Lakelander Gravel Grinder - One of the best (and only?) gravel events in Ireland in 2024!
Come along with me in this video as I take on the 2024 edition of Lakelander Gravel Grinder. This is one of the best gravel events in Ireland, and this year is has been one of the only gravel events to run on the island of Ireland. In Northern Ireland we generally have pretty good access to our forest parks, and events are allow to run in them, but in the Republic of Ireland, a lot of the best gravel roads on in forests managed by Coillte, who are preventing access for cyclists... make sure you watch to the end to find out why.

Is this Northern Ireland's Best Charity Sportive? 2023 Fun Run Of the Glens
As an AeroPack owner for a few years now, one tip is to take a spare strap and use it to join the two stacking straps together at the top of the bag. As you've probably discovered, you can use the stacking straps to attach further items to the outside of the AeroPack. In France earlier this year, I had used the rear stacking strap to hold my spare shoes. Somehow, the strap slipped off the rear of the bag and the shoes jammed in the wheel. Fortunately, I was walking the bike at the time but I hate to think what would have happened if I'd been descending at speed. Most bikepackers have a spare strap or two with them anyway, as it's a really useful item to have with you.
Yea I need to get a few more straps for sure, do you have any specific recommendations? Or do you stick to the Tailfin ones?
@@connormcc A strap is pretty much a strap. I use a Tailfin hypalon one as, if you own a Tailfin frame bag or top tube bag, you've probably got a spare one knocking about.
@@jonmathias6159 Yea I have a couple of spare Tailfin ones, was just curious if there were any others on Amazon or anything that you've used or recommend...
I'm not surprised that you found the 10L mini panniers too small for a full camping set-up. I also bought the 10L because that was the biggest mini pannier available at the time. Even though I have a lightweight camping set-up (700g Vango F10 Hydrogen tent, Exped sleeping pad and 300g PhD sleeping bag) the 10L panniers were just a bit too small. I'd say that they're ideal for credit card touring, when you're only carrying spare clothes and toiletries. I have since bought the 16L mini panniers and they are ideal. That extra 12 L of capacity makes all the difference. Re packing techniques, I group my gear into "rooms" and put the items for that "room" in the same bag. So the tent is my house, my sleep system is the bedroom, spare clothes the wardrobe, cooking kit the kitchen etc. This makes it easier to find stuff and also keeps items that you don't want to mix separate from each other (you wouldn't want the oil in your kitchen to be in the same bag as your sleeping bag, for instance).
Yea I have since upgraded to the 16 l pannier on one side ( because it can accommodate a laptop for commuting). I did a credit card bikepacking trip on my road bike this year, and because I had less stuff it was fine. I do like the 'rooms' idea - I do something similar, but actually, you've articulated very well a good way to pack!
Hi! Is there a difference between the 2022 vs the 2023 version? The specs seem the same
I’m honestly not sure, I haven’t really compared the models
Thanks for the Tips. My suggestion, please come to Portugal-Algarve, when possible, we have 300 days of sun 🌞😎 ps: bring the bike!
That sounds amazing!
Hi, weres the mountain roads your on ? It's beautiful, please any information 🙏
The main rides I did were Sa Calobra, and Cap de Formentor… I’ve a few other Mallorca videos on the channel you can check out for more detail
nice video - I've done the big dog twice. Have to take a year off between as it's just too much to think about for me 12 months later. Very difficult which is a real test of your nerve and fitness. Subscribed
Yea it’s tough for sure, I’m looking forward to next year already, I’m actually tempted to do the wee dog, that way I’ll have done all 3
Thanks for the sub 👍🏻
@@connormcc ah if you travel that far to a thing, you may as well do the full distance.
Yea you’re probably right 😂
clean your glasses lol
I've done the big dog 3 times , it's as you said, beautiful and brutal
ha ha, yea, it was impossible to keep them clean was the problem 😂
Great video Connor. How on earth could you see through those mud caked lenses?😎😮
Ha ha, yea I had to keep wiping them - one of the guys kept calling me Zorro because it looked like I was wearing a mask - glad you enjoyed the video!
Stumbled across your channel and really enjoying your vids and content. You give a good balance of cycling footage and commentary which keeps things interesting, keep up the great work and adventures.
Thank for the comment and for watching! I’m glad you enjoy the videos! I’ve got a few bikepacking ones on here, if that is what you are interested in, and I have a few more coming soon, so make sure to subscribe 😁 I cover lots of cycling related things here, but generally try to keep it positive and light hearted! I hope you stick around and enjoy!
Great video, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gave it a go after your video last year, got an 11th place on the big dog on the XC full suspension. Can’t say I enjoyed the scenery, was in the red the whole event haha
11th place on big dog 😲 that’s impressive! No wonder you were in the red! I was nearly last 😂 but I was basically the last person to roll out and stopped for too long at the feed stops
@connormcc I guarantee you enjoyed it more than me hahahaha, great day out. hope next year is a little drier.
@Frankthegravelrider yea I don’t think I’ve ever been muddier 😂
@connormcc would you run a xc hardtail next time? I'm convinced they're faster than Gravel bikes.
@Frankthegravelrider not sure, I do have a hard tail, but not convinced I’d find it comfortable over 100km
I'm just found your channel. Just subscribed. Hello from cork 🇮🇪
Thanks for subscribing!
Great video again Connor. I was meant to do Lakeland grinder this year but took I’ll a few weeks out from it and couldn’t train. But fingers crossed for next year 🤞🏻well done 👍🏻
Hopefully you get back to fitness again soon, definitely aim for next year!
Hey. Great video. I done the 60km this year. Last year’s event was so much easier. Conditions were so tough (me being overweight was one of the conditions 😂). Roll on next year
Yea I agree, I think the headwind on the way back was a killer for sure… well done on doing it 💪🏻
Great video Connor, did the 100kms myself and my first time, will definitely be back!
I hope to be back next year too!
Nice video. Did the little dog this time and was fun to do gravel grinder again.
well done! This was my first year doing the big dog, tough day out
Great video Connor. Interesting angles from the Insta360. I was there as well, my 5th big dog. This year was the muddiest. Always a hard day out but I would never miss it. I stayed in the campsite too, I was in the red VW van.
yea the insta360 is great, surprised that the lenses weren’t muddier that they were 😂
You made it look easy. It's the toughest 100km I've ever done. Why does it all look flat 😂
ha ha, yea anything but easy, camera doesn’t capture the gradient 😂
Was there many hardtails at it?
All the gravel bikes are hardtail 😂 probably 10% mountain bike hardtails
there was a really mix of bikes, mostly gravel bikes, but some hard tails too, I think I spotted a couple of full sus, and an emtb too
@@connormcc Yeah I did the Big dog on my full suss xc bike. Was actually grand. Was chatting to you at the first food stop. Enjoy your channel, keep it up!
I imagine the big gearing made the climbs ever so slightly less horrendous 😂 Glad you enjoy the channel!
Always great to see London. Especially by Brompton.
I’m going to be over again in a couple of weeks, and weather dependant I hope to do a test ride on the new Brompton G Line 🤞🏻
@@connormcc Make sure you film that one. It'll be a good vlog! I'll follow suit then. 😆 Safe riding.
Yes I do plan to!
Brompton has the new G line with 20" wheels but there are lots of cheaper alternatives. In any case with a 30 mile commute i would look into an ebike.
Yea I really like the look of the G Line - I might try to test ride one net time I'm in London... It is a lot of money for sure, and I don't know that I'd get the use from it too much - still, I think it looks amazing :)
@@connormcc an inexpensive folder that i use has a bromptonlike carrier block . It is called Zizzo and costs about $500. I love it as well as my brompton.
@@billhemingway5558 Looks like a very affordable alternative!
What an amazing day for it . Great advertisement for cycling . Well done Conor .
Glad you enjoyed! I love sharing my cycling experiences in the hope that it inspires others to give it a go 😊
Are you still riding c Vel wheels?
Yea I am - and they are still great!
Loved this. I was browsing YB. I knew there were cycling lanes in London but this was amazing. Looks scary.
glad you enjoyed the video! I was really impressed with the cycling infrastructure in London, it’s no Amsterdam, but it’s much better than anything in Northern Ireland! It was only a little scary 😂
Kerry is about the nicest place there is. I love it. Got to run the Kerry Way Ultra last year but would love to take my bike down some time.
Yea it was really great on the bike… you definitely should get down there for a spin 👍🏻
Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks
Thank You!
Love your vlogs, well done . It gets me out on the bike . Thanks
Glad you are enjoying the videos, and glad to hear it’s encouraging you to get on the bike!
What is the red jersey ?
The Red/Orange jersey I’m wearing in the first part of the video is one of Victory Chimp signature jerseys… you can use my link to get 10% off your first order… tinyurl.com/3r9nsepy
Did the ring of Kerry event a couple of times but to be honest and I know I'm biased since I come from the area but the Inishowen 100 is on a different level both in scenery ways and also just the savageness of it with near 9000ft of elevation gain and 106 miles in distance. Nothing comes close .
Yea Kerry was really beautiful, I really loved it. It’s a shame that I haven’t done Inishowen 100 yet, especially as I live up north… but it just seems to intimidating 😂 - maybe next year 😁
Thanks for a great video a brilliant advert for cycling, and for kerry,Im so disappointed i missed it,as iv cycled ring of kerry many times and its a part of world you love going back too.👍👍
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Sorry that you didn’t make it to the event. I really enjoyed cycling in Kerry, and will definitely try to visit it again sometime!

Thanks, it is a 2020 Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8.9 Di2 Disc.... I do have a couple videos on here specifically about it
@15:47 it was tough alright the you round the corner and see an even steeper wall!

Don't mention capitals, other parts of Ireland and constantly remind them how great Cork is to stay on side.
I’ll bear that in mind 😁
Great Video of a Fantastic Event, , Did it as well and had a great Day , Well Done 👍😊
Well done to you too! I’m looking forward to next year already!
Patrick where do you find these events is this been run again next year?
I hope it is! I do think they intend to. I usually find out about event from social media, word of mouth etc
@@connormcc Cheers Conor I cycle nearly every day up to 30kms most ive done is 70kms in the one trip but looking to start doinf a few of these types of events now. Just on a cube attain 105 mechanical but hoping to upgrade next summer ill have to pick your brains when I do every shop has there say but all give different advice looking to spend about €5000.
One of the best things you can do is a speak to a local bike shop, get a bit of a preliminary bike fit on a few bikes etc, see which you like best, and what suits the type of riding you plan to do
Rode the event too, I saw you on it but you were just too fast.... Well done
Rarely if ever have I been described as too fast 😂 - well done to you too!

Thinking of buying one for Londonderry... wonder if it'll be more or less scary
I guess it depends on your route... they have just announced the new G-Line this morning which looks really cool!
Really appreciative seeing content on this event as a new gravel rider. Good music, except for that rock track XD sorry and I'm a metal fan. The chill and sporty music is really nice in your videos. Look forward to seeing your video of 2024's event, which im attending thanks to seeing this.
hopefully see you at gravel grinder this year!

Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video! Well done on completing the Bealach again yourself! it’s a great climb!
connor, just curious do you really need all that extra bags(weight) for the spin?
no definitely not, but because I was filming for RUclips I needed to carry a couple of cameras, drone etc…
@@connormcc understood, thinking of 100km in a few weeks ,less is more- fueling is key and pacing, like all tough things ,LOL.nice video!
Yea, I would say take more nutrition than you expect, and keep eating and drinking, you want to consume about 1g per hour per kg of body weight - or at least that’s what I aim to consume - and make sure to take on fluids and electrolytes too!
I find the torq system really good for planning nutrition… and (shameless plus for my affiliate link here), if you use this link and the code AFCONNOR10 you will get 10% off 😁 tinyurl.com/torq-connormcc
Also, tiny squirty bottle of chain lube.
A bottle of rosé! 😁
I mean, I do also often take a hip flask of whisky and/or a beer 😂
Amazing scenery. Would love to do that route, but the midges problem means that it's never going to happen. They would drive me nuts. It's the only thing that prevents me from experiencing Scotland further up. The Borders is as far as I get. Keep the videos coming Connor.👍
If you go in May or September you might get lucky with the midges, and take a good midge net/mask with you. I was staying in hostels, hotels, bnbs etc on this trip, so had somewhere to take refuge at least… glad you are enjoying the videos!
Worth noting that the latest gen iPhones also have satellite messaging built in for when there’s no phone signal; no additional monthly contract either (InReach’s battery life is much longer for any really long isolated periods though).. Really interesting route too :) 🙏🏽
@@petebw yea I saw that recently, but my phone is older so even buying an inreach and monthly sub is cheaper, and also as you say the battery life on inreach is much better, I still think there is a place for them for sure
@@connormcc coincidentally, I just had this video suggested to me by yt.. ruclips.net/video/fkBdII0Ideg/видео.html fair to say the emergency use is perhaps on par, but there is no tracking features with the handsets..
@@petebw I'll give it a watch, I think the new features of phones will have an impact for the casual user, but not make the like of the InReach totally obsolete
is it worth buying this model. bicycle of this model, second hand .year 2020, well preserved, for sale for 320 euros
That is a good price I reckon, maybe ask if you can get a test ride on it, and maybe get a local bike mechanic to give it a once over before you buy it. It's a pretty good bike for gentle trails - I wouldn't do anything too technical on it though
