Winecap (stropharia) mushrooms on compost windrows: Heavy deer browsing!
A huge flush of winecaps on our windrows--the largest ever--eventually attracted deer (after we harvested copious amounts) who nibbled on the emerging mushrooms. A lesson to harvest early! More will come. 'You learn and you adapt'...especially when sharing habitat with many family members...Just trying to 'keep it honest' here on the farm!

Bumble Bees in Siberian Peashrub
Просмотров 495 месяцев назад
Siberian peashrub (caragana arborescens) attracts massive numbers of pollinators, especially ground-dwelling bumble bees who thrive here at SHO (partially due to the fact that we don't mow except for pathways). Pollinator habitat not only benefits the other plants on our farm, it assures a good Siberian pea harvest, as we use this perennial legume in place of soybeans for making misos and amino...

This shows how 'not mowing' within a once-pastured Vermont hill farm has yielded a flush of ostrich ferns (fiddleheads a wonderful spring vegetable), and also created ideal conditions for planting long-term mast trees like oak, chestnut, nut pine, hickory and even fruit trees like pear, apple, and mulberry. When, with time, ferns overtake a once-grassy field, this removes the difficulty of esta...

The Evolution of Sanctuary Compost at SHO: Ecology of Mutualism

Vegan farms and sanctuaries are most always challenged with how to manage the copious bedding from our non-human animal living spaces. Here at SHO, we are a farm, duck sanctuary, and wildlife refuge, and are learning how to treat our bedding as an ecosystem in itself, as it slowly returns to the land. We're exploring mutualisms, passive harvests, and active cultivation to benefit both the anima...

    I’m planting wild rice, wild millet, smartweed, dwarf corn and Japanese millet for wildlife. I started them in a greenhouse and all are have sprouted and growing except the rice. I have tried planting the rice several different ways including indoor trays, greenhouse trays, broadcast over water and broadcast over wet ground but nothing has sprouted yet after two weeks. Ground temp is 50. Still hoping.

    Great video, always love to see your plantings! I have enjoyed observing all that the birds plant whenever tree canopy or perches are above; in those parts of my garden there is an abundant forest regenerating (serviceberries, autumn olive, wild cherries, wild apples, invasive pears, brambles, grapes, red cedars, along with my least-favorite of Poison Ivy, as well as some wind-blown seeds). In areas of grassland the process of succession has been much, much slower. What you're calling Serviceberries here look like a wild cherry species to me, possibly P. serotina, though there are many species of serviceberries out there, and it could be one I haven't seen before. I have been learning more about the wild grapes around here; fox grapes have fuzzy undersides to the leaves and large, sweet fruit (Concords were bred from those), but we also have Riverbank grapes (large, thin, edible heart-shaped to squarish leaves, small, tart fruits) and "Summer" grapes (often very incised leaves, as found on some figs), Vitis aestivalis. I was wondering why some vines flowered but never fruited, and found out that grapes are another dioecious species, like Persimmons or Mulberries. Always learning!

      @shofarmvt 2 года назад

      Thank you PJ! It's possible that a few of the younger shrubs that I took to be serviceberry (I did see one of them fruit last year) could be prunus, pin cherry (. Those will come out, if so. We have good pin cherry shrubs along our driveway that make really nice fruit clusters.

    This might be the best example of modern rural gentrification around Vermont right now. The thinking is great... in fact its nothing new, this is how farmers thought and organized themselves one hundred plus years ago, taking micro climate and planting and building sites all into account. The only difference is now it costs a lot more to do it, is not really a community effort and benefits much fewer people. It's a re-branding of very old ideas by privileged white land-owners. I ask how these systems can be afforded to an average income Vermonter. As someone who has seen the land be transformed negatively over the last 40 years in VT I have to say I am skeptical that this place will provide anything but warm pats on the back of rich new york/connecticut/new jersey/massachusetts urbanites. 80k in earthworks! I am instantly priced out!

    • @shofarmvt
      @shofarmvt 9 лет назад

      bjorn, our place has flaws to be sure, but we need people of all financial backgrounds to invest in these kinds of systems in order to achieve a large impact. the goal is to attract sophisticated investors to a credible design and execution, in order to build confidence in the values of both permaculture and ecosystem stewardship. Each element can be educational to any financial means, and all monies spent on this project went into supporting local craftspeople and those attempting to earn an ethical living. It is key that elements here becomes 'the norm' insofar as the way buildings and resources are scrupulously used. I would invite you to track what we're doing to stimulate new markets for permaculture-grown products, to revise State laws in order to recognize regenerative agroforestry land management in both current use and conservation, and to inspire investors to partner with permaculture entrepreneurs in shaping a new economy that builds health and life. You can check us out on facebook at "Teal-Sho Farm Vermont", or on earthasset.com.

      @anthonyanderson9326 9 лет назад

      Permaculture has something for everyone. This site is in the upper echelon of projects, but why hate on that? The mentality that bjorn is coming from will exclude those that can really make big changes with their resources. I really do hope that more and more people from the wealthy urbanite background will develop passions for food forests and regenerative farming..we will be a good place when that shifts. We are all in this together, and for $200 one can plant a nice backyard full of edible tree species. The synergy is where paradise creation is found, and permaculture dissolves class lines. Paradise creation for all...and by all.

    • @shofarmvt
      @shofarmvt 9 лет назад

      bjorn deluz Of course no one needs permission of the wealthy to live better. . But the weatlhy need to have confidence in solid permaculture practices in order to place resources in well though-out, and productive systems that will hold their value over time. Building bridges is the way to go. I am always surprised when folks criticize the farm here because it involved money, beautiful craftsmanship, and large scale. That attitude needs to be broken down in order to attract everyone into the practice. You don't need money to project an attitude of generosity, affirmation, and sense of non-separation. As Anthony so aptly said, 'we're all in this together'.

      @stevengubkin7197 9 лет назад

      bjorn deluz While I agree that an 80K design is probably beyond what most of us are capable of spending, most people making middle class wages can afford a similar kind of project. I am personally employing a "Mr. Money Mushtashe" approach of living on about 15K a year, and "investing" the rest into my permaculture homestead.

    • @shofarmvt

      Jeremy Martin Yes. Re blossoms: we have not observed any seaberries get frost-killed, simple because the harvests are so plentiful. We also have lots of buffalo berries, but don't pay attention to that plant so much given that we're not using the fruit for human consumption--just nitrogen fixation and bird food.

    A tough question to answer since the permaculture installation was part of a larger project involving a lot of earthworks. Ben Falk's/Whole Systems Design master plan for the project alone cost $80k, which involved a much larger installation plan over a larger acreage.
