Starboard Go Fly 85 with Go Fly foil

It's difficult for us to check if the new Starboard Go Fly board & foils are working well. So we asked a 14 years old gear (without planing skills) to get on the board to try windfoil. As you can see the board has a very typical V shape, so the board glides into planing condition and then takes off itself. So we have this board & foil for our lessons. We think it's the best board in the market ...

    Great review as always. Have you tried the Starboard the small SLX front wings (the same as MF wing series?) on this ?

      @MarcoBoone 29 дней назад

      Hi Tim, I haven't tried the SLX front wings because we don't have them :(. But the SLR 2 660 and 560 matches very well. P.S. The SLX series don't have the same shape as the MF series. Both are 7000 optimized in the design software but do have a different design philosophy. I trief the MF 820 for WINDfoil coarse racing and that didn't work. Extremely nervous and scrary to foil. But for light wind WINGfoiling the MF 820 is great

      @@MarcoBoone Hi Marco, thanks for the reply. I was considering using the MF820 for my Formula wind foil board on a 115 course racing fuselage for super light wind ( replacing the SB Millennium 1000) Reading your comments on how sketchy and scary the foil is , may make me reconsider, especially as they’re super hard to get hold of How bad/unsuitable are they for a 100wide board ? Thanks

      @@timboswijk416 I wouldn't recommend to use the MF820, it will be terrible. Go for the SLR2 880. This a great replacement for your millenium 1000. Lower stall speed and way faster. I am using the SLR2 880 for course racing and I love it SLR2 880 is much better than last years SLR1 880.

      @@MarcoBoone Thanks Marco for your words of wisdom. It is much appreciated, alas no SLR wings in the UK.So I have ordered SLX 665 to go with my SLX 565 front wing today. Plus a 105 99/31 jumbo 2 and 130 tail wing. With the 100cm span of the 665, I’m wondering how well it will work on my 115 Evo 1 fuse with a 255 thin/200 tail wing set up, as big course racing wings aren’t available here.

    It's hard to tell which board is better. As you mentioned, the X15 needs more speed to fly, but the reason could be anything: Tuttle box angle (rake), volume, rider position, wings angle, mast position, etc. Some of these can be adjusted. Planing with a fin should also be tested with identical mast positioning and straps. This is just to check when the board starts planing, measuring it with multiple trials using GPS. Only then do we connect the foil and set everything up the same way. This will help us discover how much the shape of the board contributes to achieving early planing. We can't even say that if someone did well on a particular board, it means the board is good.

    • @windfoilennederland
      @windfoilennederland 2 месяца назад

      You are right. But we always test a board, sail or foil always with the same set up, so there is only 1 variable which is different -> the item we are testing. Besides this we always spend a lot of hours on the water in different conditions with different set up of the foils to see if there is a significant difference worth to mention. The review video is only a short recap of our findings. Otherwise it will be a very long and boaring video ;).

With the 7,0m and 8,0m2 I am always using the 560/190 wingset and for the 6,0m 400/190 wingset (When the wind is stable, otherwise I prefer the 560/190 set as well)

As explained in the video, the new generation wings are so efficient that you easily can take 1 size smaller. It will be faster and more playfull. Regards, marco

      I heard that from some customers (Liberty) as well. But the best thing is not to crash 🤪. Now serious, i have the feeling that the fit of the Drake is a little bit better. I was using size s of the Liberty first and now size m of the Drake. For me the fit of the Drake is a bit better. But some sometimes its moving up a little bit. But i had the same with all my previous harness. Especially after a crash.

    Could you please detail why you think the X15 needs better rider skills and need to be foiled with attitude? Is it a matter of volume distribution? Rail shape? Outline? Thickness? Thx

    • @windfoilennederland
      @windfoilennederland 5 месяцев назад

      Good question. We are not a designer of boards, but we think it's because of the thickness of the back side of the board and also because the deck of the board (where the back foot straps are positioned) is round. Based on our experience with all types of windfoil boards and wingfoil boards we learned that thick boards will make the board feel more nervous (they tend to rotate along the longitudinal axis). And a board with a flat deck is easier to control with your feed.

    I've really struggled with the windfoil jibe. I've gotten better at it over time though. I think my problem was that I carried over some bad jibing habits from fin windsurfing into foil windsurfing. Windfoiling is very unforgiving of bad jibing habits because the foil is so sensitive. Some key things for me were to look ahead to where you want to go downwind. Don't look at the rig or the straps. Keep the mast vertical and the rig balanced over the board. When flipping the sail may sure your front hand is as far forward on the boom as it can get. When the sail is flipping around, make sure the mast is leaning slightly into the turn. Keep your body weight on the inside of the jibe. You should never lean back or lean to the outside of the jibe.

      @fleetwoodmarine 9 месяцев назад

      @@windfoilennederland Marco thanks for the quick reply, I was very impressed you were able to hit 47 kph on the Foil glide 3. I have the foil glide 2 - 7.0 and ride the same F4 850 FW / 210 BW combination but have not be able to go faster than 42 kph. Do you think the foil glide 3 is faster than the foil glide 2? and what is your best tip for increasing speed on foil? ...you look quite relaxed at 47 kph!

    • @windfoilennederland
      @windfoilennederland 9 месяцев назад

      @@fleetwoodmarine Yes the FG3 is faster then the FG2. But also give the sail (works also with the FG2) a bit more outhaul. A bit flatter sail gives more control and more speed (less drag). I don't know what board you are using? Normally I am using the X-15 for slalom foiling. For this occasion I was using the Alien 145 and I was very much surprised how easy (and) fast this board is with the Freerace foil. The main reason is that the position of the back footstraps (in the outer position) is +/- 2 cm more to the inside, so that makes is very relaxted to stay in the back foot straps. Last tip, go for longer harness lines. In 1 year time the average length of my harness lines increased from 34 inch to 44 inch. Yes you have to adept your technique, but you will have way more control. Especially down wind and with stronger winds. 💪

  • @MichaVinstrol
    @MichaVinstrol Год назад

    How many centimeters have you set the boom? The sail seems to be very tensioned, is this the correct configuration, or should some belly be maintained? In my Glide2, the boom is set at 204cm, how much slack should I give?

    • @windfoilennederland
      @windfoilennederland Год назад

      Hi Micha, The recommended length is 203 cm. I think I put it on 206 cm and has 1-1,5 cm of space left. When the profile is deeper the pressure point is going back wards more when the wind gets stronger or sailing upwind. Since the speed with windfoiling is relatively high, it's more efficient to have a bit more flat sail. That's what we also see int he IQfoil class, the are sailing with more tenstion on the outhaul. And also the new HG6 is more flat compared to the previous version. But as mentioned in the video, the profile in general is more flat and a bit more to the back compared to the FG2. This sail is definetly faster than the old model. Regards, Marco
