Ex marine engineer. If you have a technical question on anything mechanical add to the comments whether its relevant to the video or not- or drop me an email. As a Technical Authority I share a common trait which is I don't guess, if I don't know the answer I will either research it or ask one on my many contacts. I am not a business, I have no money , motorbike restoration is a hobby going into retirement from oil&gas in a couple of years. I am on linkedin with the name as per my email

You need to get it on pipe over 6000 revs !! You are riding it like a 4 stroke
hilarious
D'yer know whats hilarious. The three trolls with the negative comments don't have a single video between them. Hey chaps, go buy a motorbike, learn how to ride it, take a video so we can comment.
Two strokes need the bollocks to run to get it hotter to run properly and not run it slugy so need to give it balls to run it ok.😊
Dring…ding, ding ding ding
It cracks me up. See the video of the rd50m ride... it does the same thing ...but even funnier

If you're gonna ride it home, at least give it some serious beans, otherwise what's the point of the video???
getting home from work and not dying was always my starting point. I was commuting on a 40 yo bike. See earlier video just have after it was fnished when I 'belted' it a bit more
Hang on...I was doing over 60 down country lanes...how fast do you ride yours?

My thoughts where, iv never seen one under 5000rpm, well done, all of ours where in the red most of the time, lol
I went to make some bushing.... then found the issue with the vibration. The tail stock 2mm higher than the head stock centreline. This the parting tools where set above centreline. I only realised this when I started to make bushing. This was real, it was axially parallel and there is no adjustment. I have rough filed the bottom of the tail stock and got it to about .5mm just good enough to allow me to make the bushing which I was in a rush for. I am now going to take mu time ang/e get the last .5mm.
Great video 👏🏼
Thank you!!
Better of sawing of first by hand then face the end.

That took me back to 1985 and tracing a short on my 350LC in a cold dark backyard in December. The fault was found in exactly the same area as yours.
Good video, have you been able to find a four jaw independent chuck for your lathe?
Good video. Just had mine delivered, waiting on some help to lift it. Have you looked for a 4 jaw independent chuck?

Hello nice video. I was interested i. Getting into trying to fix up an old scooter And I was wondering if you could please tell me what models would have easy parts availabilty??? And what model would be a good place to start on? And should I consider a Honda Cub? And if so what years? Or perhaps which years to avoid? Many thanks for any tips you may have. Thanks mate😂
It depends what you want to do, Restore bikes for fun, restore bikes for money, restore bikes for nostalgia. I sit in the middle of the first two where I restore bikes to 'keep my hand in' as an ex marine engineer. My wife lets me do it if I have a zero cost..i.e. I can sell the bike for what I have in it. Like any bike the cub has a market, its market is full of poorly restored or older models so if you are going to do it and sell it, it needs to be correct. Do the research, join every facebook forum about them.I really want to do a round headlight C70 or similar just so I can have a play with its gearbox. The problem is the condition f bikes for sale. A single break in the leg guards can make a bike impractical to restore. A moped/scooter covers a lot of bikes. From a fs1e where you can get every nut and bolt, thorough to Ns50 melodies which if anything is missing ( beyond simple internals such as pistons and externals such as carbs you really are looking at donor bikes. Good news is there is a shed load of them. My recomendation to anyone thinking of restoring abike is to do what you are suggesting, pick something eaily for which there is lots of informaton and cost if it all goes wrong shouldnt break the bank. Take your time, go for originality, and enjoy. The best part of restoring bikes was my father/son rides and more lately husband wife rides. There are so many local 'meets' who only accept mopeds/scooters ( my 70 odd year old ex sand track racing, big bike riding cousin now only runs around on up to 125cc bikes as its more fun)
Great thanks for the reply. I was trying to do it for mainly profit. But I also used to work in Maintenance and would like to keep up and learn new skills. But I could use a 50cc moped for transport, also. My Dad had the Honda Cub 50 I have seen a nice Yamaha Passalo in great cosmetic shape. But engine was like a tractor. The parts seem available but not orignal Yamaha bits..@@motobrikerestorations1354
@@astafford8865 In which case you have to be highly selective about your projects. FIzzies, rd's nearly always make money... matching numbers only. But there time in the sun is coming to the end. The next 'big thingis the TZR's nsr's, rgv's and ks1's. Select modesl only a NSR250 MC16 is worth a tenth ( yes tenth) of the price of a NSR250 MC28 but they cost about the same to restore for example.
Did a lot of 16 year old "tuning" on mine. Had the Micron (didn't have the end can like yours), RD200 downpipe (with some adjustment) and had the block transfer ports matched. Boyesen reeds, no head gasket (just Hermetite), bigger main jet, bellmouth. Bizzarrely, it ended up not as a screamer but as having more low end torque. Fitted 15 tooth front sprocket and 38 tooth rear. It would do 55mph any day of the week and occasionally 65mph if the conditions were good (cool crisp day). Downhill it would go off the clock if the descent was long enough.
Reminder right at the start , I'd forgotten just how bad LC mirrors were at staying tight . Got sick of them so just took them off , never to be put back on .
1980.
Thanks been seeing mixed reviews on these things so good to see it in action
I like it. Used it a number of times now.
My Son and Daughter just bought me this same Lathe for my 60th, you have an RD250/400 same colour as mine back when I was 17!
More I use the lathe, the more I like it. Its already paid for itself
The throttle is on the right.....WIND IT UP, you're just labouring it, you really need to use the power band. Its just chugging along😮
I'm a plodder.... see me rd50 vid if you want to see me giving a bike the bifters!
That bike will oil its plugs soon and stop working on one cylinder . You have got to flog it they are a primarily an excitement machine. Give it some 6000rpm in first three gears.
I sold it about 4 or 5 years ago to pay for 2 new projects
I know that you were on the first run but you were too cautious about opening it up to the proper power band. I had one of these a RD400 F from 1979 to 1981. Great bike I thrashed it everywhere and went two up with panniers and rack and tank bag on a tour from Scotland to Italy. BTW the Rd400 E and F (yours) has electronic ignition. Run it on modern fully synthetic two stroke oil less smoky and much better lubricatiion than the old Castrol TT mineral oil I used to use. You need to open it up. Your video was quite boring
Plus I was not an experienced biker. I didnt pass my test until about 4 years before this video was made.
You are one boaring person give it the beans and clear its theoat out
'Ex marine engineer' what on, a rowing boat?
Finished off last 10 years as Chief Engineer on a dive support multi role vessel. Before that for 12 years I sailed on VLCC, VLOBO, product tankers, LNG and LPG. Coming ashore I started as superindent becoming global marine manager for a large international well intervention and drilling company. The last 10 years to retirement I was Marine Technical Authority with a large multinational oil and gas company. For 15 years I had the No1 returned Marine engineering website ( google search returned) which led to a number of things like several books based on the content and being interviewed as SME on BBC TV and Radio. I have done talks at many venues on such as DP systems, safe navigation in Installation 500m zones, Risk profile changes caused by alternately fuelled vessels. Currently authoring new industry guidance on Installation/Ship collision avoidance for OEUK ( yes despite being retired). OK that my cards on the table...lets hear yours.... I wont bore you with the work I have done on safe lifting operations but if you have read the IMCA documents you already know it
@@motobrikerestorations1354 Mine? m/cyle tinkering since 1978. Your CV is more impressive on paper but not technically on that Rd400 video! Have you still got it?
@@bananabrooks3836 I have no idea what you are talking about... ask me a technical question... tomorrow though... I am going to bed. Or watch some of the other videos. I try to pass on any knowledge I have gained over the years.. If you are asking am I a technical expert on RD400's then you have me there.
@@bananabrooks3836 You will definitely be more competent on these, and probably most bikes. I started doing this not long after coming ashore as I missed the satisfaction of actually fixing something. Like most marine engineers I can do most things...just not particularly well. My most recent project was fixing the variable speed drive of a valve grinder for the chap who does the cylinder rebores for my bikes. I am finishing off the restoration of my rd350lc ( second time around as I have had it that long); then It needs to be sold to pay for paintwork on a Honda NSR250 MC 28 and a Suzuki GT550 (engine rebuild for that first, nsr already done) Wifes shouting at me to get to bed.

i think your right
Select only Yamaha RD’s !!! Absolutely the greatest motorcycle ever made!!!!
Hi man.... Can I install this fuel tank for yamaha rx100?? Pnp?
I think the rd 50 tank will sit a little more back and does not have the 'tag' at the back for securing it which the original rx100 has. I think if you are comfortable with welding you could make it fit
Great video! Would love to see more content on the Clio
How long did it take to receive it once you ordered it?
It was less than a month, maybe 2-3 weeks
I'm thinking of getting a Creworks lathe. Have you used yours very much, have you had any problems with it? Thanks.
There is a weird knocking coming from the gearbox; I have taken it apart and pretty sure its nothing serious. Thats been the only issue over several hours now. I would certainly recommend it
Good choice!! Wise investment also, you'll never lose money on it 👍
🏍👍👍
Very interesting to hear about I enjoyed watching this
It's a very cool car and one that needs driven with respect. Absolutely brilliant and clearly loved.
Don’t be scared of it
Great video! I love RDs. I still have my all original, pristine 74 rd60 I was given for Christmas in 1974, I was 10 yrs old. It's identical to the green bike you showed at the beginning. It has 2500 miles and I still put a mile on it every now and then. I would put your bike around 1977/78 going by the wheels. The rear winkers on your bike are off a h1,h2 or kz kawasaki. I rode my bike to get my motorcycle license in 1980. It suddenly got really small on the open road. Mine came with a 12 tooth sprocket. I put a 11 tooth on it for more torque off road then to a 13 tooth for the road. Lost allot of torque. Mine would run 50+ on level roads and could touch 60 on downhill grades. I love seeing videos on these little bikes!
you can buy shim steel but I have old bits of sheet saved from things like fridge sides
I'm looking into getting a small lathe, my first lathe of any kind. So forgive if this isn't the smartest question, but can you replace the tool holder with one that is adjustable for height. I don't know if I have the skill level to shim the tool like you did but if I could adjust the height in tiny increments, it would be easy to get the tool centered accurately.
Thats a great question. And the poor answer is maybe. There are designs where teh tool fits ina holder that fits ina solt on the tool stock and then can be raised and lowered using a screw thread on the top. You can then have seneral tools in these tool holders making swop out really quick. Have a go at shimming. I probably made it look difficult but once you have done it once its really easy and you have the shims already cut.
@@motobrikerestorations1354 Thanks man. What do you use for shim stock? Just some thin sheet metal?
Hi I have a loom for an X7 which will need a refurb and those connector kits look really useful, do you have a link where to find them please? Are they L series? Thanks for sharing👍🏻
There are lots of these on amazon and ebay and I have never bought a bad one. you will likely need to by a couple fo kits to get alll the sizes but compared to the cost of a new loom its well owrth it This is the last one I bought www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07DNSKRCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@motobrikerestorations1354 Brilliant, thank you and have a good weekend 👍🏻
oil in petrol + lube pump will make it weak mixture
This is completely true. It can lead to high combustion temperatures and should be avoided. Its such a long time ago I think I did it as I wasnt sure the pupe was working. I havent fdone it since
@@motobrikerestorations1354 I holed my gt 250 piston doing same ,
@@tbeardmore1 iI got lucky.
You can get adjustable carriage stops to deal with that problem, but micro switches is a better idea for sure. Trouble is I'm not sure how to wire up the switches on my lathe. You got a better deal then I did, I paid £659 for the creworks 7"*14.
Thats sounds a pretty good price.
@@motobrikerestorations1354 yeah I'm happy with it, but the one you bought was on for £799 I think, but all things considered the lathe I have is a little bigger for needs anyway.
For the wiring you pick on the stop button. This as well as isolating the supply preventing start when the x-switch is activatedcreates an e-stop so it doesnt autostart when the x-switch resets
@@motobrikerestorations1354 ok so would I put the power into common and wire up normally closed or normally open, to the off switch??
@@guerillagardener2237 totally agree with you. I have never owned one of these hobby lathes and thought they would be tiny. Its very unlikely I will every need the extra size. The primary use with be fabricating small parts for the bikes I restore
I’m looking into buying this exact late right now and i plan on watching all your videos on it first
If asked the question knowing what I know now would I buy it the answer is yes. I still recommend the safety features I added. Plus I may fit a digital read out as there is a lot of play in the bed- I dont use it enough currently to justify the cost but when we get in the summer I will much more- my garage is like an ice box at the moment. There are some well informed videos on this lathe if you have a trawl around which all end up mainly positive. It has started a clicking noise from the gearbox that caused me to strip the whole thing apart. I didnt find anything wrong, I think its the gears jumping into re-alignement every so oftern
@@motobrikerestorations1354 I’ve been searching around and looking at loads of different mini lathes unsure of if I should pull the trigger on one and after seeing good reviews of the customer service on Amazon for this one and hearing it’s pretty good I’ll probably be purchasing it with tooling tomorrow or Thursday.
