a lot longer than a performance-oriented sport tire which has softer rubber. They also put performance first and tend to ride harsher and can sometimes be louder due to the more aggressive tread patterns. Michelin tires often good for doing everything well but they usually cost the most. The Michelin Primacy 4+ might be the best choice of the bunch for you. It's a "Grand Touring" Summer tire and should be comfortable and quiet while still handling very well though not quite to the level of a high performance sport tire.
As a total tire newbie this was super helpful!
Thanks for sharing this. Glad to know my efforts are appreciated. Take care.
Thanks 4 this video!
You're welcome my friend.
The weatherready 2 just came out and should be better than the first one. Have had the weatheready 1for 3 years now and have been happy with them even in soutb dakota winters.
That's an impressive testimony for the original WeatherReady being able to handle South Dakota winters! No doubt the WeatherReady 2 will be even better.
How do these compare to the Pirelli P7 AS + 3? I love that tire but looking to get new tires soon and these Pirelli WeatherActives look attractive. At the end of the day im mostly interested in ride quality and comfort.
The Cinturato WeatherActive is the better tire, but the P7 AS Plus 3 is not far behind and usually found for a lot less money.
CrossClimate2 is my choice and still using them 365 days per year. Had them since December 2022 as gone through 2 U.S. Northeast winters as where I live gets an annual average of 126 inches of snowfall. Still have plenty of tread and expect to last another 4 whole years. I don't have to swap between Summer/ All-Season to Winter/Snow tires as CC2's are All-Weather and all year round tires. However, you do lose 2 to 4 MPG on fuel efficiency sometimes worse MPG depending on terrain, how you drive - aka driver bad habits, and maintaining proper PSI - inflation. Expect to get more life as the CC2 should get you between 60,000 to 80,000 miles before replacing. A couple of RUclipsr Video folks have claimed 100k miles on CrossClimate2s. They are relatively quiet, except in snow, handle weather conditions well, and good on the road. Comfort depends on wheel size ... I have 235/40R19 [2023 Toyota Camry XSE V6] and on good surfaced roads they are comfortable, get on choppy and terrible roads I tend to feel all the roads imperfections. Overall, CC2 is a great tire. The OE tires were BridgeStone Turanza EL440's which are 1,000 percent dangerous and unsafe tires as I had them shredded. The Best Top 3 Brand Name tire companies are Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, and worth an honorable mention is Good Year. Stay far away from any Asian/Korean/Japan made tires and that include Mexico.
After one year, I am pleased with these tires, great ride and great control. These are not cheap but what is safety worth.
Good to hear. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Buy cheap noisy tyres, earplugs are cheap.
Solid advice.
I was comparing this versus pilot 4 all season, cross climate 2 and p zero as plus 3. I’m leaning towards this.
They're both great but the Cinturato WeatherActive is a slightly better pick. Good luck!
Great summary. Thanks.
Glad you liked it.
Poor review. Guy is just reading from a sheet….😖
IKR? Low effort! ;)
im trying to get some tires that ride comfy, quite, and will also be fine in all seasons, what would you recommend 245/45/18?
Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive would be an excellent tire to check out if budget is not an issue. The General AltiMAX RT45 is a good mid-tier all-season tire with good stats across the board and is significantly less expensive.
@@tiregrades1025 okay also what about 245/45/19 would you recommend the same tires? also do you think with similar tires to the 18” rim will the 19 ride better ?
@@xbotbananaboi7064 The ride quality should be the same for both sizes because the sidewall height for the tire is the same 45% of 245mm = 110.25mm or 4.34 inches. If you're also buying wheels at the same time you want to make sure they will fit since the rolling diameter of the 19" wheels is going to be significantly more than the 18" wheels with the same tire width and sidewall height. Check out the calculator on the following page: tiregrades.com/tire-anatomy/tire-size/what-is-wheel-diameter/
@@tiregrades1025 theyll fit lol, but thank you for the link it is useful just to be sure, but just to reiterate, for comfort and noise, you would d take the pireli cinturanto wether active over the p7 as plus 3 ?
@@xbotbananaboi7064 I haven't personally tried the Cinturatos myself but current feedback from customers is excellent. In general though, the v-groove directional tires can sometimes be a little noisier so that could be a factor. Otherwise, the P7 AS Plus 3s aren't as new and have an outstanding track record with some of the highest marks for comfort. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but that said, as a newer tire gets more miles from customers and more feedback comes in, the general sentiment can change so the AS Plus 3 is the safer pick.
This list must be specifically for passenger car's...
It is. I should have made that more clear in the title. I'll also try to add one for all-season truck and SUV tires to the queue.
lol this review the guy picked random tires and put random scores without any evidence. Most of these tires are horrible in the rain. The best AT tires in the rain are Cooper Discoverer AT 4S. You can tell by the tread pattern and all the sipes they have.
Actually, the tires are ranked specifically by customer feedback. Unfortunately, all-terrain tires are all fairly terrible in the rain. Glad you've had good experience with the Coopers.
Good info, just purchased a new truck with nitrogen in the tires and wondered about the pros and cons and this video answered many questions.
Glad you found it helpful!
Air has 77% Nitrogen an 23 % Oxygen by mass. How Nitrogen molecular size is larger than Air? The Atomic numer of NItrogen is 7 and that of oxygen is 8.
tHANKS!
No, thank YOU! ;)
Michelin Cross Climate 2..Best I had previously ran : Goodyear assur aw Continental cross con Nokian wrg4
A new tire on the market worth checking out that's shaping up to be the new king is the Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive: ruclips.net/video/oQh_9eL5jWY/видео.html
I have MT tires now. But this tires terrifiyng me in the rain the otherwise K02 etc is terrifyng too. I need tires that I can use in the rain .I cannot find yet that What I must use..
Unfortunately, for rain the best option is to go with an on-road oriented all-terrain tire like the Falken WildPeak A/T Trail or Nitto Nomad Grappler. Off-road tires, MT, RT, or Off-Road All-Terrains like the K02 can't be driven on aggressively or at higher speeds in the rain without a little "pucker factor" to say the least.
My BF Goodrich All Terrain T/As are terrifying in the rain. I've had 8 sets of them since 1979 and this is the second bad set I've had. From my research the quality varies greatly. One set will be great and the next will be terrible. I won't buy another set. At $1200/set it isn't worth the gamble.
Sorry to hear you've had issues with KO2s. That's a lot of money to drop on a set of tires. They definitely need to be dependable on and off road. If you decide to try them again make sure you adhere to the warranty requirements if you encounter quality issues again. Off-Road Optimized All Terrain tires generally are very poor in the rain but owners tend to have had the best experiences with the ones in this video. I recommend swapping to On-Road Optimized for better rain traction on the streets but that usually runs counter to the goals of owning a set of Off-Road Optimized tires. Tires are often about tradeoffs unfortunately. Good luck my friend.
Ko2 in the rain are downright terrifying.
To be fair, all-terrain tires on the whole are terrifying in rain. But these are the ones that have been rated the best by owners.
@@tiregrades1025 in your experience, what would be a good wet truck tire? Its been very hard to narrow down.
@@BeardedRaven Essentially, Off-Road all terrain tires will all perform poorly, but On-Road all terrain tires like the Falken WildPeak A/T Trail jump up in wet on-road performance but obviously drop off in their off-road abilities. Stepping even further away from all-terrain capabilities to something to a Touring All Season tire like the Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive will dramatically improve wet traction. If an off-road all terrain tire is what you need, unfortunately the tires in this video are as good as it gets. It's the nature of the chunky block design and an inevitable tradeoff.
@@tiregrades1025 thanks for taking the time to help.
Why rotate tires six months if less 5000 miles drive?
Primarily to get eyes on your tires and help ensure you maintain your tire manufacturer's warranty. This varies between manufacturers so you'll want to check the requirements. In general, it's just a good practice but not required.
Thank you. Straight to the point without having to hear all about the channel and what you like to eat for lunch
If you're interested, you'll want to hit Pinky's here in Charlotte and get a Pinky Dog. ;)
Aspect ratio has nothing to do with the wheel diameter, but with the tire width.
Correct. It does affect the wheel assembly diameter (wheel + tire) though.
I have the CC2's. Perfect for my Westcoast rainy days. Good in snow, too. Noisy on some pavement types. I'd buy again.
Damn good tires though since doing this review the Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive has become an amazing tire to consider.
Thanks 👍✊🌍🍿
No, thank YOU! ;)
