a radio adaption of Geothe's Faust
Simon Callow plays Faust, Ronald Pickup plays Mephistopheles and Angharad Rees plays Gretchen, in both parts of Johann Wolfgang von Geothe's Magnum Opus.
The medieval folk legend of Simon Magus, who makes a pact with the devil, forms the basis of Goethe's tragedy. Disenchanted with the limitations of his academic knowledge, Dr. Faust decides to study the arts of magic and to master the supernatural. Mephistopheles appears and offers Faust renewed youth and the power to experience the reality and the mystery of life and all the human suffering it will involve. Faust signs an agreement with the devil, but his soul will only be forfeited if ever his restless spirit is satisfied and content.

    Though I like this series, it glosses over the political landscape of post-Reformation Europe during the time of the Galileo controversy. Note that the Jesuits purpose at the time of the order's creation was a reunification of the Church, and that Reformers, like Luther and Melancthon, were biblical literalists, who vehemently opposed Copernicanism. The Jesuits played a central role in Galileo's condemnation because their interests laid elsewhere, finding common ground with Protestants to help move toward reunification, viewed as a greater purpose than supporting an unproven theory at the time. Rejecting Galileo would have been seen as a small price to pay in the interests of unifying fractured Europe.

    Though I like this series, it completely ignores the critical role that medieval Franciscans played in the development of Western science, who also would have been familiar with the Book of Nature, presented here as an invention of Galileo's, in error. Medieval Franciscans played a significant role in the development of Western science. Their contributions can be seen in several key areas: Education: The Franciscans established schools and universities across Europe, including the University of Paris, where scholars like Roger Bacon (inventor of the scientific method)studied. These institutions provided a platform for the study of natural philosophy, mathematics, and other sciences. Encouragement of Inquiry: The Franciscans encouraged inquiry and learning, even in areas that were not traditionally within the purview of theology. This openness to new ideas fostered an intellectual environment conducive to scientific discovery. Contributions to Natural Philosophy: Roger Bacon, a Franciscan friar, made significant contributions to the study of optics, mathematics, and the scientific method. His work laid the foundation for the development of experimental science. Observational Astronomy: Several Franciscan scholars made important contributions to observational astronomy. For example, William of Ockham and Jean Buridan developed theories that challenged the Aristotelian view of the universe, way before Galileo, and laid the groundwork for the Copernican revolution. Botany and Medicine: Franciscan friars were also involved in the study of botany and medicine. They established botanical gardens and wrote treatises on medicinal plants, which contributed to the development of pharmacology. Overall, the Franciscans played a crucial role in the development of Western science by fostering an environment of intellectual inquiry, supporting education, and making significant contributions to various scientific disciplines. Their legacy continues to influence scientific thought to this day.

    Though I like this series, it does need a rebuff or two. In Dame Francis Yates great work, The Art of Memory, Giordano Bruno was not executed for his belief in heliocentrism. A bit more complicated. He was in the position of a teacher and was thrown out of every Protestant country he went to spreading his own doctrines. Astrology and Magic: Bruno was also interested in astrology and magic, which were considered forbidden arts by the Church. Heretical Beliefs: Though he was a Dominican, he rejected the doctrine of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, and the authority of the Church. He also believed in an infinite universe with many worlds, which contradicted the Church's teachings on the nature of the cosmos. Pantheism: Bruno was also a pantheist, which means he believed that God is identical to the universe itself. This was considered a heretical belief by the Church, which taught that God is distinct from the created world. Rejection of Transubstantiation: Bruno rejected the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, which holds that during the Eucharist, the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ. Instead, he believed that the Eucharist was symbolic. Denial of the Virgin Birth: Bruno also denied the virgin birth of Jesus, another central tenet of Catholicism. Writings: Bruno's writings, particularly his philosophical and theological works, were considered dangerous and heretical by the Church. He was accused of promoting ideas that were contrary to Catholic doctrine and of spreading heresy. Refusal to Recant: Bruno was given several opportunities to recant his beliefs and retract his writings, but he refused to do so. This led to his eventual trial and conviction for heresy. His refusal to recant these beliefs and retract his writings ultimately led to his execution by the Roman Inquisition. Science folk still think he was a martyr to science.

    • @nigelverney9608
      @nigelverney9608 5 месяцев назад

      Yes and no and sort of. Cwm Rhondda is the tune, also sometimes known as Bread of Heaven due to the English language hymn that is often set to it. The Welsh Arglwydd arwain trwy'r anialwch is a translation of the English Bread of Heaven which is in turn a translation of the original Welsh hymn Gweddi am Nerth i fyned trwy anialwch y Byd [aka Pen Calfaria]. It's this Welsh original hymn, that was translated into English and then translated back into Welsh as Arglwydd arwain trwy'r anialwch, that we have here. Anyway that's what I took from the Cwm Rhondda wikipedia page (I just like John Ford movies and don't speak Welsh). And as I say Cwm Rhondda is the name of the tune whatever words are set to it. Does that make any sort of sense?
