The gloves are not necessary. Just to prevent sprained wrists. I recommend buying a heavy bag if you have a management issue, it's gonna be fun. But for a total beginner, maybe you can put it standing behind the wall to give you more impact during punch and kick.

Have you tried punching random people on the streets or in the subway? It's legal in bigger cities

I will not punch anyone unless the situation calls for it. I just maintain my basic training and keep fit to be ready to defend myself if anything happens.
