Restoring vintage diner style chairs, I tried various products and had a lot of success. I wasn’t using a single one of the products as recommended (except maybe Odie’s oil) so the products used to dye the chairs or fill the vinyl are really not at fault for any issues that come up here.  So far after days of use, there are no issues.

I normally scuff sand the piece using 220 grit and then use a gel stain since it sits at the surface of the piece
That would normally be a better option than what I did. I'm glad you mentioned it. My big concern was having the top match the rest of the piece since all of the other surfaces were identical, so I don't think a gel stain would have worked as well in this case. It certainly would have been less time consuming.
@@adelineredesignI’ve had a similar set and the top wasn’t in great condition, I use gel stain( antique walnut on the entire piece, and seal it using Mohawk product) and it turned out great
