Back in the 1960s Charles de Gaulle spoke for first time about the so-called "Splendid Isolation" but it was too early at that time and the USA was in a globally all-mighty position. What is Splendid Isolation? To abandon the USA as a trade partner, integrate the in-European trade like being a federal superstrate and strengthen commerce and other relations with the rest of the world excluding the US. Maybe in the 1960s was too early, but perhaps this policy is near and EU should consider such an approach seriously. The EU also could consider leaving NATO. Maybe the Europeans don't contribute as much as the Americans but for the last 40 years all the NATO wars were basically American wars. EU had no immediate interests in Iraq or Afghanistan, so, maybe it is time for a friendly amicable divorce that leads to a departure from an Americano-centric global order. As far as defence is concerned, the EU could form its own Defence Forces. Maybe Canada and Mexico could see alternatives strengthening their trade routes with Europe and China and leaving the US alone...

What makes the US economy good is that we are a consumer based economy, we buy, buy, buy so what do tariffs do they raise the cost of the products we buy and the consumer (us) pays the tariffs. The US sells the oil we cannot refine and imports oil that we can. If we alienate our trading partners why would they want to trade with us Canada exports crude oil to the US approximately 60% of our imports. Both Canada and Mexico export to the US finished steel which we don’t have the capacity to do ourselves. The US cannot survive economically as a isolationist nation we produce a lot of corn, wheat and soybean, however in the first Trump administration he screwed up the soybean market with the china tariffs and they stopped buying and went somewhere else. It cost the American public approximately 28 billion dollars in subsidies to the agricultural community, taxpayer’s dollars we’d payed out. I’m not blaming farmers etc. just bad policies. Now I’m not blaming any foreign country for what’s happening, the real blame falls on the American manufacturing companies that sold out the American people for higher profits in the name of lower consumer prices. When jobs move out more people become dependent on social programs to survive and cost is borne by the rest of society. All this because of American greed, that being said let’s go back to trade if we can’t produce any products we as a country have nothing to trade. And if we alienate our trading partners and allies who will want to buy our products.
