Preview - Juno106 and DX-7 arpeggiation and DMX sequencing??

I had the opportunity to test out MIDI Goblin's arpeggiator on some classic retro synths today. The Juno 106 and DX-7 (both are missing arpeggiators for some odd reason) The arpeggiator on the 106 isn't perfect (because it either doesn't have a local control option or I just cant seem to figure out how to toggle it off/on) And the DX-7 seemed to respond a bit erratically to note-off messages - ...

Working on making a proper video that shows how patch morphing works. Note: it works for synths that use midi CC for their parameter values - no NRPN message support yet. Its really fun and can run at the same time as the arpeggiator, sequencer, midi lfo and with a little extra effort, it even works with some synths that have no midi output. Its officially Morphin' time! pre-order MIDI Goblin h...

I thought I already added a comment but I don’t see it here, so. I’d love to get one asap and happy to pay shipping. It’s all understandable with a bespoke thing like this.
Get some out to a few synthtubers to help drum up more orders to cover things.
I'm 100% happy with paying for shipping. :) This is a great project and I want to see you succeed! I'm really looking forward to trying the Midi Goblin!

I really appreciate the honesty in these videos and always enjoy watching them! On the shipping question, I would worry that if you started doing them gradually it would feel like one long arduous chore sucking up all your money and time. There's also the Kickstarter effect of people commenting and complaining if others have received theirs first. If, instead, you saved and sent them all out as one batch, that would be one triumphant moment (as well as probably having economies of scale in terms of your time?) Or obviously, you know, send me MINE and delay all the others 🙂 As others have said, I'd be really happy to find a way to donate a bit extra. Not to make it quicker, just to make it less difficult. I know this is the way things happen in business sometimes, but it doesn't sit well with me to be looking forward to my luxury toy while you, the inventor/supplier, are worried about making ends meet.
made a new kickstarter update regarding shipping and those who want to pay extra for priority shipping! - sorry about the delay going to trickle them out. It might end up be a shlog but I think the pros outweigh the cons.
I'd been holding off on ordering one until Xmas, but I'm hoping that my pre-order (w/ shipping included) will help out with you being able to ship some units out to those who've been waiting. This project is awesome, and I can't wait to see people using these.

Also Will agree with the others, I'm in no hurry and if needed, i don't mind paying shipping.
made a new kickstarter update regarding shipping and those who want to pay extra for priority shipping! - sorry about the delay
Wasn't shipping like 7& or something to be charged on delivery? I thought that was pretty cheap. I would be happy to pay 20$ or such to make sure you can get the initial order off your plate and free you up to work on the ones that help you get in the black.
made a new kickstarter update regarding shipping and those who want to pay extra for priority shipping! - sorry about the delay ps. duties/tariffs might be quite low depending on where you live and are to be paid by the recipient on delivery. The shipping itself is a different fee. basically if you live in canada - no duties. If you live in the states, the carrier will charge you the duties when they deliver the item. If you live overseas, expect the carrier to reach out to you to have you pay the duties when the item reaches your country
Dude good luck on the project! You got this!
Another one ready tl pay shipping
made a new kickstarter update regarding shipping and those who want to pay extra for priority shipping! - sorry about the delay
Regarding the December vs. January shipping, I'd say wait to January if it will help financially. It's not uncommon to have to weight for a batch to be produced before being shipped with stuff like this.
Hey, just an aside on your website; it does indeed look better! But there is literally no way to contact you by email on there. Same deal for your RUclips profile. Yes, I was looking for a reason. But also, in general you probably want to be contactable, no?
I'd start trickling just to get units out which will help promote future sales. That said, don't sell anything to get this out there. Dude, if there's anything we backers can do, let us know. I'd be down to pay for shipping for my unit and also willing to help you network with other embedded devs (I'm one myself).

Hey, I’ll be happy to pay for shipping and maybe you could even put some kind of a tip jar. I’d kick in! Do NOT sell your bike. I’d like to think a lot of us backers would be happy to kick in.
Absolutely put up a donation link and I'll send you $50 immediately.

made a new kickstarter update regarding shipping and those who want to pay extra for priority shipping! - sorry about the delay
Do whatever is the easiest for your finances and I say that as someone who bought one of the very first few ones and got the best price possible. Also wonder if it's possible to try to mitigate the issue by essentially charging to get it earlier than other people and if you don't care to pay you're just gonna have to wait longer than other people who are willing to pay slightly more like say a $10 help you out or something. Assuming that would even help things.
I'd also be up for this. You've been honest and keep us all up to date.

@@midigoblin Hope your feeling better now, no need to be sorry, appreciate the update.
O man I want the midi goblin do they charge right away for preorder or when it ships and any list of devices already added for support?
Hi Andrew, great project! But I wonder how do you save a patch via midi from the Roland S-1? I don't know a way to get all the CC parameters out of the synth at once.
The s-1 doesnt have a dump all parameters command unfortunately so I just ended up going through every single parameter and tweeking them a bit. after the goblin got a reading on each parameter, I saved the patch. I called it template. Any time i start up the midi goblin and s-1 i just load the template patch and everything syncs up instantly. from there, any changes i make will be received by he goblin and any patch i save will be accurate. side note: i did this before i created the midi goblins midi controller app so tweeking every parameter on the s-1 was a huge pain in the butt to create the template patch. Now-a-days i would just use the midi goblin's built in controller app. its quite helpful since it lists every parameter that you define for the synth - so its makes getting at all those hidden parameters really easy.
Yamaha an1x do it too 😊
Fantastic! This really opens up the sonic and rhythmic possibilities of this already great-sounding synth. I'm looking forward to playing around with this.
I am looking forward to working with one of these.
Does the goblin send MIDI Program Change messages? Can it receive them? Can it display an instrument's active program (aka preset)?
yep, it can send program change messages here's a long winded video on the matter: ruclips.net/video/b2mmXqm7EgM/видео.html its fairly easy to do. Im tinkering with a way to create these program change files locally without having to create them on a computer, but its really, really easy to create the program change files (its literally one word and one or two numbers saved in a txt file and plopped in your synths patches folder) Goblin cannot display received program numbers ...yet...that sounds like it could be a fun thing to add to the monitor or something! As for displaying the current program - nah, cant to that either, though i think it would be possible to put the previously loaded patch/program change file name in the header of the patches program (top of the patches menu)
I have the Yamaha Reface demoed here, and the Midi Goblin looks like it would really enhance its capabilities. I am admittedly pretty ignorant when it comes to MIDI. Since this device has so many functions, will you be providing some kind of manual or tutorials?
the reface cs is probably my favorite synth! The cs takes full advantage of all the goblins features. the arpeggiator and ability to save and load patches (your slider and switch values) takes the cs from a good synth to an amazing synth. I am working on documentation and completely re-doing tutorial videos. its a long, labor intensive process but will be worth the effort. I fully intend to have this content ready before shipping the goblins (last thing i want is for someone to receive the goblin, not know how to use it and for it to collect dust)
Update: Midi goblin now has a built in midi controller. You can create patches for the volca entirely local through the controller app now. :D
What?! I missed this somewhere along the line.. man I am looking forward to this little box!
I don’t fully understand. Can it save patches for example Behringer Model D?
No worries. Its a subject many people are unfamiliar with. Long answer short - model D in specific: no....but many other synths: heck yeah. Many synthesizers can transmit or midi cc(control change) or nrpn midi messages when users change their parameter values. These messages tell external devices or apps what the value of each parameter is. Example: Move a LFO depth slider on a Yamaha reface CS and it will transmit a message containing a couple bits of info: The type of message (control change) the control change number (77) and its value (0-127). A collection of these values is typically called a patch. Midi goblin allows users to create a list of parameter names and numbers. From then on, when it receives a value for a parameter youve defined, it keeps track of it and lets you save it. You can then transmit these values back to your synth to control the parameters. Not ALL synths have this ability though. Some are fully analog(i beleive the model D is) or they just dont transmit midi cc or nrpn messages (the model d does not), so the positions of their knobs, switches and sliders directly controls the sound of the synth. But many are digially controlled analog now-a-days, so their parameter values can be controlled externally. Patch morphing simply looks at the current values of your synths parameters, looks at the values saved within a patch file, and as you turn the knob, it fires off all the in between values depending on what position your encoder is turned. Basically, turn a knob, itll change all the parameter values automatically. Hope that helps. Id suggest checking videos on midi cc, nrpn and sysex messages. Midi goblin can save midi cc and nrpn (but not sysex...that is quite difficult)
@@midigoblin Ah thanks! 😊 I owned a Electra One and it perhaps worked in a similar way.
@@P-S-T just checked the electra one out, looks like a rad midi controller! MIDI Goblin does indeed have a similar midi controller app built into it. Its not nearly as fancy as the electra but its quite useful for getting at parameters. Doesnt do sysex though..maybe some day!
Very interesting, I will order one.
🥲thanks!
Doing the good work!! Being able to play both is awesome. ESP for people that have keyboards with chord memory. Send a gob note, plays a device chord.
Hey that gives me an idea. I could theoretically be running notes from the arp or sequencer app into the chord generator app or arp-note app...Hmm
Ah I want one for my old akai digital synth but it only has one knob. Add 15 more!!
@@JS-vz4je watch the video on the nts-1 - you just need to plug a midi controller with lots of knobs or sliders into the midi goblin. Then the midi goblin into the akai and turn on goblins midi cc thru. You can use the controller to change the parameter values of the akai, and midi goblin can save the parameter values.... alternatively you can use the goblins built in midi controller orrr both at the same time. It's pretty dope.
@@midigoblin Thanks I checked it out. I need to program cc values for a couple synths that all have different cc values for their functions. Are the cc values customizable from the midi controller to the synth? Can they be saved into folders to recall them later with the midi goblin? For instance, If I want knob 1 on my midi controller to send cc value for the filter of the synth. Then knobs 2-5 to control ASDR of the synth? These might be different cc values on 2 different synths. Thanks!
when you add your synth to midi goblin, you list the synths parameter numbers and names. From then on when the midi goblin receives values that match your parameter numbers, it keeps track of them and allows you to save the values as patch files. the files are saved in folders specific to each synth you add. You can add dozens of synths to midi goblin and saves patches for any of them regardless of what their unique cc parameter numbers are - but you can only save patches for one synth at a time. So you cant hook multiple synths up to midi goblins input to save mega-multi-synth patches unfortunately. I havnt even advertised this yet but if you have hooked up midi goblin's output to multiple synths, and youve dragged patch files from multiple synths into your current synths folder - you can send patches to each individual synth, but right now you just need to change the midi channel to match the synth you want to send the patch to. Its fuckin sweet. As for using midi controllers: does the midi controller have the ability to change the midi cc values it transmits for each knob/slider? Many new controllers have this built in and it makes things easier. if the midi controller does not have this ability - good news! you can use the remap function to work around this. All you need to do is re-map the incoming cc of the controller to the parameters of your synth. from then you can use your controller to control the synth and save patches for them (you just need to make sure the re-map app is turned on when you save the patch and that youve initiated all the values by either moving all your sliders or loading a template patch file)
ps. you can also remap your synth's parameters to different cc values so you can create patches for one synth using another one. If you check out my video on remap, theres an example of using a yamaha reface cs to create patches for the volca keys (though i personally find just using the midi controller app easier now)
Cool device would love to try it
Can the midi Goblin also randomize midi CC parameters and if so in what manner can the depth of the randomization be controlled?
nah - although I did consider , the odds of randomly setting one parameter that effectively cancels out others is too high. (like randomly setting the depth and speed of and lfo to 50 and 64 but then the lfo to off or something) Sounds like a fun idea on paper, but in practice its more trouble than its worth...since midi goblin works with user defined synths, and there are a lot of different synths with different parameters, users would need to create rules for every single parameter for the randomizer to follow in order to prevent accidentally creating un-useable patches
on that note, if you morph from one patch with completely different settings than your current values/patch you just loaded you can get some pretty crazy, random ass results.
@@midigoblin good call, this is also the experience I have with randomising my Opsix. Most of the time, you just end up with clicks or atonal buzzes unless you go in and prune all the options being randomised down to just a handful.
would this work with nymphes?
going to test this out soon but based on the midi implementation chart - very very likely
@@midigoblin cool, ive been semi obsessed with your thing since yr redit post and ive been itching to get the nymphes. guess it does save patches tho?
@@ryanstevens3822apparently the nymphes has 49 user presets and 49 factory presets. Switching between them looks kind of like a pain in the butt though. thankfully it seems like it can respond to program change messages so midi goblin should be able to load them by simply dropping a .txt file into the synths patch folder on the goblin's sd card. Name the txt file the name of the patch and write "program[space][patchnumber]" in the text file....from then on, when you load that file from the patch menu on the goblin, the nymphes should load the patch. Basically its like adding a screen to the nymphes :) on top of that, being able to save patches externally on the midi goblin sd card should greatly increase the number of patches you can save (no official maximum patch count yet but hundreds of patches seems like its going to be the case...per synth)
Yes we tested it with my nymphes
Hmm I still wanna stress test this one a bit. We didnt have a chance to morph all of the nymphes parameter values - only a handful...which works! But the nymphes has a lot of parameters, yes midi goblin can morph them all no problem and transmit all the required messages but can the nymphes process all those messages quickly enough? We'll have to wait and see. The nymphes also doesnt have a midi output connection so creating patches that are saveable and morphable for the nymphes is a bit of a curveball but worth the effort... A follow up video about the nymphes is definitely needed... @DECIMA1 and i will have to do a synth exchange at some point.
I'm so excited to play with this on my Reface CS. That's probably around 75% of the reason I backed this project. Love this!
The cs is my favorite synth! I think midi goblins are gunna be must-haves for reface owners once the word gets out
I'd like to morph between two saved patch files, but this is already very cool.
you can! you just load a patch, then select the next patch to morph to and you're good to go!
You absolute madlad. Doing this SO close to the shipping date is one of the ballsiest things I've seen a dev do. I can't wait to get mine in. I wish I had the money at the time to get a second so I could convert one to Eurorack.
Okay, so we see what you'd look like anamorphic I to the goblin- but what about your cat???
I entirely love the style of your videos. Each one makes me happier to have supported you! (plus more excited to get my Goblin)
Awesome!
