Truly it’s the learned expectations of relative normalcy that bring the danger here. You could be the greatest driver ever, the best eye, a copilot watching as well, and even all the electronic aids conceivable. But the difference in perception while driving or while seeing another person driving at speeds two to three times the standard traffic rate leaves the chances of accidents very high indeed. And to be blunt, were it not for the speed of this driver, the other people would be at fault in some cases. For example, you’re cruising down your local high traffic boulevard that you drive every day,let’s say at the 45mph posted limit. Then some dude pulls out kind of front of you but then accelerates such that you would never have hit them after all. Those are not so common, but that would be me, not to even scare someone into slowing down, but use body language to say, “I’m pulling into traffic but with authority and you don’t need to worry about me”. Next one is the dude pulls out a leisurely accelerates and you have to slow way down. Normal but not cool. If traffic doesn’t yield to your speed at the listed limit, they have some fault, but if you run into them from behind, it’s gonna be a stretch to find them at fault. The law says you are responsible for avoiding those in front of you, except for relatively extreme circumstances. But if you are doing say 60mph in that. 45mph zone, and someone pulls out forcing you to slam on the breaks, you’ve got to remember that they are anticipating you going the speed of most others, and their perception of your speed will be graded to discern the more on-axis you are to them. Know that a vehicle coming at you dead on axis will not give you the observational information to discern to speed as well as a car going across your viewpoint. The frontal area getting bigger and bigger really quickly is really the only tell. In other words, take into account that others can’t anticipate and adjust for your speed as well as you might think. Yes, they should be able to tell if someone is going like 30mph instead of 45, and take that opportunity to pull out, but it’s not their job to figure out you are doing 70 in a 45 and to not pull out. When we, and I mean myself just like this guy, drive aggressively, own that shit. Anticipate. Don’t blame other drivers when things get hairy, almost no matter what. I’ve had some shit happen. Once when pulling my utility trailer behind my Suburban, a total of about 9,000lbs of steel, at 45mph on my local boulevard, some older guy pulled out of a church parking lot maybe 150 feet in front of me. There was traffic on my left flank so no lane switch possible. I thought I might shorten his car. Nope. I stayed in that pedal instead of pumping like we did before ABS and that mofo slowed enough to avoid that old guy. If you’re too old to fuck, you’re too old to drive. Kinda. Except my parents. If they still fool around, heaven help us, but both are still better drivers than most other people out there. My mother is like a race car driver by instinct, not training. But she clips apexes and positions her car exactly where it’s needed and it blows my mind to this day. Her father though, raced cars waaaaay back on those wooden banked oval tracks, and he was widely respected. I doubt he ever took her out and gave her pointers on dive bombing an outside to inside pass, but somehow, she got it. Its feel and instinct and a woman’s intuition. She has that sixth sense like none I’ve ever witnessed. Several times she saved a persons life by directing my brothers and I to go assist and/or prevent before the thing even happened. My dad is a genius engineer Army Colonel. And one hell of a driver. Ask me about the race in about 1987 from Charleston, SC, home, to Orlando, to see a Clemson bowl game, and after retiring and coming home from Saudi Arabia , they rewarded themselves with two nice cars, because they bust ass. Both 1985, both ordered in showrooms in Frankfurt, the Audi 5000S, 5- speed, and her Mercedes 300D turbo diesel. Mom thought he had turned off the main drag south, and followed, as there were maybe three Audi 5000s in town at the time, and none were coffee brown, so she followed. Meanwhile my dad had just fueled up, figured she should be passing about then, and gave chase. He couldn’t catch her because she was behind, but we didn’t know. Passing a Porsche 911 on a long two-lane causeway at about 95mph on 17 South was a sight. Dude’s jaw was in his lap. I had the best seat as co-pilot. We pulled over just into Jacksonville to call around and see if anyone had heard from her. Before cell phones. She was behind us in Brunswick. Dad let her have a sporting chance, and we pulled back onto 95 South when we saw her coming. From there to Orlando was a riot! Like the Gumball movie but sub -200HP cars with great drivers and spousal pride the trophy. She won. Barely. Her copilot was probably drunk, just to not freak out, so I don’t know who was helping her, but our back seat passenger was her copilots husband, and he was sloshed by the time we had passed the 911. WOT as cruise control is the way to go until we've got like 300-400hp where triple digits are seconds away. My Magnum RT still pulls hard as hell from 90-120 almost BETTER than 60-90. thats not true. it pulls hard the whole way. its the area unnder the curve that you want on the street. High strung engines good for only 4000-6000 have top end and launch at the drags with high stall or clutch, but in the street, i stay fender to fender till 50-60 with cars that run in the low 13s, where an RT is gonna be mid 14s. i once got the thumbs up from a C5 Vette pulling from a rural 4 lane light to about 80, where he didnt pull away till about 65. At the next light he put his window down and told me he was shocked that I hung in so long. Then I pojnted out the couple hundred pounds of PA gear in the back, and he even said, "well, i cant carry all of that, and thats why ive got a Silverado". i told him, "I've got a Suburban too, but is it fun or easy to get a big truck sideways?". he said, "I get it", and i said, "this car pulls my trailer better than the Burban, and can carry half as much, so its inly fir wbere this cant do it, meaning Home Depot runs can still be fun". he laughed and i left a nice ling 11 from the light. he blasted by me as i turned into Tractor Supply. i wqlked into that place like i had just gotten a. great BJ. epic stuff. its in the blood. my dad has only been in one accident that was his fault in hjs life, and only one other besides that, getting rear ended while stopped. mom has onlyhad one wher she got blamed but it wasnt her fault. dude hydroplaned in front of her on the interstate and bounced off the jersey barrier and she hit him. whoops. The jersey barrier slowed his BMW down faster than ABS would allow in the pouring rain. i call that a clean record at 84 years old! dad got his first traffic violation at 72 years old, 42 in a 35. what cop does that? mom has never had a traffic ticket. She has a way with words. Woe to the store or restaurant manager who crosses her. Ground beef is NOW on the menu.
