When you realize that you have placed these hurdles before you, that you have empowered the people around you to say whether or not you are 'enlightened,' then you will have 'enlightened' yourself.
They are following Rinzai zen(linji school of chan) in japan. The zen buddhism now are still exist in china, vietnam, korea, japan and others. You could see the zen activities practice in a lot of temple in those country.
I don't think asceticism this extreme is in line of the Buddha's teachings on the Middle Way. I appreciate aspects of Zen Buddhism, including discipline and routine, but this practice goes too far.
I watched all four parts. It says almost same things as the modern Japanese textbooks, full of glorifying the revolution. Although some information on human cost is given (Mitsibushi workers living worse than stray dogs etc) it still extenuates the suffering of the period. Natsume Soseki was not only writing with the longing to the past - he was also writing against the ugliness of the period. In a very short time entire population - including samurai transformed. Their world derailed, millions couldn't keep up and just perished. Peasants - more than 90% of the entire population of that time - first faced heavy tax burdens, then forced to become industrial labour for daily food. Modern Japan is built on the dead bodies of millions of peasants. And if you add murders in Korea, China and South-East Asia, it becomes a splendid example of 19th century imperial power. A world build on exploitation. I don't mean prsent day is worse than the feudal era, but destroying the feudal era came with inhumane cost.
Life is a battle, progress has a price and stagnation is even more expensive! Thus, the future belongs to the people who stay ahead, remain open minded, ingenious, thrifty, and are open to change. We must absolutely embrace " change", that is the market economy or we shall for ever remain the laughing stock of the world!
I'd like to thank all those who helped Asia get rid of western parasites. Many people will say some of them were monsters and perhaps they are right. But many of those people fail to hold equal judgement for the killers of millions of native Americans, Algerians, Indians, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. who were murdered or died to hunger/disease/exhaustion as a consequence of the imperialistic urges of Great Britain,France,US,etc. "Look, they are still in the Middle Ages, they'll be our new pets!"
Of course is it. But you can t understand what for example the ethiopian empire symbolizes. all of the orthodox christian kingdoms in the middle east, north- and eastafrica didnt survived the islamic storm, ethiopia is the only nation to resist the muslim invasions for more than 1000 years, alone and isolated from all his allies! our kingdom gave us the stability to live like we wanted and want and therefore you should understand that its not foolishness when you see it from this perspective :)
guns weren't particularly powerful when they were first invented, which is why swords continued to be used for centuries. It wasn't until the 19th century that you didn't need to reload between every round, that guns didn't backfire almost all the time, that range was greater than with bows, that you could aim accurately, that smoke from gunpowder didn't get in your eyes, etc. Guns weren't that much more powerful than swords for most of history.
This documentary has no sense of scale. Japan is an incredibly prosperous nation but power hasn't "shifted from west to east," it's found in America and Europe as well as Japan and other Asian nations like S Korea, China and even India. For most of history, Europe was dwarfed by Asian empires. For a brief window of a couple of centuries, the west overtook it in power. This isn't the "traditional" western influence being lost, it's the eastern power returning though the west is still powered.

The journey of a people who are profound in culture, strongly embedded through historical struggle. I Love it!
Well written documentary with good balance of facts and prose
So the Last Samurai was Saigo Takamori and not Tom Cruise?!?! Blasphemy!
You mean Katsumoto. Cruise's character probably is based on Jules Brunet.

большое спасибо интересно
who's the narrator??
+subarashiiyo17 sounds like it's Peter Coyoto, the guy who headlines recent Ken Burns' docs

My mistake. That is what I meant by "hit," implying aggression.

It's a shame that this modern nation sounds like it was built using forced labor =/
Democracy leads to development, not the other way around
Atomic tests like Trinity involved detonating atomic bombs. it's the only nation to be hit by an atomic bomb in aggression*

Being proud of any empire is foolishness.
