GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ice Maker - Disassembly and Deep Cleaning (full video)
My GE Opal 2.0 nugget icemaker is nearly 2 years old and has definitely seen better days. We have spotted black algae or mold at the bottom of the main water unit and sometimes in the ice itself. I have not been as diligent about cleaning out the unit, and this was the outcome. In this video, I will disassemble the ice maker and thoroughly clean out the muck and dust. I hope it helps some of you out there!

    This is awesome. I had my machine since 2022 and when I opened that reservoir, the first time, I could not believe what I was looking at. That is the type of thing that causes serious illness and GE does not warn about this and does not give any solutions and I find that very disturbing now every three weeks I take it apart and do what you’re doing and have been for the last two years. I’m definitely going to get those extra long pipe cleaners cause bc I take it apart and attach the zip ties every time. I just had to get the Opal 2.0 because mine started to make a funny noise and I found out that it was the fan and I guess mine was so old. It couldn’t be replaced or whatever reason. I find that the 2.0 is a little better, but if you’re using it thinking that the Bluetooth Wi-Fi connection will help it does not. Thanks Again for your video

    Crazy how fiendishly addicted to ice Americans are - french door fridges with icemakers in the *above freezing high humidity* compartment because they don't want to open the freezer to get it that are so unreliable that *every single brand* of refrigerator has had a recall or class action over their icemaker since the ridiculous concept of "muh iceeeee" became expected in french doors, and then these offensive contraptions that guzzle electricity and continually fight entropy by making ice cubes and letting them melt and then making ice cubes again, over and over until the heat death of the universe... Maybe the solution is for americans to finally admit that "having access to ice" no longer is a sign of wealth... it's just a sign of being needlessly wasteful, like vented clothes dryers that blow 6,000 watts of heat out of a 4" hole in the wall.. also a painfully american obsession. 😂

    I have an older GE Opal ice maker. I also have mold in the exterior tubing coming. from the tank. I haven't opened the upper tank yet. I wondered if maybe the UV light wasn't working. Your video said it came on but was dim. Is this normal? I didn't see any other comments about how to test the UV light.

    Ours was screaming…my husband blew in one of the hoses and all kinds of the black gunk came out…stopped the screaming. But we need to open it up and probably do the deep clean since we’ve never done the vinegar thing weekly (or ever actually). We use RO water…but still get that gunk.

    A) Great video - THANK YOU for the instructions on how to take it apart. I was stuck at the lid/top. I just needed to pull harder. I would never have found out how to access the screws up front. B) I am disappointed in the build/operation quality of this unit. I love the nugget ice. The GE brand used to a sign of top quality. Gunk! Yuck! C) I use distilled or highly filtered water (0 dissolved particulates) and I still have gunk in the hoses after ~2 years. D) It's not a closed system, so stuff will get in there and propagate. E) Looks like I need to clean the thing more than once a year. LOL!

    The UV lights on these are underpowered for their task. Also the corrosion of the parts that connect to the stainless steel auger assembly is the death knell of these units. The screws and bolts are not stainless steel and rot out very quickly.

    if you r using tap water and it looks like you are, you need to stop. Get distilled water and you'll have to do much less maintenance and get a longer life out of your machine. I had the opal 1.0 and ran tap water cause I didnt know any better and was constantly fighting issues like you have here. My opal 1.0 eventually stopped working but I couldnt live without the wonderful nuggeet ice so I bought the 2.0 and learned through youtube videos that hard water was my problem and since running 99% distilled water through the machine I have had no issues. Switch to distilled water and you'll thanki me later.

    It is a good start. Mine is making the exact same sound. BUT mine is because the ice is coming out shaved and not solid. This is causing an ice build up and no ice can come out of the ports.

      Fair point. I concede that I was not good about regular maintenance and cleaning in the early days. And once you let it get out of control, it's hard to get back on track. By their very nature, any nugget ice machine will have the same risks, though, so don't feel that a competing product will solve all of these issues.

    It's disappointing to see that with the 2.0 they haven't redesigned this system for direct waterline hookup. The 1.0 and 2.0 both have a float, a pump and a reservoir so this comes down to the fact they do not want to implement it.. The could also benefit from redesigning that secondary internal reservoir. I'm shocked at this point they haven't replaced that whole thing with a carbon filter like they have in a refrigerator. Just goes to show i doesn't matter how big a company is their is always room for improvement. Thanks for this video. Seeing the internals on the 2.0 are extremely helpful when deciding on what to buy next.

    Omg. I’ve had my Opal for probably a year and a half and I love it, but I have seen flecks in the water when I clean it so I figured I needed to descale it more often (I bleach clean it more than descale). But what you found in there is scary.

    This is an excellent video. I have an Opal 1.0 (the prototype from FirstBuild), and the interior is very similar. On the FirstBuild, you can take a white plastic cover off of the refrigeration unit, and then use a baster to fill up the unit with vinegar or bleach water. Then you can disconnect the tube on the back of the refrigeration unit to drain and add some fresh water. I also was not sure if the UV light is working. I plugged in the unit like seen in the video, and saw a very small blue light. I tried to hold up a dollar bill to see if the light would illuminate the security thread, but I think the light is very low powered and it might only work in a dark environment.

    • @itsnorm
      @itsnorm 6 месяцев назад

      The UV light for killing biologicals is actually the UV-C spectrum, which may not illuminate a dollar bill's UV feature. I bought a UV tester card and mine did light up the UV-C sensitive patch. But yeah, these do appear to do very little. Some people have added a larger incandescent UV-C bulb built for an aquarium filter. That may have helped.

    Thanks for your help! We just took apart our machine after loud a squeaking/squealing noise began. The water reservoir was clean, but we found most of the tubes were clogged with hard water/mineral deposits. I couldn’t believe how bad they were. And we clean ours almost weekly with vinegar.

    I found an Opal 1.0 at the thrift store. It wouldn’t make ice so I followed your disassembly process and cleaned out all the hoses. When I woke up in the morning, I had a bin full of ice! It was good you identified the Bluetooth plugin. I think it could have had something to do with it not working for me. I disconnected it and it’s doing just fine. Thank you!

    I watched another video and after he finished cleaning his he said “oh, you also have to clean the filter” but he never showed a filter. I just watched your video and I didn’t hear you say anything about a filter. Is there a filter? If so where is it?

    • @itsnorm
      @itsnorm 6 месяцев назад

      A rectangular mesh sediment filter is standard issue on all Opal's. That may be what he was referring to, as mold can get in the mesh and inside the unit itself. Beyond that, the only other filter available is a white snap on carbon filter unit that gets replaced, not cleaned.

    Somehow water got inside the front double wall on the icebox part of mine and I can't seem to find any way to get it to drain out, do you know how to open that so the water can get back out? I'm not sure how it managed to get in while I can't get it to drain out but that's where I'm at. If I leave it in there I'm sure it's going to start molding and look nasty.
