I wanted to know if a power drill could be used to drive a primitive hurdy gurdy wheel. Yes, it could. Details: ruclips.net/video/OsY5Jr-R-4A/видео.html Notes: just the wheel worked - but winding the wheel with string (and glue it on) made it a lot better. I then recorded 4 drone notes onto the lofi sampler - and improvised some on top.

DIY cello (sampled), improvised pianos, sampled whistling, all into the Nagra III add-on-head tape echo adapter. Took forever to find a tape that would not stick in the hot evening. Finally I found a really old scotch tape that was very smooth. All "studio grade" tapes stuck badly, Cheap old consumer tape worked better.

Improvements! • Tape tension arm! Adjusting the tape tension is crucial, and having an arm with a large wingnut helps a lot. Highly recommended for all tape looping experiments. • Running the TA7668 from batteries made it a lot quieter. • Added stereo-mono and ground lift switches the to right extra head. • Even though the Nagra records all over the tape, tape height / azimuth can always be bet...

Sounds like an old WWII bomber flying over .
I don't know if this would work but have you tried putting one of those tiny round magnets on the spinning part?
@@GraemeWolfendale - I’m about to try. Tested my CV to PSU driver today, magnets = stronger effect on the Humbucker/Strings = even slow spins might produce percussive sounds… 🙏 The motor can be controlled by CV.. I’ll post soon…
this would sound wild at 60hz
Very awesome soundscape and performance. I want to try and recreate that drum pattern on my modular setup.

Happy New Year!! 🥳
Happy new year!!🎉
Hey mate this thing looks great. I was thinking of building one myself but I'm a bit of a newb so I'm a little bit unclear of what kind of line transformer you'd be using and how you'd set up that variable feedback control. Any tips? Thanks :)
thank you! You could use almost any inexpensive ground loop noise isolator, simple transformer for audio use. the feedback loop is just one potentiometer regulating the amount of sound back. standard hook up can be a 100k ohm poteniometer. Perhaps this will provide more info? www.build-electronic-circuits.com/potentiometer/
Awesome.🖤
Deep sound! 👍
Stunning!😮 I'll have a circuit bended Speak&Spell video out tomorrow and this is such a fun instrument!

@@tristanandsb2592 - good enough for my (mainly) noise-music… ;) But, compared to my kid sisters real electric cello, ordinary bass/guitar tune mechanics (as I use) was a lot easier…

What is the extra head you are using?

@@niklashild3962 much thanks! 🙏
Love it. Sounds great and the explanation is really helpful for understanding how this works.
@@adehanft thank you very much! 🙏
Give me a 10hr loop of this to sleep to pls 🙏
Very nice. Sounds amazing. That arm and sewing machine bobbins seem weirdly familiar to me for some reason ;-)
@@SISKworks hahaha! yes thank YOU for inspiring work! 🙏🙌 the arm solved the problem with getting the perfect tension for an even loop and getting it to stay there. I first bought bobbins trying to wind coils for a DIY ebow, ruclips.net/user/shortsSa1TaJXJCz0 (I made some detection coils and wound them in shrink tube, had bobbins left... )
So there’s a possibility of adding a couple of play heads as well and get them to mix at different levels? Also the board you used does it only have the 7668 chip or the output from that 7668 run into some other chip like a BBE chip since I’m trying to find this board on eBay and there are variants with just the 7668 board and others that have two chips including the 7668….BTW thanks for your advice on the other video to come and check this one out this is really a great non invasive way of creating a tape echo without really breaking anything on your reel to reel!!
This can be done with a reel to reel as well? I have an akai X4 which has three heads but no separate record/play head instead the third head is a cross field head, any suggestions on how to modify that?
@@JK-gw6mz - certainly! I made an adapter to my reel to reel like this ruclips.net/video/H6U1WrRshNg/видео.htmlsi=Ou2CxYAtSb4amgSZ
Very cool. Where did the tape head amplifier come from? Wondering the difference between that and a normal amplifier.
Thank you! Tape heads produce quite a weak signal. While it certainly CAN be amplified by a decent microphone amplifier, even a simpler dedicated tape head amplifier works better. If you want to use just an opamp that works fine, I tried with the recovery circuitry for my spring reverb and that sort of amplification did OK too. Still, for this I used a Ta7668 Tape Drive Preamplifier Amplifier Tape board. They are all over the Internet.
@@jacobsteel Thanks! I've done something similar with a $2 LM386 chip amp. But not knowing what I am doing, I wasn't sure whether there is something more needed to boost tape head signal beyond just making it louder. I've only experimented with cassette tapes, your video makes me want to find a reel to reel. Thanks again.
@@adehanft - reel-to-reel is easier to work with. The first tape delays I made I used the amps from old tape decks... This one has an old broken Walkman as amplifier for the extra head: ruclips.net/video/-xT16pdS3Ao/видео.html This one just flips one of the two rec/play switches and uses L for record and R for playback: ruclips.net/video/OYjC2h2sVaE/видео.html Great fun building tape echos! Best of luck! :)

Thank you!!!! :)
Wow! I grab one from Circuitbenders but never been able to use it😅
Pitch bend in the Speak and Spell can be made just connecting different pins on the board via a 1.0 Mohm potentiometer. This is the version I used: experimentalistsanonymous.com/diy/Schematics/Circuit%20Bending%20and%20Modifications/TI%20Speak%20and%20Spell%203.jpg
This is a dream came true for me..! Whish I had the skills to build one buddy! I love King Tubby and filter units so much I own a Waldord 2-Pole but this device seems just amazing for being passive! How's that even possible? Definitely subscribed for more!
Thank you so much. The secret was the enormous inductors. a total of almost 7-8 H. I got the inductors from a friend who collected electronic surplus and rare components for a long time. Apparently the larger ones originally were custom made for a very early voice synthesis experiment at a University. Here's a first test of just the inductors. ruclips.net/video/VmGu8COb88k/видео.html

Much thanks! :)
That's brilliant! How can you hack it?
Several glitch/bend points exists for all the various iterations of the Speak and Spell. this is amazing!! sounds great, what an awesome setup
thank you so much! 🙏✨☺️
Sounds interesting. Too bad the volume is so low
Thank you, and yes I know. Experimenting like this often has me starting with way too much headroom (might be needed for the feedbacks), I wished RUclips added Normalizing processing for audio -- especially since e.g. Instgram has had similar contrast boosting functions for ages… but you’re absolutely correct. I’ll try and look into optimizing pre-phone better… ❤
What kind of circuitry is used ? Very interested by the passive side 😊
It's a passive second order high pass filter. I used the formulas on this page: electronicbase.net/high-pass-filter-calculator/ There are some more details here (sorry for my messy schematic) lookmumnocomputer.discourse.group/t/diy-king-tubby-big-knob/7297/3

Hi! Reeaally trippy sounds! I’m about to try making some drone music with these. I’m a musician but quite unfamiliar with these types of devices. Would you be open to answering a few questions?
Thank you! sure, fire away. I'll do my best... :) I guess droning could work, the pitch stayed pretty stable... lowering the supply voltage produced many random effects though... (also these no brand versions are somewhat more unstable than "brand name" ICs)
What about thé Mellotrons ???!!! Mellotrons AREN'T in any way synths !!!!!
