Join me as I develop my 5 acre tree farm, full sized trees, Japanese garden trees, and of course BONSAI!!!
A special thanks to Nigel Saunders of The Bonsai Zone for providing the education in my first year of this art form.
I owe my passion for bonsai to Laura, the love of my life. She bought me a bonsai starter kit for valentines 2018, and it has been ON since that day!!!

15:27 I'm new here. But I have a Flamboyant, that is 8-10 yrs old that I started from seed. I just took pictures of it here in Connecticut, I brought it in about 2 weeks ago. It has 3 leaders(?), one about a foot long, another about 1.5 ft, and the longest about 2 foot, this k of your 3 fingers coming off of the main trunk which is about 1.5" in diameter. The only growth is at the end of the 3 legs being a canopy tree, but it looks grossly inproportioned. Is there any way to get branches to grow off of the lengths, or would I have to cut back the whole branch in hopes that new sprouts will grow out the top? I don't know if I am explai ing this properly, is there any way to send you a picture. Thank you in advance, Mike
Send pics to me on instagram😎🌳✂️
Glorious day! Funny how we have good weather all summer, but it's these rare beautiful fall days we enjoy the most. Wiring job was A1 compared to my normal spaghettis - did the trick. Your tip nipping method has worked on a lot of my trees this year - sure has made life easier for me and my trees!
Sue!!! The cold is here. .was fun while it lasted. 😎🍺🍺cheers
Very interesting . Am a french gardener . Inspiring . Thanks . Merci . From Beauvais , France , in Picardie .
Cheers my French friend 😎🍺🍺
Can you wire the trunk to create more movement earlier on or would that strain the plant too much?
Absolutely...I only recently got into wiring this year. I would do it around 4 months before the trunks start getting wood coloring...when the trunks are green they are very bendy. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Cool forest and I like the Thuja's in the planting...The Birch really looks healthy with the right proportion for the setting...Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing...Sequim, WA...
Cheers WA 😎🍺🍺
As tech-wreck myself, just know that your videos are great as you do them...I'm sure that their are options out there with all sorts or bells and whistles but you'll get there when you get there, if ever...Love your content, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing...
Much appreciated 😎🍺🍺cheers
It’s paid off cutting it back so much, your trunk is girthing well, mine is the same age but shares a pot with its runt twin 😂 .
Cheers my friend 😅🍺🍺
I know this video is a several years old but once a marine, always a marine...Much respect to you and again thank you for your service and enduring commitment to the corp...Thanks for sharing...
Same to you my friend. We are all on the same team. 😎🍺🍺 Semper Fi. Cheers
I can't get over the growth of your Delonix regia's...Do you know you live Connecticut and not some tropical, humid rain forest?!? I've had the same 6" plant growing under a full spectrum grow lights for 4 months and its grown about a 1/4" a month. if that much...Your cutting are three times the size of my whole plant...Green with envy here in the Pacific Northwest...Thanks for sharing...
Really like the original Birch forest planting...Looking forward to watching its progress...Isn't amazing how time fly's by when you put your heart and soul inti something...2024 has just flown by...Thanks for sharing...
Tree is really coming along and shows such vigor...A great project...Nice view from the deck by the way...Never been to Connecticut but it looks great from your place..Thanks for sharing...Sequim, WA...
Cheers my friend. 😎🍺🍺
That top branch is gonna be pretty slick as a new leader. Good stuff, brother. The nice weather is our reward for coming back to the Light Side
Jarhead at #2...what could go wrong? 😎🍺🍺cheers brother. Semper Fi
nice tree, nice weather. t shirt and shorts in November is crazy lol
Cheers Broski 😎🍺🍺
Foistski 😊
Cheers Broski 😎🍺🍺
This is weird...So I'm a military brat...Grew up in places like Guam, Hawaii, The Philippines, all of which have Flame trees...In my candidates list of potential trees, I have a notation to try and figure out what a flame tree is and here you are growing really nice looking Delonix regia in Connecticut...Amazing coincidence...I may have about a hundred questions for concerning this tree as it looks kind of like the African Acacia tree, except it has that amazing red/orange canopy in the Spring I think...Really looking forward to finding out where you got your seeds and your technique for growing such vigorous trees in a non-tropical climate...Really cool...Thanks
I have 2 different seeds of delonix...the first is from Planters Choice Bonsai kit...the second is from a friend in Florida. Cheers for watching 😎🍺🍺
Your plants all look to have so much vigor...Well done...Really digging your channel...Thanks for sharing...
Cheers my friend
Seed room...I love it...I'm going to start so, Black Pine, Red Pine, and Madrone here in about a month...I like the idea of watching them grow even though I understand that I probably won't be around long enough to see them become actual Bonsai...That alright, watching them grow will bring me a lot of joy...Your room as well as your enthusiasm is amazing...Very inspiring...Thanks for that and for sharing...
The germination process is the best part in my opinion 😎🍺🍺cheers
File down the seed a little bit, soak the seed in warm water for 48 hours carefully remove the embryo. plant, keep moisture 👍
😎🌳🌳
Have you tried more from seed? They’re my favourite
Nope. 1 left out of 100
Lol the seeds are tricky 😅
Only been growing them for a little while but my experience you seem to be quite easy and quite durable
Yrs, wifey would agree i am easy and durable 😅🌳✂️
You should put a couple of aquariums in that room to it would be awesome. 👌🏿
Is it possible to just add dirt around a tree instead of digging a hole to plant it? I have some dawrf alberta spruces that i need to plant
You may have to continuously add to it, but i dont see why not. Maybe do some edging or rocks to hold soild from running off roots. Cheers 😎🌳🌳
@@jarheadbonsai thank you!!
Have Flame tree seeds soaking. Good to see what to expect. Thank you
Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Love the non-trad bonsai! I just harvested a couple of black locust and mimosas that grew in my yard this year so I'm looking forward to the journey and updates on yours! Cheers 😁
Hell yeh. Other than the thorns its a great fast growing species that you can work on often 😁🍺🍺cheers
video could be better quality. at least turn off the ceiling fan and get a mount for your camera
Do you have a channel so I can learn from you? 🤔🙄😘go away
One Devil Dog learning Bonsai from another Devil Dog....what could go wrong? Thank you for these videos🤣🤣

Super..!!👍 Thank You very much !! It was exactly what I was looking for my Flamboyants 😊🙋🏻♀️
Cheers for watching 😎🍺🍺
Why don't you get a chopstick-works well for the soil
Thanks!!!
cinnamon on all cut surfaces after you dab away the secretions.
I have to do that from now on
Plant one and let it ride in a large open area on your yard
Id have to do that in late Spring, and dig it up early Autumn though 😅❄️⛄️
Royal poinciana I have a few 30' by 30 ' umbrellas on my property
Where do you live? Northwest CT is way too cold for that. 😅🤔🌳
@@jarheadbonsai you are correct brother I'm in Naples Florida have 5 acres and a few full grown trees and the babies are all over the place so I thought about bonsai so I ran into your stuff 💪💪
Would love to have miniature versions of these guys in my house and in the screen porch
1st world problems.. Goats. haha
😅🐐🐐
Love the video I have 3 growing and now I can better understand and do for mine. Thank you so much. If only my others would grow.
Cheers 😎🍺🍺
The Worst!! Bells!! Those goats need BELLS. At least they have lemony fresh breath...
🤣🤣🤣"somebody put a frickin bell on him or something" ~Austin Powers....cheers Broska
@@jarheadbonsai 😂😂
Daggum it! So many green things to eat, but they just gotta hit the bonsai collection. I’d be throwing a kiddie gate between the 4x4 railing on those stairs. Or get Bruce Lee a job keeping them off the deck.
If I was only handy 😅🤔🙄cheers brother
Goats be Wildin!! Lol. Hopefully the lemon pushes new grow quickly though. It was doing strong before so I think it will be fine
Lol...fo real Broski. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Is this considered a crawling plant?
No, but it chases the sun 😎🍺🍺cheers
How rude!
It was not a fun discovery😅🐐🐐cheers broski
@@jarheadbonsai I guess I’m lucky to just be dealing with aphids 😂
Lmao
FIRE UP THE GOAT STEW!!!
Oh yes...and get the curry rockin too!!! Lmao. Cheers Broski😎🍺🍺
No new video on your tropicals 😊 can we get an update? Thanks!🙏
Will do!!!
Super easy to propagate. Cut, let it scar over for a couple days. Pot em up! I do this in the fall before i bring her back in the house for the winter. ❤ my plant is over 25 yrs old. She's huge.
Sounds great!
I would love to see your plant. I just got my plant cutting yesterday. Any tips that you can share.
@cynthiathompson8707 let the cutting scar over for a couple days. This will prevent rot or mold. Then just pot up. If possible an inch or two into the soil. I like to use a small pot with good drainage for cuttings. I find it easier to manage watering. You don't want to over water. Just keep it mildly damp. Keep your new plant near bright light by a window. Soon roots will start. Most times I set it and forget it. Giving it a shot of water oncd every 2 weeks. Have patience. Once established, there pretty hardy. Just keep it near a window in the winter. Summer time, I bring my plants outside in part sun. Only water when it hasn't rained in a while. I fertilize with Oscomote Plus for indoor/outdoor plants. I enjoy propagating. You got this! Please post a follow up! 😊 Happy gardening
@@HineyPuff thank you for the tips. I am going to use them to note. I’m kind of worried because one of the leaves is about 3 feet long. What do I do with this?
@cynthiathompson8707 you can bury that one deep. Use a stick and string to stake it in place until the roots can support it. That is a good-sized leaf from the Mother plant ! 👍
Do you make your own bonsai soil
I made a huge batch a few years ago, and have recycled for repots since then. I keep a large tub of soil and turn in some fresh perlite from time to time.
Fuck me getting motion sickness. But well done for growing your seeds
Cheers
Love the channel, brother! We have very similar tastes in trees. Keep up the great work
Thanks for watching my friend. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Looks like everybody's major mistake you're drowning him too much water
Idk man they are all healthy and happy after 6 years, so im going to stick with watering once per week. Thanks for watching. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
Jarhead Jared 👍
Lol yup...Jered
I love this plant. It is truly Queen Of The Night. They are precious in Asian culture, see Crazy Rich Asian film. I’d like to try growing them and being impatient waiting for them get old enough to bloom. Hope that mature cuttings could help speed up the process. Would you sale those long cuttings?
Sure. DM me on instagram @jarheadbonsai
I wish you have more lighting. Kinda dark.
My video skills are hit and miss 😅🌳✂️thanks for watching
Mines about a year and a half old, and it's really tall and lanky. I have not pruned it yet because the trunk is still really small for its height. Would recover if I cut it down to just a trunk? I'm scared it's gonna snap everytime I move it.
I chopped from 8ft to 1.5ft at 8 months....it always comes back. Thanks for watching 😎🌳✂️cheers
@@jarheadbonsai awesome thanks!!
@@jarheadbonsaicould you show that tree? I currently have one that is 8 feet and 3 years old that i’m not sure where to start with or even if its already too big to bother making it into a bonsai or if I do a trunk chop at this point that it would have a massive scar forever
The base of its trunk is 9 inches in circumference and I’m worried it’s too thick to do anything with without a giant ugly scar so could you show if yours has one?
@@rice1307 mine has a recent scar as I completed chopped the canopy off this Spring. It was literally a trunk in a pot...it has 4 branches wired and in training now. They bud back quickly, scars are inevitable in bonsai...go for it
I just transplanted my son's pencil plant to a bigger pot,it's doing really well now, that it has some growing room. I just took 3 clippings for myself, they r resting n water right now. I really enjoyed ur video. I love bonsai's,so I'll b watching more of it videosad my money situation gets better.
