Ta'Mika M The only thing I wish our band director would do is to place some of the old traditions back in for Band Alums to reconnect. Meaning as a member of the band in 1991 we were called the "Pride of the CIAA", which carries much more power within its name than RSOS, then it changed to something else in the mid-late 90s, (Earthquake or something). When I look at the band now, I am proud of the sound/growth/drills! Yet, as an alum there is nothing that I personally can identify with. Not only did the band (marching steps/cadences) go, many of the game day band spirit chants left! I don't know when the last time the Alumni Band marched but it has been a while now...What I see now is a lot of the SWAC/SIAC influences. Even S. Lace has changed their style. S. Lace use to pride themselves in being "Classy and Elegant"...Now S. Lace shows more technique on one hand, but their style is rather "Not classy or Elegant" from what I know of Lace! H20 can't be compared to the original "Stone Funk". Stone Funk was no JOKE......Other than that, again I am proud of what I see and hear, just wish something were left in place.

CheerPhi93 Granted, and I can totally appreciate how you feel. My comment about capturing the "true essence of the RSOS" was about just that... capturing "The RSOS". The band now and the band then are two totally different entities. The band as it was then is duly noted, recognized, and appreciated for the hard work and determination that was given during their season. The amount of dedication it takes to build a legacy cannot be measured but, speaking of the video at hand my comment still stands.

Ta'Mika M TaMika, I wasn't debating which era was better and so on. I take nothing away from RSOS...I give them all props...I was speaking of the old traditions that were tossed- that connected the old with the new -to the side leaving old band members feeling empty. Thus is the reason as to why the Alum Cheerleaders try to keep our traditions in tack, so that when we come back for homecoming, we can fall back on the 1st page of our chant list and everybody has some kind of working knowledge when we do Alumni Cheerleading regardless what years we cheered. Now that is very important to our group and one of the biggest reasons why we have a big turn out and support. The Alumni band "use" to do the same but something has broken that tradition to the point that the Alumni Band hasn't been back in a while now. TRADITIONS, keeps folk around.....and my comments still stands as well.

CheerPhi93 From being a current RSOS band member and having grown up here in Winston-Salem all my life I can say Dr. Magruder Has did a tremendous job at revamping the band program into what it is today. My mother marched for band in the late 70's early 80's and the traditions of her day are different from even your day. The way that I look at it is that with each new era of the WSSU band program some traditions are lost and some are made. Not on purpose but some traditions just die out due to lack of people to pass it down. We don't have anybody on staff currently that marched in the early 90's who could teach us the old traditions. And because of that we have made our own traditions and chants, but if somebody were to step up and come back to teach us then we are happy to learn them.

RJRDEMONS RJRDemon....Lets make one thing perfectly clear. I give Dr. Magruder and all of his staff/band member praises for the band growth, sounds, accolades, HBOTB representative, and other accomplishments. In terms of traditions/chants not being passed down, well that is debatable. I have been in numerous of conversation that band alums alike have stated, they felt either not welcomed to "Help out" or our "Old Ways" were just not welcomed. Therefore, the traditions "never" died out, they were just not welcomed with the new leader presumably. I can count at least 20-50 people now if Dr. Magruder said please come teach the band Old "Chants, old traditions, street steps, you would see a plethora of folks coming back to serve. I tell you what, propose this to Dr. Magruder and see what he says then get back with me....
