Manually shifting a 4l60e transmission without a computer. A better way? plan 2
We use a 4-position rotary switch. The 4l80e isn't specifically talked about but it's very easy to translate this plan to a 4l80e.

Manually shifting a 4l60e or 4l80e transmission without a computer. A better way? plan 1
Просмотров 11621 день назад
The pinouts talked about are for the 4l60e, not the 4l80e but the 4l80e is discussed when covering the switch plan. What I think is a better wiring plan than what I have seen elsewhere for manually controlling the shifting solenoids on a 4l60e or 4l80e transmission. Plan 2 to follow. Plan 3 is on the drawing board but might take a while. I know how it all works already, just show me how this pl...

We use vinegar, a flap disk, wire wheel, sander and rust converter to prep our rusted-out roof to have fiberglass and then bedliner put over it. Basically, a faux vinyl top. For those of you who have watched previous videos... the plastic sheeting I used to tape it off with has a lot of rust on it, the areas I've primered previously are not rusting.

How does the underside frame look?
Surprisingly good.
👍
floors won't be bad just get new floor pans. That makes easy work of it.
Can't wait to see how it turns out. I bet it will be pretty nice.
So the valve will be set in the D position?
Yes, D is what i think of as "forward" mode, when the gear shifter is in "D" we can select a forward gear by activating solenoids. Lack of input (both solenoids off) and the 4l60e defaults to 3rd gear, the 4l80e defaults to 2nd gear.
Is there any kickdown or automatic shifting, or does it stay in whatever gear you put it in? If I am stopped and switch to OD+lockup does the engine stall?
I don't have it in a vehicle yet, just prepping. The expectation is that there won't be any kickdown or automatic shifting, and that it would stall if put in OD lockup when stopped.
Nice setup, how about a 5th position on the rotary switch for 4th lockup?
!! That's a really good idea !! Better than my 4 plus a switch. Pretty sure I'm going to use that idea. Thank you. I'm working on an idea for a paddle shifter, it might get interesting.
@@mykle196 I hope you use it. A paddle setup sounds interesting. The term de-bounce comes to mind to avoid a downshifting a few at a time.. Happy New Year
@@victorthecarguy3126 You are way ahead of me lol. But that's the direction I'm going. Happy New Year to you as well. Thank you.
The most important thing is to save the car.
Thanks Duane, it really does just boil down to that. Need to save the ones that can be saved.
Much better! Does this mean you won’t have a gear shifter or a column shifter? Instead you’ll have a switch?
The normal gear selector will be the same for P, R, and N. D will put it in forward mode and the switch will choose from there.
@ ok I understand
The second plan seems like it’s going to be a lot easier, but either way works good job
Ha, easier he says, the converter lockup on a relay part is kicking my butt, I can't find a way to make it latch with the load being before the relay. The rotary switch for gear selection is cake though.
@ once you figure it out it’s gonna be awesome.Less switches is always better. Anyways, this is over my head.😂
Great video with very good instructions. This will help who need it! 👍🏻
Thanks JD
Mykle I love it!!! I need one of theses😂
Thanks. It was a good day. Saw you've started on the rear quarter on your Firebird, you're making progress there, looking good.

Should have pressure washed ot with hold tight and water , blow the water off. It won't flash rust and if you keep it in a garage and don't let water get on it. You will have two weeks to get primer on it
No slicks......
True, good point. Easier to replace tires than it is transmissions.
@@mykle196 Yeah let them spin a little. Easier on everything.
Hahahaha thanks for the shout out!!!!! I love the Skylark. Back in the 90s when I was a teenager. One of my buddies had one so they hold a special place in my heart. Glad to see you’re not parting it out.
You deserve the shout out. It's hard to see any old car with any cool factor end up at the scrap yard.

The Allen key looking things might be for a piston ring compressor
Thanks JD. Appreciate it.
Congratulations on your purchases.. after you put a cam in that motor I guess if you keep your foot out of it you'll make the transmission last
Thanks. We will find out I guess.
Bigger cam! My vote counts twice

Yay!!!! She’s alive!!!! Good job thanks 4 the update!!!

What is your plan on repairing the rotted out roof?
I honestly don't know yet. A few options.. 1. Do nothing, I bought it as a parts car, just keep it that way. 2. Do it right, put a new roof on it. It really needs a new quarter also and is missing the front bumper, grill is cracked etc Probably more $ than it would be worth. 3. Fiberglass it where the vinyl top used to be. If the fiberglass depth is in the ballpark of what the vinyl was the trim will hide it 4. Fiberglass but with a top layer of carbon fiber 5. Kevlar it instead of fiberglass, just seems like it would be cool to say it had a Kevlar roof and I happen to have a bunch of it I picked up for free, but it's in 7" wide rolls, and is pretty thick so would be harder to work with than fiberglass. I'm open to ideas / opinions.
