The Tired Photographer
Австралия
Добавлен 15 сен 2013
My name is Joel Stafford and I’m a busy father of two kids, so I shoot photos at night. Though they’re not the only reason I shoot Astro photos, I do enjoy it also. I choose to sacrifice my sleep to head and and chase clear skies and I want to show people how beautiful it is, and also to have these videos to look back on and show my kids. I hope you enjoy them. 👍🏼

Trying to align the Milky Way with subjects is easy, as the Milky Way Core is MASSIVE!! But trying to align the Moon (or sun) is a whole lot harder. Polar Align - DIY Skywatcher Tracker Phone Mount
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.Год назад
Polar Aligning in the Southern Hemisphere...what a nightmare!!! Well I was stoked when I found out about using the iOS App on my iPhone call PS Align Pro. This app helps me polar align my Skywatcher trackers in seconds! But the one problem I had was holding my phone to the back of my tracker when aligning and not drop my phone. So I had to find a way to fix that, and in this video I explain. Ph...
Multi-row Panoramas with SAM (Star Adventurer Mini)

I'm always looking for gear to help me archive the best images I can, and using a star tracker does that. The Star Adventurer 2i was always a little too big to fit in my already very full bag, so I needed something smaller that could do the job. SAM fits perfectly and to my surprise does it with ease. The rumours were TRUE!!! The Skywatcher Star Adventurer GTI is HERE!! I couldn't believe it when Skywatcher contacted me again to try out and review another new product, and I was super stoked that it was this. Do you feel that the GTI can handle more weight than the original Star Adventurer? I know the payload is 5kg for both, but the GTI seems more robust. I tried a 3kg telephoto lens on the original Star Adventurer and it was very shakey.
Question! Isn’t your background inverted? Orion’s belt should be to the left of the Orion Nebula. Flip your phone 180 degrees and that’s the way it has to look.
What is the max LCD screen magnification in live mode for focusing on stars?
Is the Star adventurer mini cabable of autoguiding? Or is it even necessary because it is so exact?
No….it has no auto guiding port. It’s primarily just for you wide angle Nightscapes. 👍🏼
Great video .. I have just bought a new Star adventurer 2i .. it's not my first tracker but I am more serious now about taking widefirld shots of the night sky . I bought a zs61 scope but I find myself looking at a DSLR and a very widefield lens especially with the winter constellations around the corner . Thanks for your insight into this fascinating hobby . It really has helped and also it's great to see a channel that concentrates on the more basic areas of astrophotography , ie using affordable equipment opening up the night sky for more and more people .
🙌🏼 I really glad that my video has been of help. That is my intention. Thanks for the feedback.
I sold my old v2 Star Adventurer a couple of years ago when i got my first telescope mount (iOptron CEM26). But it's an overkill for these simple tracking shots where is just want a wide field tracked shot of the Milky Way, so i can create a composite image with a nice astro landscape foreground. I think i will go with the Mini this time, just because of the small form factor and it will be enough for my D750 and a 85mm lens. Cheers!
Think about the Nomad as well!
The mini is honestly the only tracker I use now. I sometimes use the 2i just to blow the cobwebs off 😂👍🏼
Great video thanks. Was looking at the gti but after watching your video it might be the mini.
The mini is mighty 🙌🏼
Hey Joel thanks for the tip, but I’ve noticed it is very hard to put two phone holder in the same direction while the screw is tighten. Do you have any ways to fix this issue😂
I’ve had no troubles. 🤷🏻♂️
Happy to here that about the 50mm 1.8s, its the superior lens for the money. It was what I could afford with my new Z6ii, and was hoping to do some astrophotography. as a Nikon user the Z6ii was my choice because of its low light capabilities, it is a fantastic camera, the misunderstood auto focus is incredible. Nikon has always made great cameras, but gets bad press, hum, I wonder why?
Some days I nearly wish I was a full time Nikon shooter because of that camera.
Just discovered your channel. Great content! I look forward to seeing more from Queensland skies. I’ve been under them many times in visits from Canada. Just a tip - everyone misses the trick with the Mini (then complains about always having to use WiFi) - just use the app once to setup a sequence of enough shots for several hours of tracking. Then turn on the AutoRun function under Settings. From then on you just need to power it on with the button. It starts turning without needing to use the app or WiFi again. Not unless you want to shoot time lapses with it. Cheers!
You’re 100% right, it’s an underrated tracker. Thanks for watching, I hope you subbed? 😋👍🏼
I like this hack, much smaller to carry than the Skylabs phone holder. It looks like the link to the Skinny phone mount is broken, are you able to update please?
I’ll have a look and fix it if I can. 👍🏼
The link works. the plate is apart of a small tripod kit unfortunately, but worth it.
@@TheTiredPhotographer Oh yeh it does, thank you!
How would you mount ioptron or star adventurer tracker on vh30r? Any tips on that?
You just need to connect a Arca-Swiss plate to the bottom of the tracker. The Star Adventurer and the Mini are the same. IOptron I’m not sure about as I’ve never used one, but my guess is it’s the same.
Is this my friend John Rutten?
This is him Mr Rutter 🙌🏼
Send me his instagram or phone please an old friend

Good hack, I like it
It works well and is small enough to keep in the bag.
Mate loving the idea of getting a tracker, can remember you trying to convince me to get one back in the day
It's never to late mate.
Each season I say I'm gonna buy a tracker. I think the mini is good enough for me
I hardly use anything else now. I even contemplate selling the other trackers sometimes.

Ipad could also be used for flat frames as a backlit screen, so not the worst idea tbh.
This is true. Expensive flat frame tablet though.

Great Video, thanks. I hope to buy a star Tracker this year... Lyn Maher
Thanks Lyn. It the best way to take your night sky images to that "Next Level".
I’m looking for the link to purchase the dyi phone holder for polar alignment.
Hi Allen, they’re in the videos description section.
A great chat lads, from an avid supporter of both both channels here in Scotland 🍻
Thanks you for the support. Glad you enjoyed it, plenty more to come. I’ll do the rounds here in Australia first, and then I’ll head international 😉👍🏼

What a really good idea Joel. Great to hear about John's journey with astro etc. Keep up the great work boys.
Thanks Richard. I’ll be reaching out to you in no time. 😉👍🏼
All good mate @@TheTiredPhotographer
"Getting an image is a bonus" is such a great way to look at a night out shooting. Mungo is such a magical place.
Couldn’t agree more. 🙌🏼
Hi Joel and John, A good start to the series of Astro Chats. Keep it going and keep the astro talent coming. I'm always keen to see and hear what other nightscape photographers are currently doing and what their history and nightscape photographic journey has been. Looks like you have a new tattoo on your right wrist John?? Did you get that one for Christmas? 😎😁👍🤣
Thanks for the feed back, glad you enjoy this type of content like I do. 🙏🏻
😎
Thanks for watching mate 👍🏼
Speaking of killing computers which brand of Ram does everyone recommend
Macbook pro, you can't beat Apple Silicone!
As John said…..Apple. I’m on a Mac Studio now with the M1 Max chip and 32GB RAM. It’s a beast 👌🏼
Best tripod head for the money. Great deals to be found. I have 2, and the second one I got new for 50% less than my first (new).
I’d like another head, but my “want” list is to big 😂
Good review. Confirmed my suspicions, have been considering this tripod for a while, ordered the same tripod just then after watching review. Good stuff.
Glad I could help!
I had to look at some RUclips videos to see how to connect the flattener. lol
Yeah, sadly took me a little longer than I expected Lol
The fact that the flattener/reducer costs almost as much as the tube still shocks me...
Same here honestly, but it’s similar to extenders for camera lenses in the photography world.
This must be the best combo for nightphotography I am looking at that two way head :)
It really is. I can’t see myself changing my tripod set up from this.
Please be careful, falling asleep whilst driving! Been there done that!
I appreciate the care 🙏🏻 I always pull over when driving home and feel sleepy. 👌🏼
Bro I've watched this for 19 minutes ONLY to know how many time you left between exposures and you didn't even mention it
I don’t leave anytime between exposures. I continue to take photo after photo. I do need to do a new Star Trail video though.
So .. what, u hadda motor-drive on the film slr. I've gotta Tamron-SP 500/f8 adapted 2 k-mount Pentax. (gotta clean the fungus out of it 1st but ..). I like the idea of adapting camera lenses b4 shelling out 4 a full-on telescope. So .. u didn't use a star-tracker in that ISS transit? Helpful tut mate👌
No real need to use a tracker for the transit. It would make it “easier” not to continually adjust the camera every minute. But as long as the camera has the moon in shot 10secs before transit you should be right 👌🏼
Thank you for this vlog. I'm looking at the Star Adventurer GTI there is one thing I've been wondering about. Can you polar a line by only using the app only?
Yes, you can use the app to help with polar alignment. I personally haven’t done it, as I now have the ZWO ASIair to control my GTi when using it. It has its own PA routine.
Just got one and left oking forward for clear skies
Such a great little refractor 🙌🏼 Clear skies.
that f1.2 lens is amazing . I bought the z9 but as a backup i am going to buy the z62 and going to try this. Here in the Netherlands it is not that dark but with some timing it is workable
The Z6II would nearly make me leave Canon and switch, the camera is that good 👌🏼
@@TheTiredPhotographer wow good to read
I really do not understand, why the combination of leveling base and two way tilt head is not much more popular. I had the the Acratech head with leveling base years ago for my large format, sold it together with the camera some years ago. After deciding to do large format again, i purchased a „new“ used Toyo 45A camera and started to look for a head again. I now also use the VH30R, combined with the Lb-60N leveling base on my tripod (Sirui) and it is just as nice as the much more expensive Acratech. I really do not see the reason to use three way tilting heads anymore. Once the base is leveld, the two way head gives the two movements I need while preventing a slant horizon no matter how I move it. And because there are less movements, the entire thing is much more sturdy and holds the camera perfectly stable.
WORD!! 🙌🏼 I will never go back to a ball head. I’m two way head for life now.
Nope...i want to see the true images
I’m not sure what you mean? 🤔
I have the same scope how do you remove the green part ?
It just unscrews.
Using the reducer/flattener, what else did you need to attach your camera? Just a t ring?
Yes, just the T-Ring.
Awwwww.... you're trying hard aren't you... lol
I was 😂
I've had the acratech head and a gitzo LVL tripod scored back in 2011 when the au dollar was better than us dollar over 5 times better than the leofoto 284 lo LVL tripod and same head as yours I'm using have yet to put calipers on the legs but pretty sure mine ain't 28mm
The Acratech head looks great, but can’t justify that price in AUS Dollar. 🥴
@@TheTiredPhotographer yea brutal hey I think at the time oz$ was at a 1.25 to 1 buck USA back in 2011 when I sold it I doubled my money but I am kicking myself as they are perfect tripods zero movement not just built but engineered and built and the acratech once locked in zero movement I near used the tripod as a motor lift one day lol there that tough
@@TheTiredPhotographer hi mate if you could hit up some of knowledge on trackers I'm going to buy a star tracker I just want to do landscape stitched panoramic with my nikon d810 and 12-24mm what's the best option nowadays for a tracker today I'm thinking the skywatecher with 2 axis n wifi was thinking the MSM but not real sure cheers for any info
Hi Good to see another Aussie on here. I use the same head, have for sometime. I shoot landscapes in the Blue Mountains of NSW Have subscribed to your channel. Cheers Sniper Photography
I appreciate the follow from a Aussie local 🙏🏻
So glad that I accidentally found you while trying to decide if I should buy the 8mm. If you are ever in Ohio (United States), let me know. I would love to have you over for some sky pictures. Keep up the inspiring work!!!!
Thanks for the support 🙏🏻 I’ll make it to the US one day chasing some darks skies.
I just got mine today. Shame they cannot even include a bit of a manual huh?
I’ll suggest to them that they should for sure. 👍🏼
@@TheTiredPhotographer There is thread in the dew shield, do you have any idea what that is for?
Do you know if its possible to dither on this mount? I recently got one and I can't find a way, even using NINA
I personally haven’t, but there is a setting in my ASIair that tells the mount to Dither. It’s not really the mount that has a dither mode, rather the program telling the mount to do it. That’s as far as I know.
good video, i am thinking of getting one, do you have to have a sky-watcher ed62 0.9x reducer flattener???? can you do with out it, what is happen if not use the sky-watcher ed62 0.9x reducer flattener?? thank you
If you don’t use the flattener then the image quality will be pretty average on the edges. It’s recommended to get the flattener when taking photos.
@@TheTiredPhotographer ok thank you
doing great as usual :) keep it up!
Thanks Kate 🙏🏻
