Entertainment Tonight 1990 In Review (Gay) Sex on TV--SHORT CLIP
This is an edited, short clip from Entertainment Tonight's 1990 Year in Review show which highlights sex on TV and a controversial gay scene from the show Thirtysomething. This was only 5 or so years after Steven Carrington on Dynasty (also on ABC) was given a boyfriend where all they could be shown doing was hugging each other. The Thirtysomething scene was just a gay couple in bed together. My, how times have changed! The networks (especially ABC) can show a LOT more on TV these days but are things better? Is Hollywood showing gay couples in loving, romantic scenes like their straight counterparts or is it there for shock value only to claim that their pushing the envelope to make TV mo...

From early 1991, Donahue takes on the topic of gay marriage during a time when such a thing didn't seem remotely possible. In fact, it almost seemed laughable but the panel on this episode was downright serious about it. Such an early debate paved the way for what is going on in the world right now. I say if they want to be married, then should just the same as anyone else. They're going to be together anyway, let them have their right to live as they do. However, I'm a Christian, and if I were clergy I could not officiate any marriage other than a woman and a man. It is a legal union, but cannot be a religious covenant before God, because it is an abomination before Him. I'm not judging, God had already judged it.

In 1983 I came home from kindergarten one day and my mom was watching Donahue. There was an episode with about gay men. That was the first time I could put a name to what I knew I already was. After watching the audience’s reaction to them, I knew I could never tell anybody. I’m 47 years old now I am happily married to my husband. Phil was definitely ahead of his time.

1983 everyone was still very judgemental about this. There was still just as many gay people in the world then as there is now but most people didn't come out because most people wouldn't except them. A lots changed in 41 years for the better and congrats to you on your anniversary.

Truly historic archival material from the turn moments in queer history. I would have been just beginning my post-college advocacy when this first aired. I had to see what happened to this couple and was saddened to learn that they split up about 18 months after they got their final court rejection (it was a circuit ruling denial of their marriage application as constitutional). Even sadder is that Patrick Gill died, apparently from HIV complications. However, Craig Dean is alive and lives with his fiancée John Blevins, in South Carolina. But Craig still speaks fondly of his partner in history, his departed almost husband, Patrick.

Of course. By getting attention it becomes part of the public discourse. Lot’s of couple sought attention on this matter and now there are many thousands of same sex couples are happily married. It was the only way it could happen. It took a lot of people getting public attention to decriminalise homosexuality before that.
