Riding A Velomobile In The Rain
My velomobile is really a daily commuter machine rather than a speed machine. My original reason for getting it was because I hated getting soaking wet cycling in the rain. Seriously wet weather is a problem for most cyclists and even e-Bikes can be affected.
At the end of the Summer of 2023, we had some seriously wet weather in SW England. I took this opportunity to demonstrate how weatherproof my velomobile really is. As you will see, its not perfect as you need to maintain good ventillation to prevent misting, but it is still a good option for commuting to work.

      The plastic tubing is PVC electrical conduit as sold in many DIY stores in the UK. It is about 1m long. You heat it up with a hot air gun and carefully bend it around something suitable to get the correct curvature. I flattened one end and drilled holes to match the holes for the waterbottle holder on my seat. The tube will flap about unless the top end is reastrained. I therefore passed the tube through the head restraint bracket and used velcro ties to hold it steady. I have also used cable ties for the same job. The 15mm tube seems perfect for attaching lights and lighweight cameras such as GoPros/Clones. Hope this helps.

    I ride a recumbent trike as opposed to a velo. To solve the problem of being stuck in a high gear when I stop, put a Rohlof on the back. The trike is fast down hills but was slow uphills, so put a motor on it, now fast up and down hills. Have only rear suspension which is fine as with a light grip , front suspension not needed. If I have to go over a big pothole though, will use the rear wheel. The question is, does a velo easily fit in cycle lanes like a trike or too wide? Can it pull a trailer?

  • @KutWrite
    @KutWrite 5 месяцев назад

    For all the pluses and minuses, I'm pretty well stuck with a recumbent due to a recent surfacing of shoulder pain. Mine is a LWB (long wheelbase) Bacchetta Bella. It's more comfortable than my last two bikes, but if I had another chance, I think I'd have stuck with the most recent one, a Bacchetta Giro 20AT. Lighter and easier to fit on a rear car rack. That Giro is similar to your bike. If you still have yours, consider a rear carrying rack, as yours seems very similar to my Giro, which fit nicely.

    • @devonchris8036
      @devonchris8036 8 месяцев назад

      Legally (UK) you can ride a velomobile on cycle lanes and indeed anywhere you can legaly ride a bicycle. This includes many bus lanes, advance stop lines and shared cycle and pedestrian paths. Mostly this works but often there are inappropriate drop-kerbs, narrow anti-vehicle bollards and the staggered barrier contraptions. Most velomobiles are narrower than a standard wheelchair so in theory should fit but their length sometimes increases the challenge. And there is a related issue that often potholes and poor road surfaces mean that you have to actively choose your routes more than with say a mountain bike.

    RainX dude! So where are you riding this rig legally? All I can see are the disadvantages over riding any type of standard bicycle. I understand when people ride recumbent and trikes when it's physically required, but even those have lots of limitations. As far as riding in the rain... yes it takes much more concentration and can be straight-up miserable if you're not prepared. But it's not difficult to stay dry with the right gear even in a pounding rain. I ride an ebike in the PNW of America, we average about 39" of rain per year with long dry warm summers lately. I've never had any mechanical issues from riding in the rain, and that's over 48K miles in the last 8 years on the same ebike. I just can't imagine staying on smooth surfaces all the time, never riding single-track, and always being in traffic. Stay safe. - photos.app.goo.gl/ADgC6oyPM2gyrCq27

    I've rode Velos and trikes exclusively for over 14 years. All home built. As for signaling, I occasionally use bright green gloves and point in the direction I want to go. Bad roads are dangerous and to be avoided if possible. My present machine has 3 way independent suspension. In the "in between" seasons, when the ambient temperature and dew point are the same, fogging becomes an issue. I use a small propane catalytic radiant heater to warm the canopy. The side flaps are adjustable so fresh air isn't a problem. As for power, all my bikes are electric with non geared rear hub motors. I live in a rural area, so ive installed twin 50.4v 45ah Lithium packs each with active balancing. Range is ~260km @ 32kph

    Wax up your windows from the outside or make them otherwise hydrophobic. From the inside, the same. On the inside, you can even apply the cheapest of them all - laundry soap. And a steady air flow is solving this problem very efficiently too; you've already demonstrated it by opening the window, but I understand the issue of incoming rainwater. Maybe there is a way to cover up these window openings on the top from the rain by attaching some kind of polycarbonate cut-off. Further, there must be a bigger air outlet behind your head/back/bottom than the inlet surface area of the window openings in front of you. It has something to do with reducing airflow resistance inside the cabin. You are not located in a frosty, cold area - so the continuous flow of fresh air from the outside should not be a freezing problem - and it takes the humidity of your breath and sweat outside. And make water-draining wholes on the bottom of your automobile; those puddles are sources of evaporation and air humidity too. Anyhow, thanks for sharing. Appreciated it. Please, keep them coming.

  • @Rbboydstar
    @Rbboydstar Год назад

    From my experience a little bit of soap on the inside of the windows helps a great deal with the fogging. Got the trick from the diving community where they use baby shampoo on the inside of the mask. (Baby shampoo doesn't sting) In the velomobile there is no risk of getting it in your eyes so I'm using dishwasher soap. Just a line of soap on the window and spread it out with a piece of cloth.

      Better ventilation is far easier - a vent at the rear will pull air through the velo once you get up to speed. A fan blowing up over the windows from the bottom might lap be rather useful in this style.

    • @chrisleaver2257
      @chrisleaver2257 Год назад

      Actually it isn't as bad as you may think. You do get a little spray but the internal wheel arches prevent most of the water from entering the cabin. Larger puddles are worse as is deep standing water. So far I have never been splashed by water entering from the footwell. You do get a few drips from the windows but it isn't a problem. However in comparison with how wet you get from a bicycle when it rains, there is no contest. I do put a rain cover over the velomobile when parked to limit drips inside. You don't need insulation as you are so protected from the wind that even moderate efort keeps you very warm. I normally just wear a sweatshirt over a T-shirt in winter. Fortunately my commute is only a couple of miles or so. I have ridden in 0 degrees C and admit I took a thin coat but it was only really needed for the walk from the velomobile to my office. If you really wanted to add insulation you could easily stick some on the internal surfaces of the shell. It might also make the machine a little quieter inside. But my feeling is that if you travel more than a mile or so you will probably stay sufficiently warm with normal clothing unless you are in a location with really cold weather. I am currently producing a video on riding in the rain which should be available in a few weeks time.

But for used machines you really need to hunt about a bit. There is a facebook group and you also sometimes see velomobiles for sale on various auction sites (but haven't seen one for 12 months) Try the Velomobile Club Of Great Britain I'm saving up for a new Quattrevelo or Bulk, but cannot justify the price yet. Chris, thank you for your reply and honesty. I have placed an order for the Goal 26x, and I can’t wait to get it in about 3-4 weeks! One piece of advice I can give you is “Wear a helmet.” What led me to recumbents in the first place was a bad wreck on my upright bike, that cracked my helmet all the way through in two places. I was fine, other than a mild concussion, and road rashes. If I wasn’t wearing my helmet, that would have been my skull! I found out later, that in recumbent riding, there are far fewer and less severe injuries to the head, neck, and shoulders in the event of an accident. Joe

    • @KutWrite
      @KutWrite 5 месяцев назад

      A helmet is less important on a recumbent. If you fall, it'll be about a 1' travel to the ground. Your hand will likely receive the most damage, or your shoulder (as in my case - still hurts to this day). If you hit something head-on, it's more like "feet-on" as feet and legs take the brunt of a forward crash.

    Chris, thanks for the informative video. I am considering a Goal 26x to purchase. I have a Baccehetta Giro A20 currently. I was interested in the Goal because of the rear suspension. Does it pogo much when you are pedaling? Also, how is the bottom of the seat, do you have a tendency to slide off, or is it reasonably comfortable? Lastly, do you have to use a headrest, or is it okay to go without it?

    • @chrisleaver2257
      @chrisleaver2257 Год назад

      I have never ridden a Baccehetta so I cannot make a comparison. However the rear suspension on the Performer does work reasonably well. Yes, it does pogo a bit but mostly when climbing hills in a low gear when you need to work quite hard. I have a velomobile which also pogos a bit under heavy cycling. Thus I guess they all probably do it slightly. On the flat once moving, the pogo effect is far less. As regards the seat, I do slide forward a bit. Seems more comfortable if the seat is fully reclined but this makes it harder to ride in town or at slower speeds. The worst bit about the seat is that it scratches into the sides of your legs if you have to put your feet down very quickly for example if you make a clumsy move and lose your balance. The Performer Goal needs a bit of practice to ride well, but is great fun on nice cycle routes and very comfortable if you don't have to keep stopping or go up very steep hills. Personally, I find I really like using the headrest. I think I would get a sore neck without it. But you don't have to fit it. You may find some helmets might touch the headrest. Having now had it for quite some time, I think the rack could be a bit sturdier. Brakes still squeak but work fine (haven't tried resin ones yet). Hope this helps.

    Hi Chris, very informative videos about the Challenger velomobile ! How fast can you approximately go for 15 or 20 minutes constantly ? I am discussing this with some folks at the German velomobile forum, while I am waiting for my used Challenger to be delivered. It's clear that this type of vehicle is a bit slower top speed wise than the "pavement-torpedoes" (Milan, Quest, DF, etc,), but I hope it's not that bad.

    • @devonchris8036
      @devonchris8036 Год назад

      To be honest I think my challenger is not a fast velomobile. It seems best for commuting. Mine has uk-legal electric assist but only rear suspension. Relatively easy to maintain 17mph on smooth level surface. Could probably go slightly faster if i put in more effort. But my local roads are very uneven, lots of potholes, and hills. I use it primarily as weather protection. It is probably quicker than a mountain bike but other factors such as road infrastructure and other traffic mean there is little advantage in speed. Good for carrying stuff though.

      Not absolutely true but I understand your concern. Yes the ticket price for a new velomobile is a bit steep for casual buyers but remember they can be much cheaper to run and have less depreciation unless you crash it. Legally you can ride it without a licence etc. If you have very poor vision it may be best not to do so for your own safety. You also need to take into account exactly how much it will be used and on what kinds of roads as for many short journeys it is hard to beat a standard bicycle. And for many an e-bike (even diy kit versions) may be a better option although I'm not really a fan of them. Most people may need to do some calculatons to see how much they can justify spending.

      Yes, I have tried it at night. But pretty much all the cameras are a bit poor in the dark or in bad weather. You do tend to get some flaring of headlights which makes it much more difficlt to read number plates. Similarly light rain and mist can cause the images to be less clear. Unfortunately this happens to almost all safety cameras. Under normal street lighting it works well enough. In unlit streets, not so good. However it is really only intended to provide supplementary evidence in case of a road traffic incident. You can see a short clip from this camera as used at night on my velomobile close to the end of this video : ruclips.net/video/1BMnvQkvty8/видео.html And some more clips are in this viddeo: ruclips.net/video/QOO6eR4p85o/видео.html
