I was a little boy when I Used to see him play against the Mets. It was not often they would get him out. Except Seaver. Seaver owned everybody's ass with few exceptions. God rest both these titans in eternal peace

He was absolutely the greatest player I ever saw play and I also saw the Yankees and the Dodgers in the fifties. From the Forbes Field right field stands , I watched him throw a strike into the catcher's glove to nail the runner at the plate. He was as exciting as he was great.

in roberto clementes day it was either him or willie mays as the best player in baseball ! we used to always get right field tickets at 3 rivers stadium to see clemente play right field and mazeroski play second base ! as a high school athlete I played right field at 3 rivers stadium it was an honor !

The most important award bestowed to MLB players is the one named after our 🇵🇷 Roberto Clemente, no other one comes close. To have his 21 retired is copying, imitating something that has been done already with another player, Jackie Robinson, and not recognizing, as if diminishing the importance of the award, Roberto was no copy, he was an original. ⚾

I had people in my family who didn't like baseball, but spoke of Roberto as if he were governor. Btw, I'm Puerto Rican and spent my summers in Puerto Rico with my family in the 1960's. Clemente might as well have been governor because he was already a god.

I saw my first major league game in 1961 at Forbes Field. Before the game Roberto and others were warming up playing catch on the sideline. I played little league baseball and lived and died with the Bucs. I had an old scruffy baseball with me but I was too afraid to ask Roberto for his autograph. Pittsburgh beat the Cardinals and Ernie Broglio 8-2 but all I can remember is being about 10 feet away from the greatest Pirate ever.

Roberto Clemente is my favorite ballplayer of all time. He was so beloved in Latin America that he could go to one of the roughest cities in the world, Managua, Nicaragua, with literally a sack full of money to hand out to the kids, and nobody, I mean NOBODY, messed with him. A true humanitarian in every sense of the word.

  • @billygoat1708

Most of these commentators never saw Roberto play. Pujols wasn't even born yet. Old film clips just show a little of Roberto's talent. You had to see him play to know how great he was. I saw him play as a kid. I sat in the right field stands many times and watched Roberto throw that ball with precision. Every team had superstars back then but Roberto was the best of them all.

Grew up about 65 miles north of Pittsburgh in the 60’s and 70’s. I idolized Roberto Clemente. I know I’m biased but in my mind he was the greatest player I ever saw play. He died serving others. We should all be so courageous.

Once about 2 decades ago, I had the chance to speak with Maury Wills. I asked him who he thought was the best ball player of his era. I expected him to say Mays, Mantle, or Aaron. But he said, “Roberto Clemente”. I grew up watching baseball in that era, and I knew Roberto was good……but didn’t really know how great he was.
