The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, Texas, is one of the nation's largest private funding sources for basic chemical research. Since its founding in 1954, the organization has contributed to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas. The Foundation hosts an annual chemical research conference in Houston that attracts hundreds of the leading chemists and sponsors the Welch Award in Chemistry. The Foundation also bestows the Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research, an award that recognizes the work of scientists who are early in their careers and working in Texas.

Eric Jacobsen was born in New York City of Cuban parents, received his primary and secondary education at the Lycée Français de New York, and graduated from New York University in 1982 with a B.S. in Chemistry. At NYU he was introduced to research and great teaching by Yorke Rhodes. He carried out his Ph.D. studies at U.C. Berkeley under the direction of Robert Bergman in the field of mechanistic organometallic chemistry. 10 years later, I'm taking the Rice University AP Physics 1 course online on EdX, in which Professor Hafner teaches. I was originally just hoping to study for the exam, but I'm so lucky to have stumbled upon it. I feel anybody who is even a little interested in the nature of movement should take it thanks to Prof Hafner and his colleagues' amazing methods of teaching! Students at RICE are incredibly lucky to have him as prof.
