Thank you for this demo. I'm a new knitter using continental style and having a hard time achieving any consistent result with standard western purling. I've been exploring combination knitting but found other demos left me with questions that yours has answered.
Food looks great, but why Queer Joe?
Unsure of what you’re asking? Queer as in homosexual/gay, if that helps answer it.
@@queerjoe - No I get it, but just kinda weird to put that in the name. Like if I had a cooking channel, and I said "Straight Bryan" would be kinda unnecessary for me to put straight in there. Like just let the cooking speak for itself.
@ It’s just a way of distinguishing myself from all the other ordinary Joes and it’s consistent with my blog and RUclips channels. Would CowboyJoe have elicited a similar question?
That was fascinating. Great recipe tutorial. I learned so much. Thank you!
Mashallah Tabarkallah thank you for sharing 🎉🎉
uh...YUMMY!!! 😍😍😍
Way to complicated!
Do you have a link to purchase or the size name? The only latch hook near me is a big size for worsted weight yarn in rugs, I need this for fingering weight yarn.
Do they have the same Emotional Support Chicken Crocheted??? I'm not a knitter and want to make a Emotional Support Chicken!!
A quick search of Ravelry came up with such a pattern (though I can't vouch for it...there are all 5-star ratings) - www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/emotional-support-chickentm-crochet
I'm really into this
Thank you for this tutorial. I knit the brim of this hat years ago and got stuck at the grafting vs k2tog and frogged the whole thing. I will reknit it thanks to you
I have a Knitter's Pride Jumbo Ball Winder and I have experienced the problem you mentioned about a portion of the yarn winding differently than the rest. It's a bit annoying. I don't remember what I paid for it, but I believe I got it on a sale for approximately half what it would have normally cost. Even with that issue, I still prefer it to the small plastic version I used before. But, based on what you've shown in this video, I'm seriously considering the Stanwood Jumbo Yarn Winder. Thanks for the info!
I have one of those red and cream plastic ones. Works ok for small to medium cakes. The best thing about it right now is the fact that the windy thing comes off. I’m arguing with a half a hank worth of tangled yarn, I can take it off to pass it through the tangle then put it together again to wind up the untangled yarn. I can’t imagine using another winder the same way. I just bought a yarn swift so hopefully I never have a mess like that again 🤦♀️ my next investment is a large ball winder. My first time dealing with a hank of yarn and it slid to the floor (neither my daughter or I could catch it) and it became yarn barf, on day three of detangling 🤦♀️ almost there. Of course it had to be fingering weight yarn 😵💫🤣. I use Bobbie pins or Barrett to secure the loose end on the outside of the cake.
etsy has some really nice wooden ones. i'll be looking at those and hoping i can find an off brand version of your suggestion. do i need a swift? if so, what's better, table top or clamp?
You will definitely need a swift. I prefer clamp-on swifts, as they’re more stable when I want to wind really fast. This is my favorite one and it’s half the cost of what I paid for mine - amzn.to/3AXsvd7
Hi Joe. Great video. Do you feel that a folded hem gives as much grip around the calf as opposed to a ribbed cuff?
With hand-knit socks, I find it’s correct sizing of the circumference of the cuff and the stiffness of the fabric that keeps it from slouching…that it has nothing to do with the elasticity of ribbing. The ribbing does create a similar fabric stiffness, but no additional “grip” per se.
@ out of interest, how much negative ease are you using. I’ve heard of some people using up to 25% for the circumference and 10% on the foot length?
@ not sure…I think my negative ease changes between socks. I just measured a slightly stretched out sock from this video and here are my sock and foot measurements: Sock Negative Ease Helical Striped Sock Foot/Leg: - Foot Circumference (widest) 10.5” (26.7 cm) - Calf Circumference (widest) 12.5” (31.75 cm) - Length (foot) 10” (25.4 cm) Sock: - Circumference Foot 9” (22.9 cm) - Circumference Ankle 9” (22.9 cm) - Length Foot 9.75” (24.8 cm) Negative Ease: - Circumference Foot 1.5” - 17% - Circumference Ankle 3.5” - 39% - Length Foot .25” - 2.5%
NIce to see 3 other winders , pros and cons I have a jumbo plastic ball winder with the yarn feeder piece and the 2 arms that revolve around to form the cake , I let the yarn feed straight into the feeder piece like with the wooden one , not from the side Not expensive, no exposed gears , and like that it will hold large amts,
Thank you for this video!! I was really needing a reference on how this would be helpful for knitting and I'm thankful for this demonstration!
Glad it was helpful!
First time watching one of your videos. One question, why must you tell us who you like to have sex with? Why do you think we care?! Why can’t you just be Joe? You want respectful comments, you must be respectable. You’re not being respectable!
Hi would i be able to send you a photograph of my machine I need somone to tell me what kind it is so I can buy needles for it. Its name is helping hand but that doesn't seem to be a popular name. It's in ireland but may have come from America. And might be a golden fleece but with a stores own name printed on it.

@queerjoe thank you I dont have face book so it will be the latter. I will figure that out in the week thanks so much !!
Thank you :)
Fiber artist is worth the price
I bought a cheap jumbo yarn winder and am very happy with it. A friend said she had the very best, a Stanwood. We compared them and could find no difference at all so I do wonder why the Stanwood ones are so expensive compared with the eastern one I bought which works exactly the same for less than half the price. We concluded that there is no difference at all. Mine works perfectly, I use it a lot and have never had a problem. I avoided the horizontal winder as I know winding that way would make my arms ache and, anyway, I couldn't afford one. I have a small plastic covered winder as well for small amounts of yarn and that works perfectly as well though the guide arm can be a bit stiff to pull out.
Awesome
This was a great video and a well written pattern. I was able to make it with the magic loop circular method. It can out great. Thank you for this very thorough video. I learned a lot of new things.
Thanks for the kind words and also for confirming this can be done using Magic Loop. My theory was that it would work fine…glad it proved to be true :)
I would like to make this hat and buy the pattern from you. I would just like to know if this would work on a circular needle or using the magic loop method for circular knitting. I'm not a fan of double pointed needles.
@@manewmana you can definitely convert this to magic loop. The doublepointed needles help me join in-the-round without twisting and also help with counting stitches for the short-row sections. You can use stitch markers to help with the stitch counting.
I’ve wrapped hundreds of cakes with my Fiber Artist Supply winder. As the manufacturer mentioned, keeping the yarn guide at a position closest to the ball is critical. I also have found that the winder works best for me when I wind in a counter-clockwise direction (using my right hand with the crank on my right side when the unit is facing me). I start slow. Occasionally I will still feel some slippage so when I’m beginning, I stop periodically and give the yarn cake a squeeze to help distribute the wound yarn evenly on the bobbin (almost always needed if I hit a yarn tangle from the skein I’m winding and it pulls the wound cake out of alignment). This seems to solve the yarn slippage completely for me and the cakes are neat and easy to use without having to untangle anything. I love this winder, especially because I don’t have to attach it to a table.
I started out with the exact same cheap plastic winder you showed. It does okay I guess as long as you don’t have to wind large quantities of yarn in one go. I now have a jumbo ball winder with weighted tension discs that makes the most perfectly wound yarn balls. It is made of mostly metal and the gears are encased. The company discontinued the production because they didn’t sell very well - not due to low quality or performance but due to the hefty price tag of almost $400… I was lucky to secure the last one made and I love using it…
I really do need something like this but a mechanical one to wind my t shirt yarns
I’ve just purchased an inexpensive electric yarn ball-winder, so I may be updating this video to include a review of that too. - amzn.to/3zNQcDN
I love to see a video of your post repairs techniques. Thank you great video!
I bought the first one for 14€ inc shipping. I love using it. I have to watch some youtube podcast while im winding so the time goes really quickly. It takes only 3-4 minutes each ball. I had to tape the metal guide in place and with some types of yarn it doesnt wind properly , (the yarn winds around the tube instead of going up and down the ball)but I figured how to guide the yarn with my hand when that happens. For the money Im more than happy to put up with such glitches. I have limited space now days with all my yarn and sewing machines so that was a considerations. I also bought a wooden umbrella which functions perfectly for only 20€ inc shipping. Now with those two gadgets, I can dye yarn .
My apartment is tiny and I don’t have a craft table. Where is a good place to put a yarn winder. Do i need a swift? Thank you!
If you have a counter or table edge that’s not too thick, that’s the best place for a winder. I’ve even used my coffee table. If you’re winding skeins or hanks into cakes of yarn, you’ll definitely need a swift. This is my favorite - amzn.to/3KD0SqV
@@queerjoethank you thank you! ❤
I believe in the Union Label as well. Don’t see it much anymore, though. Sad.
Omg I've been doing exactly that! I was wondering if it had a name 🤣! Thanks for sharing. It's visually the best ribbing by far and if you use left hand picking rather than wrapping/ throwing you will fly through the work 👍 It works in the flat as long as you keep working through the leading leg too!
I have the Starwood winder, also, and what I don’t like is how jerky it can be with turning the handle. I have the wooden “Amish” swift, and I’ve noticed that my yarn tends to get stretched out a little bit. Am I doing something wrong?
I've never used an Amish swift before, but I always try to make sure my swift is turning with as little tension on the yarn as possible. As for the jerkiness, the only time mine is jerky is when the distal arm vibrates a lot. Two things that I find that helps with this...first, when I attach the distal arm, I put the washer under the u-shaped end, not on top as most photos show. I also put a t-pin through the rubber gasket/buffer parallel to the the surface it's on...which tightens it to the arm-piece and also allows for less movement and vibration.
Oh thank you! I will try these things!!
I hate my Stanwood. Makes the balls too tight and smaller at the bottom which makes the yatn slide off the smaller end. Tried everything to adjust it and can't. Got new ones and no winder is perfect. Boo
I just found your podcasts, so this is a response to an old episode. Anyway, I currently own the least expensive model and you’re right about all the issues. My husband (the problem solver) was able to fix all the issues so it’s working much better. But, man, it was a headache. The yarn can still get wrapped up underneath so I have to watch it closely. Thanks for the review. I may get the one you recommended so I can have bigger balls of yarn. I’ll be watching all your podcasts. ❤ and stay safe.
Can you manage this with magic loop or only 3 DPNs? I hate knitting with DPNs cause there’s so many points.
Not with my method, you couldn’t. This method needs DPNs-sorry.
I have been avoiding the Beekeeper's blanket like the plague because the thought of sewing together ALL THOSE HEXIS makes me break out in hives. But this tutorial has changed my thinking, and now I think I'll be knitting a Beekeeper! I certainly have enough scraps and minis. Thank you!!!
Why not slip the two stitches purlwise at the same time? It's more efficient.
Thanks very much Joe. That is great information and very easy to understand!💯
I broke the clamp on my Stanwood jumbo ball winder, trying to fasten the clamp around the "lip" on the underside of the edge of a card table. (Stanwood did send a replacement clamp; I just have to install it -- and find a thinner table to clamp the winder to!) Of the cheap plastic winders, I trust the KnitPicks version most, as the build quality seems better. I also just got a wooden ball winder (a different brand, in gently used condition, from Etsy), and am excited to try that out (on the thin-topped desk in my craft room, as I don't wish to break any more clamps!).
HA!!!!! I detest kitchner stich and sewing things together, this is going to make things so much easier! Thank you so much for sharing, sir!
I just got the pattern too.
Fantástico!❤
I also ordered a kit from the Knitting Tree LA. I purchased Hennifer Lopez and will start her tomorrow.
I just saw one that cost about $550 over on Bag-O-Day Crochet Channel.. it has an electric foot pedal! Idea about the last ball Winder that you actually recommended as a good inexpensive one... I wonder if you could take a paper plate and cut the middle out and then slip that on first and then set up your yarn and get going. You know kind of on the same idea as when you don't want your beaters to splash you when you are whipping cream to make your own set and forget ice cream in the freezer.? If you have or paper plates you can simply poke your beaters through and use it that way you might actually have to expand the holes a little so that you can slip them off of the wide part of your beaters that are supposed to keep goop from getting up where you insert them. Or you can just cut to the middle and then cut out a circle or a rectangular space for them to slip through, and that way it covers your bowl so you and everything else on your counter stays clean.
Proximal and distal aren't really that strange. Its just latin for Near and Far.
I believe your first knot is a surgeon’s knot instead of a square knot. A square knot is right over left then left over right but this does come undone occasionally as does the surgeon’s knot unless, as you discovered, you leave long tails and weave them in. The last example of the weaver’s knot is a very interesting way to make this. I have never seen anyone starting with a slip knot. I make it and while the yarn seemed to be slipping as I tightened it the yarn did break before the knot came undone so the yarn must just have been stretching. I will have to try this method with my very slippery but very strong yarns ( bamboo rayon or silk) and see how this works. Thanks!
Thanks QJ!!! Wish I'd seen this before I'd bought my FIRST ball winder. My balls would have been huge (pun intended) had I bought one of these first!!!
I just got the pattern. I am wanting to use the same yarn the designer was using in her video. I am waiting for her to respond. Please keep us apprised of your progress. Thank you. Enjoy.
I just needed to ask, does the weavers knot remain secure in projects particularly after washing?
My experience has been that it depends on the yarn. But if the knot holds during the tying and knitting, then it is secure afterwards as well. I know right away because some yarns just don’t do well with this knot and come loose immediately when I pull on it.
