Episode 6 - The Pondless Waterfall
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.6 месяцев назад
We spent 3 days in South Minneapolis renovating an existing fish pond and converting it into a serene 16-foot long pondless waterfall. Access was very tight, and we couldn't do anything with machines, so we utilized the larger boulders from the old pond and brought in a few new ones ourselves. Why did we convert this to a pondless waterfall? Well, to lower the maintenance for one thing. Secondl...

Episode 5 - Unforgettable Entrance

The Drawn by Nature team completely transformed this front yard garden and grass space into a beautiful outdoor living room. We had to approach the patio construction in a responsible manner, being there were a lot of roots from the Honeylocust tree at the corner of the house. Rather than chop all those roots out and diminish the health of the tree, we opted to you the Gator Base panels so our ...
Episode 4 - The Permeable Patio
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This newly constructed house had the bare minimum in terms of landscaping. The amount of impervious surface was at risk on this lot and the only way to have a backyard patio was to make it permeable. A great design, full of contrasting color and shapes, becomes the focal point of the backyard. Even the neighbor's said, "I have been enjoying watching you guys build that beautiful patio from my u...

Small Backyard Waterfall - Huge Impact
The work you did was great, however, it would look way better if you got rid of the hardscape circle at the bottom and the square at the top. They don't go with the natural theme you are advertising. I'm betting the homeowner wanted to keep those....too bad. It doesn't do your work justice.
Great job!!!
cutting the natural flagstone and replacing it with pavers was full retard.
Looks great! How much power is consumed by running the pump continuously?
Much appreciated! This pump is an aquasurge, which is an energy-=efficient pump and will cost around $15-25/month to operate. We usually have our pondless waterfalls shut off at midnight and turn on at 6am, so they're not running 24 hrs and consuming unnecessary power. Here in Minnesota, we only operate the waterfalls from April to November so ~6 months = $120 per year.
Nice job!
Great job & video , very well done 👍 ⚾️
Thanks for tuning in! Much appreciated.
Great job, fellas 👏 This was a nice upgrade for the homeowners, I'm sure. I must give you your props on the B-roll of the finished project! 🏆 Phenomenal shots and sound 👌 thank you for capturing it. We usually get 10/15 minutes of the build, followed by 30 seconds of the finished project. 🤬 so infuriating. Thanks for doing us right. Keep up the excellent work. 👍
Thank you very much Eric! We appreciate the comment and also the feedback, it's very helpful to know what our viewers want more of. We'll be sure to include as much b-roll as possible. Sometimes the camera is too shaky to appreciate the footage, but we've got some nice tripods now so expect more of this!
Does this count as 1 retaining wall over 4 foot or two retaining walls under 3 foot
Love the lid idea....1st time ive seen that love love love❤❤❤❤
Thank you! We are doing this more and more. Looks great for the water feature and is easier on the maintenance side. Win Win!
That is amazing !!! Wow looks so natural !
Thank you! Cheers!
Good job fellas
Thanks!
Great job ❤ how much the reservoir capacity in gallon and also for the water pump, thanks.
Thank you very much! The reservoir consists of 5 small aquablox (17 gallons of storage each) + the pump vault which gives us about 100 gallons of water storage. Our pump is an Aquasurge 4,000-8,000 gph pump with a 2" plumbing line. The 4-8k pump allows you to run it anywhere between 4,000 and 8,000 gph depending on what speed you set it to. Aquascape has a mobile app you can adjust everything with right from your phone.
@@DrawnbyNatureLandscaping thank you so much brother, is it okay if I use one bloxs 100 gallon , instead of 5 small,
I like your waterfall very very much, it's really beautiful
@@Isa-ld3zg Aquascape has a 100 gallon single unit called the aquabasin 45 - perfectly fine to use that instead of 5 aquablox.
@@DrawnbyNatureLandscaping appreciate your support, 16 feets lengh, what about spill way width, Thanks
I’m amazed at how you can turn nothing into something beautiful and functional.
Thank you! When you do this day in and day out it becomes second nature.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome work! Can this basin be drained in the fall to prepare it for freezing temperatures?
Thanks! It freezes here in MN, so it's routine to remove the pump in the fall. We actually want water to stay in the basin to freeze and turn into a block of ice to resist heaving. But yes, a pump can be dropped into the basin to pump out the water, which is what's involved as part of our spring cleaning. It's good to start each spring with fresh water.
Gorgeous! And so fun watching you work. So well choreographed and smooth. Nice work!
Thank you very much for the kind words! We've done this once or twice and have our system down pretty well 🙂
how is this patio permeable when you lay plastic then cement
It's fabric, not plastic. If you're referring to the pavers as cement, it's the wide joints between the bricks that allows water to permeate through it. Did you not watch the full video to see the water disappear?
What a shape! The work stilll looks too technical for me to try on my own, rather than just having you do the job.
Like anything, it's easy once you get the hang of it. Just requires a lot of labor and more tools than you'd think!
Amazing workmanship! 😊
Thank you! 😊
You guys are artists! Love your work.
Thank you very much!
That's dope. Good job.
Appreciate it!
That is so beautiful
Thank you very much
I love that
We do too. It was our favorite project in '23.
Я не убеждьон что они правилно кладят бетонние блоки и на следущий ред они надо обращают сверзку
Atleast theres stone, geogrid and a drain, its not likely going anywhere but we use glue to make sure.
What is the mesh for?
It's called geogrid, Stone goes on top of it to secure the wall better.
Bi-directional geogrid. On retaining walls higher than 3' tall we will install this between the layers of block. It reinforces the wall and the load of the soil/drainage rock behind it. It's basically just an added measure of overall strength.
It’s 2023, who tf is using dry stacked block for walls? Let alone something retaining related
And put a stair edge behind those blocks before you backfill them, those things are crooked as all hell
These blocks matched other retaining walls on the property.
Melhor que o vídeo, foi a 🎸 música !!
If you want it to hold , you have to do it right the first time.
Anything but natural, lol
Those steps aren't made of natural stone? Lol
Where are you in Minnesota? Do you do projects in Eden Prairie?
We are located in the south metro. Yes, we work in EP very often. Please visit our webpage and fill out the estimate form if you'd like to setup a time for an on-site consultation. www.dbnlandscaping.com
Love the flagstone patio!!!
Much appreciated!
if only you saw Southeast Asia waterfalls, you would be surprised.... stunned.... mesmerised.
I'll have to put that on my bucket list to visit! We're always looking for inspiration.
That's what I want; right there.
Best thing about stone, compared to other timbers or concrete materials, this will last forever!
How did you score the cut lines? Chisel? Grinder with cutting wheel?
It's all done with the chisel. Keep your initial chisel line straight and you should have success with a uniform break. The key is to chisel on both sides of the block before you try to break through.
Beautiful work
Thank you very much!!
That’s not a patio, it’s a work of art!
Thank you for your kind words!!
That's FINE and dandy, but us average people don't have freaking backhoes and diggers or heavy machinery. SO I may as well search for another video. Just assayin. And time lapse leaves NO room for tutorial instruction.
Not sure why you're all bent outa shape? It's just a video showing how we do things in Minnesota. There are plenty of videos out there to help you. If you have any specific questions just ask and I'll be happy to help you out.
What a lil' beaut! This sure spiked my winter waterfall cravings...
Are you traveling for any projects this winter?
I’m gonna try. Looking at a couple jobs in CA if the lodging comes through.
@@morganjacobs3276 Nice! Good luck!!
Would it make an even greater and better foundation if you molded a thin layer of concrete that makes a nice and flat surface under the fine ground gravel? and then just add 1-2" of fine gravel on the top, before putting the flagstones??
You can make a great foundation with concrete for your flagstone, yes. But you wouldn't lay any fine ground gravel. In that case you'd want to mortar the flagstone to the concrete slab. We live in Minnesota with a heavy freeze/thaw climate and concrete cracks easily. This is our preferred method for longevity and easy repair in the future.
@@DrawnbyNatureLandscaping I live in northeast Ohio and have heavy freeze / thaw cycles as well. We will be putting down some sort of slate / flagstone it’s 12x24 and ranges in thickness from 1/2” to 1”. We were recommended a base of 3/4” to fine and a bedding of sand topping mix (quikrete) laid dry and misted before putting down pavers . Would you recommend something different ? Please help . Thanks so much Edit: to add I have well draining sandy soil next to my house where it will be laid
@G T for flagstone or slate that is thin, yes you need to use some sort of mortaring method. I'd be in favor of pouring a 4" concrete slab and then adhering the stone to that. The problem with 3/4 minus is that it's going to shift and will break the bond with concrete.
@@shaymoose17 thanks for the reply . What would be the worse that could happen if I laid it like in the video with no fine. 3/4 base no fine , and then the 1/4 chip (hpb) and hand leveled each piece so that each paver was flush while maintaining grade of course
@G T you're probably ok with that. My only fear is how thin your stone is and it not seating into your bedding layer with enough force. The plus about using the spec you were given about laying it on a mortar bed is that it's more solid and will bond the surrounding pieces.
Looks so good!
Thank you very much!!
4:13 one tip, when laying pavers in a random pattern, don't have 4 corners meet up, creates a point of weakness. I personally also try to avoid putting 2 small blocks side by side.
We understand that rule and try to stick to it when it makes sense. Even the manufacturer's recommended patterns have tons of patterns with 4 corners. Plus, with poly sand, edging restraint, and 8" base installation this patio isn't shifting. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@DrawnbyNatureLandscaping yes, some patterns have 4 corners in them, im talking about random pattern which is what you laid. Also, every pattern will be better than another with one being the best and most solid. Just food for thought, besides that, nice work ;)
Wow. Clean work. I really like it.
Thanks for the kind words Chad!
What was the estimated cost 💲? Thanks
I recall it being around 15k.
@@DrawnbyNatureLandscaping thank you for the reply. Looks great & very professionally done!!

Thanks Nick! In hindsight, a square fire pit would've been much easier!
That would've just been square, though! It looks so good the way you did it 😁

to bad you didn't extend the waterfall till the middle of the aquablox system, but never the less it's beautifull :)
