    A trick you might try on your stitches is to lay out your holes lightly with your stitching tool, then drill your holes and then hammer your stitching tool through just like you were punching your holes. This kind of shapes the leather before stitching just like you only used the punch. I’ve used this method quite a bit when sewing extra thick leather holsters and such that have really thick welts that my machine won’t sew. Just a thought Another trick to try on your leather tooling is when you are stamping the border around your basket weave, try tilting your stamping tool back towards you a little bit. This will cause a little bit of a raised affect to your basket weave area. If you don’t like the affects you get I understand these are just some ideas that I use but thought you might wanna try

      Ohh I hadn't thought of that! I used to drill the stitching holes in leather but it always ended up with wee fuzzy bits and it never looked right but never thought of drilling thinner holes and punching part way either side! I made an axe recently and had to punch though about a half inch welt or something, wish i'd known!

    Hi mate, I love the workmanship, but have to ask, have you tried wearing it? I'm a Scot, daily kilt wearer an user of many sgian-dubhs, and this one has a remarkably thick pair of scales, is it just intended for display? I just can't imagine it being comfortable in my socks.

      Hello! This video was made 3 years ago and I make them a wee bit differently now since then, I still have this knife in a drawer somewhere and it as absolutely horrendous! It was really more of a decorative thing but It just never quite worked as a sgian dubh really. I have been recording some videos to post, a few making sgian dubhs with much smaller handle so hopefully you'll see them and think they're at least a wee bit better :)

    Nice little dagger but a Sgian Dubh is a single edged blade not dual, decent leather work though.

      Thanks haha! Was just a different style I was trying at the time, thought it would be cool with thr forge scale but I haven't made one like it since so I guess you're right!

      I think it's the edm stone you're talking about - Cromwell tools sells them in the UK, so does Zoro They're so much better than sandpaper!

    Great job with the tools at hand. How did you find working with the brass liners. I want to try it but have heard it’s a bit tricky to grind as it heats up quickly and the epoxy can fail.

    • @mcgillsworkshop4378
      @mcgillsworkshop4378 2 года назад

      Hey dude thanks for the kind words! It heats up unbelievably quickly and when you stack grinding through wood on top it's kind of a pain - It's a lot of doing a bit then waiting for it to cool then doing another bit so I'd definitely recommend bringing a book! One thing I didn't do here that I should've though, is drilling little dents in the steel brass and wood to increase the surface area for the epoxy and If you don't drill a LOT of holes in the brass it gets very heavy.

      @@mcgillsworkshop4378 Awesome thanks for the tips man. I’m going to try some brass scales. I have quite thick brass so hopefully it doesn’t heat up so fast. But for sure once it’s hot it will stay hot for longer. Definitly going to drill a lot of holes in the brass. Cheers
