it is good explanation, but I ftramed my figures as figurw 1.1, ... figure 5.2 and when I follow all steps and try to generate table of contents, the word gives me only select few figures, leaving out others. does it have to do anything with TOC?

Thank you. This method really works. I initially inserted my List of Tables and Figures using the document Table of Headings in conjunction with the Caption and everything worked well the first time. However, I encountered significant problems during revision of the document. The Tables would update, but the Table number and the pages were frequently off by a page or two. Attempts to update the entire table resulted in a "no Tables found" indication. I stumbled on RTRU out of frustration, and it worked the first time. You may have to update a single entry after your table populates, but doing so is fairly simple. Thanks again, RTRU.
