A plus for the respect, but a minus for the strawmans. No, those aren't the reason people became atheists. Are you sure when you met one he didn't told you "because i've no reason to believe"? Why that point is missing in your list, and it's the number two in ANY atheist I met, the first being "I red the bible"? (another one missing in your list) The reasons you exposed seems too much alike what dishonest apologists tell about atheists, sorry.

You do realize that unless you can prove what the Bible says to be true , then what the Bible says is completely irrelevant . Unless you can prove that your god exists , then who cares what some book claims your god said ? I can quote all kinds of unproven information, but quoting it will never make it true .

If you need this guild to help you talk to family, friends or anyone else than you are doing something wrong. I will grant you that aren't being the topical jerk theist and you sound more confused than a arrogant A-hole that so many religious people who make videos like this. Now lets address your 'questions' "How's the family doing?" - we aren't close enough. "How are things going at work?" Doesn't matter "Do you have any type of religious background?" I was a christan, you might of called me a soft or a weak christian as I was never really religious. "Do you feel like you've come to the place you could say for sure that if you were to die today you'd go to heaven?" You can't go to a place that doesn't exist. 4:31 You listed four reasons and I'm none of those and I don't know of a single atheist that is an atheist because of those reasons. "They were educated into being an atheist" This is clearly false, the best you could say is that they were educated in science and they discovered that their pastors and parents lied to them about how reality works. That got them to honestly question their religious beliefs 2/3 Bad church/experienced loss. Again a another false reason. These kinds of things do cause people to begin to question their religious beliefs, but its nothing more then the first step for many on a long road to no longer believing in a god. "I'm going to have to change my lifestyle" No shocker that this one is false too. You don't have to change anything about your lifestyle. I know because not only have I heard many atheists telling their personal stories of how it didn't change them, but I personally didn't change my lifestyle one bit when I became an atheist. You will find some atheists do change their lifestyles but that's topical for those that are coming out of a deeply religious family that often hold some very bigoted views because of their religion. That's still not why they are atheists, rather its changes to their views that were held for no other reason but their religion. "Tell me how did you become an atheist?" This is a good question, the only good question that you asked in this whole video, sadly you already made up answers for. I'm an atheist because I asked my most religious friend some questions that didn't make sense to me. While she did her best to answer, her answers didn't actually answer anything. And not to put her down, but she couldn't give good answers because your lot doesn't have good answers, she at lest didn't try to lie to me or try to tell me what I think. "Has anyone explained christianity to me, without presser?" Yea, its why I'm no longer a christian. Your last question, there is only one requirement to get into heaven according to christianity. Kissing that Jesus butt, that's it. Its why the religious love to push fake deathbed conversion stories. Darwin is this great big boogeyman to so many christians and they love to push stories of a deathbed conversion, that he rejected evolution and embraced god and now he is in heaven. Yea the religion really is that anti-science, some people aren't so bad, some are really bad. Everyone who is religious is anti-science to some degree, you have to be to believe in something that goes against everything we understand about reality via science.

Why? That's my question. Why do you need to explain? Why do you need to prove, convince, influence? Why do you need to defend anything? Since when faith requires defense? To what end? I'm repeating my faith theorem: More you convinced God is good and merciful less wether you believe in Him matters. With assumption that there is no person on this planet to demonstrate God's active involvement in human lives. As if there would be one would be morally highly questionable. That leads to explanation of my original question: why? The question of wether God exists is completely irrelevant to individual human life.

Armed with these arguments, any Christian who takes your advice will look very foolish in the resulting conversation. While I appreciate John's less confrontational approach here, as a lifelong atheist, I would have to say that the following is the only reason why people are atheists: Because they were born that way. We are all born that way. Religions are strictly learned. They are not innate. Babies don't have beliefs at all, much less god-beliefs. Those of us who then avoid "education" (meaning, indoctrination) into a religion either as a young child or later on, simply remain belief-less, just as we were when we were born. This is the case for me, having been born into a long line of, at most, deists. Religion was simply a non-issue in my house when I was a kid, especially because the Christians who surrounded us in the rural midwestern US at the time (the early 70s) were much better at minding their own business, and they weren't yet politically activated. Subsequently, I have never been presented with sufficient evidence that any gods (or anything else supernatural, for that matter) actually exist (and yes, I have been "presented" with Christianity without "pressure" many times as well as studied some religions in fair depth because I find the concept interesting), so I have never believed that anything supernatural exists. It's really very, very simple. Now, some atheists do go on to become indoctrinated into a religion, usually because they're born into a religious family so they have no choice in the matter. They have all the nonsense pounded into their head from day one, and since it's done before they reach the age where the brain is sufficiently developed to reason, it tends to stick. But sometimes those people are able to escape their indoctrination. There are many triggers that can cause such a person to start to seriously question what they've been taught usually all their life to believe, some more traumatic than others, and I would count #s 2 and 3 on your list among them. HOWEVER, I don't think it's those things that "cause" their disbelief at all. Rather, I believe that it is simply that humans are innately rational thinkers -- It's one of the reasons our species is so successful, after all! -- so it's simply natural to have doubts about the existence of things that cannot ever be demonstrated to exist. So, when something bad happens to a believer, those underlying, natural doubts are exacerbated, much like pouring salt on an existing wound makes it hurt more. And then, when a person having doubts for whatever reason thinks and possibly studies their chosen religious texts some more and then finds out that there are no real answers to their doubts and also no sufficient reasons to believe that the god they believe in actually exists, they stop believing, same as they didn't believe when they were born. It really is as simple as that. This state of disbelief may or may not be permanent, as it is frankly easier to simply re-indoctrinate oneself or allow oneself to be re-indoctrinated than it is to face the harsher reality of...Well, reality. But sometimes, these people return to their natural atheism for the rest of their lives.

Wow 4 reason's for being an Atheist. I went to church, Sunday school when I was young read the bible. I was never forced to believe by my family. According to understandings, Unicorns talking animals all exist. God is a cold blooded murderer. There have been many religions through out time and I have come to the conclusion that I believe in one less god than you do. Oh and the main reason is the lack of evidence that there is a god. Yet I will never or have defended my belief as we should all be aloud to believe ever we want.

So every human on earth is born an atheist and is only educated into being a theist, not the other way around. I was born an atheist. My parents got me christened and assigned the evangelical christian label onto me. I had to go to religion classes for protestants, had to go to church and i never believed any of it. It just didn't make any sense and was glad when it was over. I left church when i was 21, when i heard that that option exists. Talking to christians is so annoying, because they make no sense. I studies human evolution and learned that christanity is just wrong, because there were no Adam and Eve. We share a common ancestor with chimps, which destroys the Original Sin story. Without original sin you don't need a Jesus to die on a cross for the sins. Without Jesus there is no Christianity. Or in short: Genetics prove Christianity wrong.

There is a fifth reason: the lack of any evidence a "God/Gods" exists, what's written in any book isn't evidence, it's the claim. Neither do I think there is a Heaven or Hell where we go to after we died, again due to lack of any evidence for it. Oh, and the Bible tells us only that you must believe in this "God", or else.

I was raised Catholic - although it never quite fit me. I was bored to death in church - and although I was rarely uprooting class, the only time I had to stay after school was because I didn't take church seriously enough. If I was "educated into atheism", I educated myself into atheism. I was always reading science books - it just fascinated me - so when I was ten I told my parents I was an atheist. I didn't hate the Bible. I read it quite a bit - especially the old testament. But in a way you would read a book about Norse myths. Now I don't really troll Christian channels. If people want to discuss their fate between themselves - let 'em. But if Christians dare to tread on scientific or philosophical subjects - or think they can educate atheists (which I'm not) I have to address it. No, I'm not an atheist. An atheist doesn't believe or lacks a belief in God is one definition. I'm not quite the believing kind. Belief is IMHO a bad substitute for knowledge - which needs supporting evidence. There is nothing wrong with *NOT* knowing in my opinion. So I'm an agnost - someone who lacks evidence of God. I postpone my judgement until I've got significant proof one way or the other. Note that the Christian God is not the sole answer to a God entity. He may have created the universe, but lets it run of its own accord. That's the absent God. Someone who is a vivid supporter of the works of Schopenhauer may pose the concept of the "evil God", the one that marooned us on an uninteresting rock in the outskirts of the universe without the chance of reprieve of our suffering or escape. In short, the question "is there a God" is a dangerous question to ask an agnost, because you may not get what you expected. I think I know the Bible pretty well. First, my upbringing and second, the sources I consulted to get my fingers behind these theological arguments. And yes, I got your question right. There are plenty of verses pointing in that direction, e.g. Acts 16:30-31, Eph. 2:8-9, Rom. 10:9 , John 3:16-17, John 14:6, Mark 1:15 - but also Acts 2:38 (which requires baptism) or Rom. 6:23 (which requires repent) or Luke 18:25 (which seems to require poverty). So, depending on which verse you want to take serious - there seem to be plenty of additional requirements.

    1. Neither school nor teachers inspired me or guided me into being an Atheist. Not even my parents. More about that later. 2. I didn't have a bad experience with church or religion. I did, however, have a bad experience with Christian classmates when they found out that I didn't believe. But I already didn't believe at that point, so they did not inspire me to not believe. As for them, this was their golden moment to take me in and win a conversion. Had they chosen to take me under their wing with the "love and kindness of Jesus," as we often hear about, and brought me into the fold, they might have converted me into their faith (as commanded by their god), as I was still a child and was open to lots of ideas. Instead of this, they chose mockery, hatred, and exclusion, which is NOT what Jesus would have done, according to the mythology. They ALL failed at the ONLY mission their god gave them. I am a living example of the failure of all Christians who were around me during my childhood, when I was most likely to engage in this type of belief. And although they are utter failures as Christians, they still view themselves as morally superior. 3. I did not have a bad experience in life that inspired me to dismiss a god, as I had already dismissed the idea of a god long ago, by simply not seeing any signs of a presence of a god. I don't hate any gods, however I do have a problem with god-believers who wish to force their beliefs upon me out of spite, fear, anger, and hatred. I don't need Theists to not believe like me, but Theists seem to need everyone around them to believe precisely just like them. That's their insecurity, which they call "faith." 4. Lifestyle was NOT a factor. I didn't have to "give up god," as I never had god in the first place. I did date a Christian preacher's daughter. She would have premarital sex with me (and 7 other guys before me), and engage in other "sins," but then go get forgiven. Then, she'd do it again. Wash, rinse, repeat. All the while, she judged me harshly for the "sin" of having sex wtih her. I suspect that she believed only because she loved to sin. I don't believe in sin, but I do believe in what is right or wrong, and being an Atheist has nothing to do with any of that. I don't claim to be morally superior. That's a Christian behavior. Doing whatever you want, then getting forgiven, then doing it again is NOT a moral way to live. It's filthy hypocrisy, to put it nicely. The reason why I've been a non-believer for my entire life is simply because my parents never brought up religion. I was not put through childhood indoctrination. This experience has me convinced that childhood indoctrination is essential to holding this type of superstitious mythological belief. I didn't have to change my life. I didn't have to "become" an Atheist, as I've always been one. For most of my life, until Christians in the Midwest started attacking me for it, I never really gave it much thought at all. To be fair, their persistent attacks on me, saying that I was a witch, a Satanist, non-human, and other acts of "othering" and dehumanization, didn't exactly inspire me to want to be around them. They are not nice people. This might be why they have to TELL everyone that they're a "good Christian," unless being a good Christian involves cruelty to anyone not in the tribe. Such a primate behavior. Today, I see no reason why I should believe in any gods, regardless of whether or not they are commercially-available for purchase. And if Christians truly believed the things they claim to believe, then they'd not behave in such a horrible and unsavory manner. This bad behavior includes telling lies about Atheists in order to demonize and dehumanize them. As for the Psalms passage about how "only a fool says in his heart says there is no god," I think that ANY philosophy that calls people who don't buy into it a "fool" is not worthy of consideration. Furthermore, any philosophy that does NOT allow any questioning or testing is most definitely not worthy of adoption. Christianity forbids questioning, under threat of eternal damnation. I've read the bible. I've listened to Christians. I've been here for almost 59 years, and Christians have never had anything new or interesting to say. While I do know SOME good Christians, it seems that most American Christians use their faith as post-hoc justification for anything and everything they want to do, no matter how horrible. They're fine with lying in service to the lord, as they believe that they have unconditional and eternal forgiveness. This is a feature of their built-in superiority. There are many more bad, horrific Christians, and they use the good ones as a shield behind which to hide like cowards. If a Christian tells me that they believe with all their heart and it gives them comfort, then I have NOTHING to say about that, at all. But when they say that their beliefs must be held by everyone, and that the law must facilitate this by forcing everyone to live in a way that the Christian wants (for their own comfort), while demonizing those of us who do not believe, then I have a lot to say on my behalf, out of self-defense. That's horrific and wrong. I could go on (thanks, Autism!), but I'll close with this: If the wages of sin is death, then Jesus did not die for anyone's sins. As they mythology indicates, he was "dead" for three days, then came back just to show that he could do it, before ascending into heaven. Having a horrific three-day weekend DOES NOT pay for ANYONE'S sins, let alone for EVERYONE'S sins. Besides, the idea of him suffering and dying for your sins is a story that is meant to inspire a great deal of guilt, as well as the sensation of debt. Christians like to avoid personal responsibility for the things they do in life, but I take full responsibility for everything that I do. I pay for my own mistakes. That's only fair.

I was a Christian until about 21-22, looked at the evidence for Christianity, realized it wasn't convincing anymore. I know a lot of Christians will say "no you are just _____" But tell me you think Christianity is convincing because of the evidence and then tell me what you think the evidence is. Because I can assure you as soon as you look at the evidence you'll find it isn't convincing.

I just wanted to share my perspective. You gave four reasons for why people are atheists, but I fit none of them. I was born an atheist. I have never believed in a god. I probably never will. The idea simply never made sense to me, so I rejected it. It was that simple. This doesn't quite fit the first reason you gave, which seemed to imply people BECAME atheists because they learned something about it. I didn't BECOME an atheist, I've always been one.

what about me an Australian Aboriginal who`s civilisation is over 65,000 years old at least. I am an Anti theist to jews and christian`s, to muslim`s i am Kafir. To get to christians heaven al you have to do is believe in god. Atheist to people like me are a living example pf Pascals wager, Most atheist's only deny the claims of god, Where as i state no gods exist , have ever existed, Nor will exist, Nothing you say to me will convert me, if try to convert me you are being racist, trying to replace my 65,000 years of heritage to genocidal misogynistic death cult. Your claim to know atheist's is rubbish, I was 5 years old when knew god was rubbish, I sculled the entire goblet of red wine and the priest screamed at my father never bring that demon hell spawn heathen onto church grounds. You are an absolute liar, You do not know anything about atheist's, let alone me Anti theist and KAFIR, You wanna debate me and try to turn me. So i can the whole internet what a load of rubbish you are. I have spent about 15 years researching the evolution of religion her is a short summary of my research IN comparison with my peoples civilisation and culture. Australian Aboriginal's have been on earth thousands of years longer than any god ever imagined. The oldest religions on earth, Hinduism (founded around the 15th - 5th century BCE) · Zoroastrianism (10th - 5th century BCE) · Judaism (9th - 5th century BCE) · Jainism (8th - 2nd century BCE). Islam = 620 BC Quran/koran= 1101 AD = Author = Hamid Al-Ghazali Hadith =Author Muhammad al-Bukhari, 9th century christianity= 1,400 to maybe 1,600 years . Judaeo beliefs dated 3,000 years( torah). Zoroastrianism= 4,000 years at most. Sumer was first settled by humans from 4500 to 4000 B.C. Australian Aboriginal civilisation and culture = 63,000 + BCE before jesus was dreamed up bye imbeciles steeped in ignorance and superstition, Australian Aboriginals. 35,000 years ago= discovered radiation sickness and erected a warning sign for radiation sickness. White christian euro trash = discovered radiation sickness 1946. 7,000 -14,000 years ago , Aboriginals watched and recorded the formation of the Great Barrier Reef .The so called global flood of noah`s, also the great flood in the Gilgamesh mythos. 40,000 years ago = mongo man buried , dug up bye white British racist c--ts and taken back to England , he has only been recently returned buy those who desecrated his burial site. In 1788 when white genocidal christians landed in Australia, They where horrified that woman in Aboriginal society had equal standing with men, they where included in all civil matters including law, These white christians then started killing whole Aboriginal communities, Men woman children new born`s because my people refused to deny the rights of woman who had had those rights for over 65,000 years. here is what your religion has done for humanity, Another from my home state in Tasmania, A British christrian sealer abducted an Aboriginal woman and her 8 month old baby girl, Raped them both then threw them over board like rubbish. USA 150,000 native American CHILDREN slaughtered bye christians because they would not convert. vatican island 1 well , over 30,000 skeletal remains of mainly young females = the Italian government has never held them to account, So are complicent and accessories to crimes against humanity. ireland , Over 900 very young to new born babies starved and thrown in a sewer because they when not blue eyed and blonde haired( sound familiar), If the where blue eyed and blonde haired the where sold to the USA federal immigration department for 5,000 to 15,000 odd dollars, Who then on sold for a profit to white christian childless couples.. The Polynesian people are the best natural navigators on the planet and because of christianity those skills where almost completely lost. This is christianity, every country they have infested, Genocide and cultural destruction followed, religion is poison to civilisation.

Have you really asked why people are atheist or do you just go with the mantra of others? I mean the reasons you give here, might be the starting point of peoples doubt towards god, but it wouldn't be the reason why they stop believing, the reason would come after studying and critically think about things. For me it was my first love, it was my starting point. I was 15 and in my religion it was wrong to love outside your religion. so of course that happen and one night I was just thinking that, if god is loving and good why does god hate us to love other people even if they don't believe the way we do. That's what started it for me, after that I have listen atheist and theist and critically and logically thinking things. Years just made it more prudent that I don't think there is a god, at least not any god of the religions we have in this world. If there is a god like being, it's most likely generic being, that just goes creating worlds and life in the universe and after that just forgets about them and lets nature take over, if there is a god. I don't claim to know that there ain't a being like that, but I don't believe that there is, that makes me an atheist. I'm also anti-religion tho. Religions are harmful and waste of effort and time. I'm sure many many good leaders or scientist have gone to priesthood or nunnary etc. and lost their life to religions for reasons. It's sad to think that but it's nature and life.

If you had ONE, only ONE honest bone in your skinsuit, you'd know you're an agnostic too. You don't know a deity exists, you just claim you do. But that's ok. No atheist expects a christian to be honest. You CAN'T! Usually we DO know more than you do, not always. What we usually DO know better than your run off the mill believer is your scripture. You know, we either come from a religious background or are curious and honest enough to KNOW what we argue against. Other than 99% of all christians who don't know what an atheist is, or a scientific theory. To adress your set of straw men you made up without EVER talking to an atheist (told you, nobody expects you to be honest). 1. Nobody educated me to be an atheist, I was presented with your evidence and it STILL didn't make me a believer because the book is so incoherent. Further, my dad - the atheist in our house - humoured my mom to get me baptized, he NEVER tried to persuade me in any direction. The same can't be said about my mother or school. Still, the evidence was so weak it didn't even get me to believe pre-elementary! 2. My bad experiences only started years after, when I encountered religion driven bigots YEARS after I knew, I can't believe this BS. Wow, you really do like to trot out all those straw men. Did you watch "Gawd's not dead" in preparation? 3. No again, no loss. My parents both died in my 40s, no other loss applies. And I won't go into the "hatred but still believing" stuff, read up on your poor arguments. 4. You do know, we can't just be cruel bigots and say "gawd demads it" or do sick shit and only pray to make it better. WE take accountability, responsibility. People like you, not so much. Prisons are full with believers. The number of raping christians is way higher than any other demografic. Same goes for any other crime. We ARE the better humans, we just don't need the threat of hell or the dangeling carrot of an unproven heaven to do it. So, you ask your "atheists" how they got there and STILL ended up with these decade old tropes? Liar liar, pants on fire! Yes, quoting that WOULD be dumb. But do you think it? And do you add the line "We all KNOW gawd exists"? You act as if christianity is this niche thing that only gets sold under the table. Most of us been there. Most of us read your books (yes, plural), several times. Have YOU ever sat down with an atheist, one that knows his shit, and have him explain evolution, cosmology, biology or geology (whichever his expertise) to you to see if reality confirms your assumption of a gawd? You sure did, like you ever met an atheist (that was sarcasm). Another problem is, you act as if YOUR religion is the only game in town. There are thousands of religions, tens of thousands of denominations in christianity alone and you ALL claim to have capital T Truth. To us, YOU are just another bad salesman, especially to those of us who never believed. So, I have homework for you. Either go and find some actual atheists to talk to, instead of making up lies and straw men apologists have put up to see them fall for decades or call a show like Atheist Expericence. But stop lying, just because it's convinient. And a question and a hypothetical. I guess you are down with the all loving tri-omni gawd. And we, of course according to you, have free will, given by your gawd. The question: Why am I given free will, if I get punished by using said free will to not be convinced of it's existence due to a lack of good, coherent evidence? The hypothetical: A lot of you people say, gawd can't show up because that would mess up our free will. He will NOT intervene in free will, but he is loving. Say a guy is r-ap-ing your grandkid. Why is your gawds love and need for free will stronger for the dude than your grandkid? And remember, if he's also a christian, all he has to do is say "sorry gawd", and all is forgiven. How do your square that?

why do you have to ask a person about their beliefs in the first place, why not just treat them as a person, why do you really need to ask the question are you really that bloody nosey and been so intrusive into someones life, and really are you interested in the answer because you seem to have the answer already in your head and dont listen to the answer the person gives, and I really doubt any atheist would take you up on the chance to get preached at by someone who does not listen to the answer they give and go straight to your "any fool" quotation the the bible because that what you really want to say, I really think if you started talking religeon to an atheist they would say "sorry dont believe it dont want to talk about it dont want to be preached at" you have it in your head the answers "everyone really believes in god but just denies it" because you really dont or cant understand what an atheist is and what they think, in your head all you have to do is chat to them and BLAM!! they are believers again it just goes to show how little you really know and how little you actually listen to the person, and really at the end of the day does it really matter if the person is an atheist as long as they are good people, or in your head is it that any atheist no matter how good they are at treating other people live their lives helping others that just because they are atheists are just deep down really bad people, because if thats they way you think its not them thats the problem its you.
