OG Benchmarks

Добавлен 3 янв 2021
I am a learning about computers and PC components by experimenting with older hardware. This channel follows my adventures as I put together older systems and compare their performance with standard benchmark tools. I mostly work on systems based on Intel's LGA 115X sockets and AMD's AM3 and AM3+. While I personally deal with less expensive hardware, I do try to follow newer components and will provide occasional commentary on the latest trends in PC building.
holiday PC upgrade - Ivy Bridge to Ryzen 5000
Over the 2022 holidays, my son got a PC upgrade. He started with an Ivy Bridge PC with Xeon 1240 v2 and RX 570 and bumped up to a Ryzen 5 5500 and a GTX 1660 Super. The performance jump was clear in synthetic benchmarks - Cinebench and Heaven - and noticeable while gaming. The RX 570 was repurposed by adding it to a Acer prebuilt (Intel i5-8400), which provided a huge upgrade to my daughter's old Lenovo AIO PC. Holiday joy all around.

AliExpress GPU - JieShuo GTX 1660 Super
Просмотров 2 тыс.2 года назад
I very recently picked up a GTX 1660 Super off of AliExpress for USD120. While this price is not exceptional in the current market, the fact that I received a brand new MSI GPU is surprising. The seller, JieShuo, seemingly picks up brand name GPUs through overstocks and markets the cards under their own brand (JieShuo). Shipping was very quick, the price was right, and all early indications poi...
How good is gaming on AMD APUs?
Просмотров 5642 года назад
The Ryzen APUs from AMD have included especially powerful integrated GPUs. While they may not be up to providing steady 1080p gaming in every situation, less demanding games like DOTA 2 and CS:GO can hit 60 fps without a dedicated GPU. AAA titles will need to be run at 720p or have resolution scaling (or both) to get 60 fps. In this video, the gaming performance of the 2400G, 3400G, 4700G (as t...
failed upgrade of an HP EliteDesk Mini with a Ryzen 2400GE
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
I recently tried to upgrade an HP EliteDesk 705 Mini G3 with a Ryzen 5 2400GE. The idea was to take a relatively inexpensive OEM mini PC and swap in a more capable integrated iGPU to create a cheap PC with decent low-end gaming abilities. I quickly learned that, despite having a compatible socket (AM4) and chipset (B300), the EliteDesk 705 G3 cannot accept a 2400GE. The correct model for this u...
mini-STX motherboard - Asus H110S1
Просмотров 5702 года назад
The mini-STX form factor is a very small form factor for motherboards. Smaller than mini-ITX, STX motherboards are just 140x146mm. This video is a box opening for the Asus H110S1 motherboard, one of the few STX boards that are available. The BIOS of the LGA 1151 board can be updated to accommodate either Skylake or Kaby Lake CPUs as well as up to DDR4-2400 RAM.
Westmere thin ITX desktop build with a mobile PGA 988 socket
Просмотров 3192 года назад
PGA 988 socket desktop motherboards can be found online. These motherboards accept Westmere mobile CPUs and are the only way to build a Westmere desktop PC in the thin mini-ITX form factor. The PGA 988 motherboards do have limitations, such as only accepting one stick of RAM. The motherboards also may have performance limitations with regard to supported power levels.
Intel D945GSEJT - Intel’s 1st thin mini-ITX motherboard
Просмотров 1682 года назад
The Intel D945GSEJT motherboard is likely Intel's first thin mini-ITX compatible motherboard despite being sold three years before the release of the thin mini-ITX guidelines. A key limitation is that the board was sold with a standard 45mm I/O shield, which is not in line with the thin mini-ITX guidelines. Replacement of the 45mm I/O with a 3D printed 25mm shield allows the motherboard to be i...
$50 test PC - advice for a first ever PC build

The standard advice for building a PC is to watch, learn, and then build. I would recommend building a low end test bench so that you can become familiar with the different connections between components before making your dream rig. This video suggests inexpensive used parts with a cost of around $50 for assembling a bona fide test bench that can run a Linux OS. So, for just $50, you can gain ...
teardown & benchmarking of Lenovo M72e Tiny PC

The Lenovo M72e Tiny PC is a great older system that shows off features in various OEM mini PCs. The M72e has an LGA 1155 socket and comes with either a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge CPU. With at least some of the Lovelace Nvidia GPUs calling for a new PCIe gen 5 power connection, there is a high likelihood that a number of older but nice PSUs will flood the market as new GPU buyers also upgrade their PSUs. the best GPU for a small form factor build

lessons learned in CPU & GPU bottlenecks

A very simple way to view CPU and GPU bottlenecks during gaming is through monitoring the core clocks of both the CPU and GPU. Often, either the CPU or GPU will hit 100% usage and limit or bottleneck the gaming performance. Analysis of data from DOTA 2 and Fortnite indicates that other factors, likely including memory transfer rates and RAM capacity, can also limit performance even if neither t...
OEM tiny barebones PCs instead of a thin mini-ITX build

A thin mini-ITX build is a great way to build a small PC, but the availability of OEM tiny PCs on the secondary market provide an interesting alternative. Tiny PCs are available from Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. A used system can go for as low as $50. Just looking at a tiny PCs motherboard, case, and cooling system, a used barebones OEM PC has at least a $100 in value toward a complete build. Fu...
Intel's thin mini-ITX design guide - 10 years later

G4 not support better than 2400ge ...
Your comment saved me from buying a G3. I came here to see if it was compatible, because it's so cheap. Thanks. You got yourself another subscriber now, too!
I'm glad my disappointment could help someone else. I still shake my head about this purchase. I didn't make a video about it, but I later got a GREAT deal on a barebones G4. I was going to install the 2400GE but a standoff for the CPU was broken. I could not get the cooler off the socket to install the CPU without destroying the whole thing.
I looking for hm65 motherboard.. i found some Chinese all in one mobo. I looked at the picture. It has 4pin atx power.. can normal 24pin atx psu powered the motherboard? Because I have extra unused atx psu and an old laptop. Want convert them to media desktop pc. But afraid to buy the motherboard.
The short answer is, I don't know. That 4-PIN power (normally right next to a 12 or 19V barrel jack is an alternate way to get power to a thin ITX mobo. That jack is often 12V, maybe 19V, and occasionally can take either voltage. If you look around, sometimes you can find a PSU (AC/DC adapter, not an ATX PSU) with a 4-pin end. I don't know if you can just use a 4pin CPU plug from an ATX PSU. By the way, those AC/DC adapter PSUs are quite cheap. If you're using a SATA drive, you'll likely need a special power cable from the mobo to the drug in addition to the SATA data cable.
Thank you for this! Great benchmarks for a $30 system I just purchased to run a small proxmox server.
no!
I have the hp elitedesk 705 g4 with ryzen 2400GE. I can emulate Nintendo switch, well not so good but it can.
there are also a few options you didn't mention; it has 2x sata internal, 44pin headers for storage, I use a CF 4gb>ide laptop adaptor. LVDV video output, Mini-PCIe, 1x 32bit PCI slot, get a right PCI angle adaptor and mount something like a 3DFX or Wifi card. I run Win98SE or XP to play my retro games on it, I even 3Dprinter an Amiga Case to hold the board , PSU and keyboard into one shell, lots of possibilities.
Am4 is a legendary socket but OEMs treated it with no respect. Incompatibility issues like this are prevalent
1 year update on the card please
My son uses it daily with a Ryzen 5 5500 for 1080p gaming. He's not into the latest games (Starfield, Cyberpunk, Hogwarts, or COD), but it has delivered for him without a hitch. If I were building his PC today, a 6-core Ryzen CPU would still be fine, but I would likely go for an RX 6600M off AliExpress. It's a bit better and has 8GB VRAM. The 6600M is around $170+, while the 1660S has gone up to $150+. Other options: 5500 XT or a 5700. Regardless, I have been pleased with the 1660S.
@@ogbenchmarks7127 do you think the rx580 would be as durable as your sons
@@ogbenchmarks7127 also would you trust their asus refurbed cards
@@thedude-ty4nm I think so. I have considered many times picking up an RX 580. Two things have stopped me. (1) The card isn't getting driver updates anymore. (2) The 580 does take a decent amount of power for its performance. If you just want to get old server PC (bigger PSU) for 1080p gaming over the next two years, then the 580 should be fine. If you want a system with more life to it, then I think the 580 might disappoint. It also depends on which games you want to play.

I think I've heard a few people call it "thini" ITX... either that or I accidentally invented it myself 😂
I've been binge-watching your videos for a few days now. They've been very good, except... well, this one didn't age too well did it? 😅
LOL. No. It was a complete miss. I don't know what made me think I could predict what component prices were going to do when I typically buy parts that are several generations old.
As mentioned, the reason you don't find major OEMs utilizing the Thin mini ITX spec based designs is because they have their own proprietary designs, This systems were targeted primarily for the "channel market" (System integrators, DIY) and the design guide was targeted for the various ODMs (original design manufacturers - including motherboard manufacturers, AIO chassis suppliers etc.). The goal and intent of the spec was to ensure interoperability among different motherboards and chassis solutions so smaller companies can take these component and offer differentiated solutions from major OEMs like Dell, HP, Lenovo etc. The interoperability is also what allows one to replace/upgrade the motherboard, CPU, RAM, Storage, wifi module or even the chassis, if a better resolution display if offered. Differentiation is a key way the smaller, local OEMs and system integrators can compete with OEMs. this effort ensured the motherboard and AIO chassis solutions developed in the market were compatible. Once this goal was achieved, Intel let the channel ecosystem innovate further on its own. I wouldn't say it is a bust just because it didn't get much traction in the US - this model is alive and healthy in other parts of the world where there are still smaller regional/local OEMs. In the US, major OEMs have almost all the market on AIOs because the warranty process is easier if there is an issue.
Thanks for sharing your lack of knowledge. Was clear when called that thermal pad a sticker. It is there to transfer heat from the ssd, they are kinda oily to help with the heat. Also I just had the same thought but figured must be a bios restriction. only the SFF and mid towers can do ryzen from what i found. Thanks for trying it

Thanks for the video, at the end of yhe video you mentioned something, did ETA Prime upgraded a 2400ge with a 2400g in his video? Seems like the link to that video was taken down.

hi i have HP Elitedesk Mini 705 G3, it has A12-9800E processor, do anyone know whether this motherboard support ryzen 1st gen / athlon 3000G ?
This may help someone. 705 G3's came in 2 version one with APU (a6/a8/a10/a12) AM4 CPU and 1st gen Ryzen PRO (only PRO 1xxx Ryzens) BUT! Whats important the motherboard dont share bios, APU bios is P06_xxx and the Ryzen Bios is P09_xxx. Boards cannot be flashed so you cant change APU TO Ryzen and vice versa.
That is great information - very helpful. Thank you for sharing.
I have an elitedesk 705 g4 mt with a ryzen 5 2400g. I was planning to buy a ryzen 7 3700x to upgrade it. Will the ryzen 7 3700x be supported even after bios update?
@@HK23453 No, I don't think a 3700x will work on the 705 G4, at least I haven't found any information that would be able confirm this. You might want to check/search around if a 3400g could work, then probably the 3700x would work since you have a Mini Tower which can opt to use a dedicated GPU.
do you know if this applies to the g4's?
its repurposed mobile chips so they are cheep and i think thats awesome af
Thank you for sharing. I think these cards are great. My son (who is using this GPU) is very pleased. I hope they have good long term use. Admittedly, games are likely to become much more demanding soon, so the useful life of a 1660 Super is likely limited.
This was really fun. You have a knack for presenting. Hope to see the custom case soon!
Thank you. We're having some nozzle issues with the 3D printer, but we should have it back up soon.

Thank you so much. I need to post more but work sometimes gets in the way!
im gonna ignore the mini pcs now
I admit that they aren't as good as I originally thought. They have proprietary issues, and cooling isn't great (or quiet). If only more reasonably priced options for thin mini pc cases were available!
you sound like ethan klein (h3h3)
LOL. Maybe ethan klein sounds like me!
If you use cpuZ, what is the bios revision and date? I just bought the SFF 705 G3, not the mini, and i see in userbenchmark someone ran it with a Ryzen 1800X.
so is the card u ordered from aliexpress legit? i just ordered one a few days ago and cant wait for it to arrive
It is legit. It runs great. I bought it from a listing that said it was new back in late November. Since then, many reports have surfaced that some cards are being sold as new but were used in mining. Those "new" listings are now gone and replaced with "98% new" or similar. I bet my card was used. Still, it was very very clean and runs fine (GPU clocks and temps). I am very satisfied, and the price was perfect.
@@ogbenchmarks7127 thank you very much, took some weight off of my heart knowing everything will be fine now.
Isn't the A10 Amd CPU still in the AM3 socket?
I know far less about AMD CPUs than Intel, but the HP 705 Mini G3 has an AM4 socket. There were a number of A10 CPUs across several architectures - Piledriver, Steam Roller, and Excavator. They may have spanned several sockets. The A10-9700E is Excavator and takes AM4.
Great video really informative
Thank you
Mine is solid stuck at 400mhz and won't even go higher on gaming and daily basis I'm sick of it other can their normal speed I'm locked at 400mhz :)
8:30 it should be noted that CPU’s will work with almost any ram speed but it will run at the fastest speed that they both accept. The same thing applies to SATA, PCIE and Networking. They are all forwards and backwards compatible. So a 1600MHz stick in a 1066MHz cpu will run at 1066. And a 1333Mhz stick in a 1600MHz cpu will run at 1333Mhz. This will leave a little bit performance on the table So if you see a good deal for 1333/1600MHz memory don’t worry about speed. Also you can get most 2nd gen i5 CPU’s from AliExpress for a little under 20 dollars. Even the i5 2500K costs under $25. Might take a couple months to arrive though.
Thank you for this. I subscribed based on this video (sub#40). I am looking for a suitable card to upgrade the GT 1030 in my Dell Optiplex 3020 SFF (Haswell) and the cheapest one I found was a WX 4100 - good to know that it's a perfect match!

I wanna buy a new gpu what the perfect one betwen Rtx 3060 2070. 3050 . Gtx 1660 super on alixpress
I do like the GTX 1660 Super, but I think the real value card is the RX 6600. The 6600 (or 6600m with identical performance) is available on AliExpress for US$200-210 from multiple reputable sellers - JieShuo, Mllse, SOYO. The 6600 is stronger than the 1660 Super and 3050 and perfect for ultra 1080p or even some 1440p gaming. You can jump to the 6600 XT or 6650 XT and surpass the 2070 and 3060 for US$250 or higher. Two issues... (1) Many people favor Nvidia. (2) Ray tracing performance will be limited in the 6600.

@@ogbenchmarks7127 you would be better off buying a motherboard with an rPGA 988b socket and an HM75 or HM76, HM77 chipset and two slots RAM. Hi, how is GPU performance since you installed?
It's excellent. I'm certain that this is a legitimate MSI Ventus GTX 1660. I haven't benchmarked the card properly, but I have run the card on Windows 10 with Nvidia drivers, and the card reads correctly on GPU-Z. I would have been happy with an off-brand card, but the MSI branding is a bonus. If I re-ordered the card, I doubt I would get another MSI - could be a different brand or off-brand.
Thanks. I have a 230W PSU, would it be enough for this GPU?
@@xploit811 I think you need something bigger. This GPU can draw 125W. If your CPU is 65W TDP (turbo will add to that), then you are minimally at 190W. The motherboard will take a decent amount, and then add little items like fans, storage, and RAM. I wouldn't be comfortable putting that much load on a 230W PSU. A 300W would work, but for the same price you can probably find a 400 or 450W. Keep in mind that you need an 8-pin PCI connector for the GPU.
@@ogbenchmarks7127 it's not a 1660 super but as good as the normal 1660?
Hello did you tried ryzen 3 Pro 2200g/ge? In this video from HP support says that it accepts these 2 APU's. ruclips.net/video/xYtbHeCOh0s/видео.html
So Nvidia drivers and GPU-Z actually detect it? It's legit? I'm planning on buying a JieShou RTX 3060 on AliExpress and I'm afraid I might get a fake GPU.
Since this video I done all my updates and loaded Win10. On Win10 with Nvidia drivers, GPU-Z reads the card just fine. Late last year, there were rumors (Moore's Law is Dead) that Nvidia has mountains of GPU stock. We might be seeing Nvidia (and AMD) finding alterative channels to sell out inventory to make space for the new generation of cards. In short, I think these cards are legit and safe to buy (for what that's worth). I understand your concern, but these sellers and cards have many positive reviews.

Agreed. The cooling "solution" is not very satisfactory. For all the noise, they still run pretty hot when under load.
I know what you mean. I wish ETA Prime would have mentioned then noise, instead of the mini I would have gone for the SFF version. I reapply new thermal paste didn't really help and went into power options but it was already set at power saving mode and passive cooling. I tried changing the thermal pads on the heatsink. Nothing I tried has really improve the therrmals and noise. Now I'm too scared to even buy any type of mini PC for gaming cause that noise is horrible.
Also for some reason ETA Prime used MSI Afterburner to display the temps and he was getting slightly better temps than me, not sure why. Maybe because his PC only had an NVME inside. My PC has a nvme and SSD. I'm guessing the SSD takes some of space inside and makes the thermals slightly worse?

The AMD 300U and up supports nvme. So with a $40 nvme to pcie adapter you can get a PCIe 3.0 4x lanes available for multiple uses. Including running a decent GPU. I personally tested the RX 6700 XT on the 300U and it's capable of 1440p gaming even though it's only running 2 cores with 4 threads.
