Chickens in the Compost

My girls have never had access to the compost pile before. They had a blast! They really helped break up the big clumps for sifting and they were well rewarded. Even when I needed to sit and take a break, they were still hard at work. (I wonder if they feel it the next day?)

I let my ladies into the garden to prep in May and to clean up in October. They’re having a blast and I’m getting free slug control, some fertilizer, and a light tilling and weeding. Thanks girls!

We eat the extra males, though they are not very big, only 2-3 lbs. I have sold birds in the past but it broke my heart a little. lol. I love them all so much.

The little yellow one is an Ameriauna and the grey one Iḿ not sure, maybe Whiting True Blue. He came from a blue egg and looks like an English Game bird.
