    I would say one of the reasons I love pixel art is because I grew up on pixel art games. I was a hand-drawn artist when I was younger and pixel art is the only digital art form I've really explored outside of that. It is really fascinating how far things have come since back then. You know these days they use all kinds of technological tricks such as shaders & combining 3d graphics with 2d and so on to create games that are pushing the medium forward. A game I've been working on has received comments about how it reminds people of this game or that game and so on but with the limitations not being present of those previous games it's not exactly the same (although it is nice to remind people of games they loved). Nostalgia can be tricky but like you said about unlimited colour palette and the additional things I mentioned in this comment things have changed dramatically. I'm actually considering a hand drawn art style for my next game as pixel art is being taken less seriously (I won't get into too much about who and why). Plus the fact I grew up putting pencil to paper when I was younger. I think with the high bit resolutions of today's modern computing some pixel art can be gigantic in size and editing something pixel by pixel is a real chore when you start working on bigger sprites.

    Good video this but I'm still not sold on many cases of pixel art although, some of it can be done fairly well , I enjoyed the voxel based Cloudpunk earlier this year. I just find it absurd in 2023 how many people are happy to play games which look like they were made in 1993 , which have existed since then. Pixel art doesn't play well with modern LCD panels especially at 4k ,(625-line) CRTs did a good job of hiding to some extent the flaws of pixel art (it's more tolerable on small mobile screens too). Such games are usually extremely dated and not timeless IMO and it's time it was put to pasture and we at least moved onto vector illustrations.

    Pixel art and stylized, cartoonish art always had some special appeal for me. I love bright, vibrant fantasy worlds and there is something special that makes it better than realistic approach. It tells me that I am not grounded in reality, it's warm, welcoming, very great for your mood when it's raining, dark outside. As a kid I spent tons of time playing with knights, warriors and soldiers figurines or making my own out of plasticine, these also were simplified. Same with animation and probably has something to do with how our brain is wired. Other than appeal, yeah, it has lower entry point (not low though, as you mentioned, art is complicated, specially if you are not "gifted" and have to grind for it, learning every simple concept on your own), it's faster to make than 3D so you can get more done in shorter amount of time, it's also cheaper if you would want to pay someone for making it. There are tons of styles even within pixel art and you can find your own, get inspirations, fuse them and toy with them, learn about which colors you like for certain elements, which shapes feel better, which perspective. In the end, art or entertainment is subjective, everyone will have their own opinion. We do know when something sucks, either by intuition due to different proportions, lack of color harmony, weird positioning etc. Pixel art over all has so much to experiment, work and have fun with that you can spend your life doing it and you might still have room to improve.

    As a digital artist who is nowadays getting into traditional art I recently really experienced an important thing. Pixel art similarly to traditional art forces a limit on you where making just more detail has a much harder limit and forces you into more thought through decision making and refinement of what you have. Also, funny enough a graphite drawing feels just as timeless in the age where every smart phone functions at least as a basic photo cam as pixel art in the world of AAA graphics.

Yes teher was a bit of weird §d in the overworld but it was still simple enough to look good.

    Most people end up fast traveling everywhere because nobody wants to spend ages going from one side of the map to the other, so there is even less reason to have an enormous map. The Yakuza games are great because the open world is tiny but very densely populated and lively. Fast travel does exist in the form of taxis on the edge of town but I hardly ever use them because it only takes a minute to cross the map on foot.

In celeste and sea of stars you can see beautiful lighting that brings life to the world and makes it shine. Another important thing is the amount of pixels, to low is to old and not enough detail but to mach is like a low quality video, you just want it to be HD 2D sprit

    • @miguelcondadoolivar5149
      @miguelcondadoolivar5149 Год назад

      It depends on how the game works. Indie games that do this usually revolve around systems (like survival games or roguelites) instead of fixed stories, so it's a decent solution to the need of generating landmass and obstacles without spending a long time handcrafting a bloody cliffside. AAA games usually focus on content, being rather lacking in systems, so the soulessness of their design shows far more.

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege Год назад

      @@miguelcondadoolivar5149 There are of course cases where proc.gen. make more sense, and there are also different ways to apply proc.gen., but it will _always_ create low quality (and low variety) output compared to manual creation. Using it to create some generic 'filler', like a random generic cliffside, might not be an issue. But there's an argument to be made that mechanics-focused games benefit even _more_ from hand-crafted layouts than story-focused ones, as those environments are exactly what the mechanics have to interact with. (There's also an argument to be made that roguelites are at their core nothing but a pointless soulless numbers-grind that showcases many of the same problems as AAA games, but that's a different matter)

    I've been sick of pixel art for a very long time. Don't get me wrong, there are some gorgeous new pixel art games and this is coming from a retro game enthusiast. I grew up on Atari 2600, NES, and SNES and I LOVE the way those games looks. I just think there are so many more art styles capable of being accomplished on today's hardware and resolution, why do most 3D indie titles limit themselves to pixel art? I think appealing to nostalgia is just a safer and cheaper route than trying something too new or too different from what's out there.

    • @tourmaline07

      I agree - it's a shame that with today's tech so many want to make games which we saw 30+ years ago.

  • @plebisMaximus
    @plebisMaximus Год назад

    Honestly, it just feels like a cheap attempt at cashing in on nostalgia or perhaps just the developer trying to capture their own nostalgia. Every single time I see really good pixel art, it just frustrates me. Could've been a high res sprite instead and the game would've looked a lot better for it. Obviously it depends on the title, Shovel Knight is an homage to all those old titles, so looking like them makes sense, but there's absolutely 0 reason Binding of Isaac Rebirth had to look worse than the original. In that example, all it serves to do is kill off the unique style Edmund has and make me wish the original could run at an acceptable framerate. I love retro games and don't mind "bad" graphics, but I'd much rather see something unique and new like the Hollow Knight or Cuphead artstyles than the trillionth quirky earthbound inspired indie RPG with brightly coloured pixelart. I know I'm in the minority here, as these games all sell like crazy, but I'm just so tired of seeing it.

    • @tourmaline07

      Couldn't agree more. There's so much nostalgia tripping going on - and it as an art style doesn't work well with LCD panels larger than a smartphone IMO. Why do I want to look at blocky pixels on my 27" 4k IPS screen?

    Wow, Algorithm decided to recommend to me a smaller channel, how unyoutubish, time to celebrate! While I love pixel art, I think that the other non-AAA styles, like in Hollow Knight, Hades, Gris, Darkest Dungeon, Don't Starve, Inside, are a bit underrepresented due to people's sheer obsession with pixel art... especially since a lot of the same points you raised about pixel art apply to them as well, like timelessness and impressionistic minimalism. The reason I think pixel art dominates is mostly nostalgia coupled with US historic console dominance, here in Europe PC was more common and PC of the late 90s/early 00s (which is my childhood nostalgia) was more varied when it came to art styles. But US is a global hegemon of everything and the largest video game market so it dictates the discourse today in our global world. I'm not sure about the "lack of detail" argument entirely. You show the examples of Owlboy and Blasphemous which are crazily detailed. Often more detailed than Hollow Knight, which was used as a counter-example to pixel art. I mean, at a certain point it ceases to be a thing that distinguishes pixel art from other non-AAA art styles, because all of them rely on a degree of "impressionistic" simplicity and stylisation. When Owlboy zooms out, the difference between it and Hades' graphics starts to fade... The line between pixel-art and non-pixel art seems to be very blurry today. More often than not pixel art seems to be more one tool in the artist's arsenal, rather than the entire artstyle. Sometimes it's not even made using traditional pixel art techniques, as is the case with Dead Cells and Celeste, which are 3d with pixel filter on top. Some games offer ways of turning off that filter which results in the game becoming fully 3d. And time and time again we see the return of a specific subtype of pixel art, that is the NES/sNES look, which I think is what many people truly have nostalgia for, rather than the technique itself.
