Thank you for this. I’m going to be starting PPE at Oxford in October and I’ve been struggling to feel excited for the longest time, weighed down by the dread of the workload, pressures and stresses it feels I’m promised. So it’s safe to say that reading that “no” at the end of the video made my heart sink for a second. However, I also know that I’ve been in similar environments to Oxford before in terms of academic stress and expectation, and, eventually, excelled, even if at times it felt really, really tough. I am grateful that I am able to live in the moment, most often when I’m surrounded by nature (which you showed Oxford has a beautiful lot of). I am also finding myself becoming a little more excited day by day, to the point where today I had to freak out for a second because I literally couldn’t contain my joy. Your advice to celebrate trying really hit home for me, and I hope to carry that throughout my time at Oxford so hopefully I never regret it. I’m sorry you had such a hard time, and truly understand where you’re coming from in terms of the stress to depression pipeline, but I’m glad you saw the light in it - finding your friends. I hope you’re much happier and at peace with your life now. Wish me luck.

When I was 10 years old, I made up my mind to study physics. 4 years later, I was struggling but I never admitted it - I kept going. That is, until the pandemic hit in my GCSE year and my school ruined my grades. I fell into a slump, feeling lost, like I had nowhere to go. I met my teacher then, the person I looked up to when I was 10 (and partially the reason for my obsession with science). She told me a lot of things, but one thing I'll remember is that it hit me - I wasn't in love with physics, I was in love with the idea of being important to people. The Stephen Hawkings movie, Interstellar, the Aeronauts - they all romanticised this noble endeavour of a hero. No doubt that is true - but I realised that I was never going to become quite the hero I believed I would. I came out of the pandemic in the polarised end - studying Humanities at A-Level. I have always had a knack for writing. I also tend to gravitate towards historical novels in libraries. It was like God Himself had guided me towards my proper path, and suddenly lots of things started to fall into place. I'm now in my final year of sixth form, starting exams soon. I wanted to apply for Oxford last year but I faltered and bailed out in the end. And again, it's as if God guided me back - I'm applying this year, but not for the plain History I thought was a 'practical choice. I'm applying for Oriental Studies, in the hopes of honouring my past and my history and my religion. What you tell, in these little montages, about defining your own success, it all makes sense. And I tear up reading your story, imagining that God had not intervened, and I had gone into the sciences. Who knows what would have become of me. I think you are brave to tell your story in such plain terms. I haven't received comfort like this in the longest time. I hope you find the path that your soul is destined for. Thank you x
