As a real estate agent, I would say that they build cheap house because they get away with it. Most people buy home emotionally, not with any kind of tactics, research, or any kind of reasoning. Just pure emotion. People who do end up making money on their home do so only because of the market situation, not because they treated their home like an investment. Buy houses as if they are an investment and not on what your friends will think.
