Carerra Hellcat MTB resurection Part 1
Просмотров 298День назад
This sorry specimen landed in the workshop. It's been gifted to the husband of a friend and they want to see if I can resurrect it. It's going to need more than 2 coats of looking at. It's been left outside for at least 2 years! It's a case of ran ok when parked. It does show signs of having been looked after at some point in its life. It's a nightmare, I think there were a few clips and a hidden screw. Unfortunately I didn't record the strip down as I thought it was just going to be a dodgy switch. I don't do parts, least not for vacuums. All the parts ar actually available on Amazon. I think the belts and motors are the same for nearly all the models.

      Oh that reminds me, Thank you. I managed to work out what Bottom brakes I needed for the defy so I could use a really old Carbon Power2Max power meter. I've never named to work out why it didn't fit as all the forums said it should work in a standard Push fit Shimano Hollowtec BB. But it didn't it was too tight and I had to "adjust" the plastic inserts to make it work. Anyway it should have been the FSA Mega Exo 24mm Pushfit. Fits perfect now.

    I have this exact truing stand. I don't understand how the individual calipers work without a "self-centering" dial on the caliper arms like the more expensive truing stands. How do you know if and when your wheel and arms are centered? The wheel could be off centered from the start and not know it and throw the whole tuning off.

    • @Lockdown_workshop
      @Lockdown_workshop Месяц назад

      the wheel are are just used as a guide. Wheel entering depends on the wheel design itself. Not all wheels are actually centred some are slightly offsets so Don't worry too much unless you are building from scratch. If building from scratch you ten to use a centre jig as well. I have a set of camping Honda wheels that are 3mm offset from centre to accommodate the freewheel hub on their spoke layout. You also see this on disc sheelsets too. Back to the guides. I tend to use these just to find the high spots and for most wheels that's good enough. but if you are really bothered you can go down to fractions of millimetres using the dial gauge. Back in the day when I used to build wheels I just has a set of old forks with a nail I used to clamp onto the fork with a jubilee clip on each side. worked fine for me.

    • @deltafour1212
      @deltafour1212 Месяц назад

    How old is the tire? It looks like is all cracking. I have had great luck with the Continental GP4000 and now GP5000's. Very puncture resistant and very low rolling resistance. I've tried a few alternatives because of the price, like the Michelin Power Cup Competition, and the PZero. The Pzero got a 1 inch cut in it from glass that was not repairable, on my second ride with the tire. The Michelin power cup comp did better, but didn't seem to be as puncture resistant at the GP5000. So despite the price, I am back with Contintental tubeless ready tires. TR are required for my hookless rims. I don't use them without tubes.

      It's a personal preference and don't take it too seriously, I poke a bit of fun at them. I ride with other cyclist who use them to keep up with the group ride. they have their place...but I ride a Ducati Monster too so that's my e-bike. I do think the e-bike riders that mod their bike and then go and ride the trails at renters at ridiculous speed need to go and get a motocross as it was very dangerous how thy were riding and not respectful of beginners on normal pedal power. I also notice their bike skills were zero and had to slow down for simple obstacles a lot more than I did. I beat most of them.

      Difficult question, the BTF Coaching answer….”it depends”. without seeing the bike or understanding your aspirations it’s hard to say. However. Started on a second hand aluminium specialised allez with Sora gear that was very old and nor very well. I rode that bike for 2 seasons before moving to a Carbon Holdsworth. There is nothing wrong with Sora very robust, can be a bit fiddly to index sometimes.

    Try milKit sealant. Doesn't dry out and seals so well you only need to add air every week or so. I've gone back to tubes and add 20ml.of milKit inside. Get a small hole and it'll seal.well enough between the tube and tyre that you can leave it until the weekend to repair. If not, pop a bit of tyre off the rim and slap a patch on it. Job done!

    • @Lockdown_workshop
      @Lockdown_workshop 4 месяца назад

      The goo I use does appear to dry out and GCN also refers to sealant drying out over a period of time, though they do contradict themselves on how long that is. You can see on one of my videos that I have to scrape dried out sealant from the rim and tyre where it's turned into a paste. As most of these are water based I suppose you could add water periodically as the sealing media is still in the tyre. I'll have a look at milKit as I'm not tied to a particular product, thanks for the tip. I currently use Muck-off as I was given a big bottle of it by one of my regulars. Personally I still run tubeless on my Giant Propel and I'm about to convert to Tubeless on my winter rims which don't require tape (Campagnolo Zonda). Watch out for that video. I was also going to attempt setting up tubeless on a non-tubeless 26" rim with non tubeless tyres for a laugh using gorilla tape. Haven't got round to that yet.

    • @phil_d
      @phil_d 4 месяца назад

      @Lockdown_workshop It's the difference between latex and synthetic latex. Latex will dry and leave a layer of rubber on the inside of the rim, and I find that the sealant's effectiveness decreases over time as the latex solidifies and leaves the 'water' element. Synthetic sealants like milKit do not behave like this and some may argue that lacking the aggressive drying capabilities it does not seal as well. milKit compensates for this by adding small fibres as well as being relatively thick as sealants go. I set up tyres that are 35c or bigger as tubeless. The pressure is low enough for sealant to be effective and if it all goes wrong I can just pop a small bit of tyre off the rim, wipe off the milKit back to the rubber and slap on a glue patch.

    A month ago, I changed the bottom bracket on my Giant Contend SL1 2021 using similar press out, press in bottom bracket universal tools. The Lixana bottom bracket kit cost me £25 delivered. It has lots of cup and shim sizes to cover different bearings. These kits are better than the impact version tool, especially on carbon frames. My Contend being aluminium frame uses BB86 or BB-RS500-PB cartridge style press-fit bottom bracket. I got the BB from a trusted UK bike parts seller. A bike shop quoted £30 plus the BB to do thsame job,and I would have to wait a few days. They would have to order the BB in! So by doing the work myself, I saved a lot of money and a lot of time. I didn't have the bother you had though. Great vi

    Can we do 11-51t cassette with 53-39t crank on road bike

    • @Lockdown_workshop
      @Lockdown_workshop 10 месяцев назад

      I would say no the chain length you would need even with a GS rear derailleur. 51-53 would stretch too far or 11-39 would mean the chain was slack. Shimano recommends that a 11-34 cassette is the biggest you can use with the GS cage. However you may be able to just get away with an 11-36. Shimano state that an 11-28 is the max for a SS cage; but i have fitted an 11-30 to several bikes and it just has enough to keep the chain tension and doesn’t over stretch when on big ring to big ring (which you shouldn’t do anyway as that is crossing the chain)

    I love a bike repair video, but the music made this unwatchable.

    11 speed chains have to be changed at .5% wear, whereas 10 speed & below its .75%, if a 11 speed chain reaches .75% wear then uou would be best replacing the cassette too, as it would of worn the teeth.

      I’ve run ultegra 6800 on one of the bikes it’s done 30,000km it’s on it original crank and cassette. It’s had 9 chains. All chains changed at .75%. F you look after your chain and clean / lube regularly it’s not an issue. Can’t vouch for duraace as they are made of cheese

    Not too long ago 52-38 was for wimps. It had to be 53-39 and before that 53-42. And you had to justify why you wanted 23 on the back when you should be using 21.
