      Hi Ray, they are Cymatic uTrack 24. They’re great but they’ve stopped making them. They’re quite difficult to get hold of and alternatives are more expensive. David

    I know it's completely unrealistic to be touring with old analogue kit given it's unreliablity and inflexiblity but I'm just super chuffed that I managed to see Gary live right in the beginning when he was using this wonderful equipment.

    wow what a fascinating video, just out of interest how come you sample the old keyboard sounds and not use VSTs and save the settings and presets on the Mac. Isn't it too restrictive live these days just to have the a single sample to play with? But I suppose on the otherside as you said you are there to play rather than go off and creating something sounding difference. :)

      @swayallstars 11 месяцев назад

      Hi Rich, Glad you enjoyed the video. I really must do another one. We sampled the old sounds when Gary was selling all his old gear when he moved to America. It seemed like the right thing to do (to have those actual authentic sounds from Numan's personal keyboards). With a bit of tinkering I got them sounding and reacting great. Then a very talented programmer called Matt Jessup gave us a library of Pleasure Principle patches that he'd made for the Access Virus. With those and a few other VSTs I tend to mix them all together to create sounds big enough to work with the current arrangements of the songs. It will interesting to see how we end up doing the upcoming PP tour - wish me luck!

    My favorite thank you SO much. Two of my favorite things in life are pleasure principals and midi programming. I tried to geek out on the set up at the last portland show, but ya never really can get a good view. This is amazing.

    Hi David, has the setup evolved much since you originally posted this? Been a fan of Numan since the Tubeway Army Days. I always dreamed of being one of the "men in boxes" since the Telekon tour.

      Hi David, nothing's really changed since this video. I have a brand new more powerful MacBook Pro and a couple of new VST synths but essentially the set-up is the same. It's still the best option for me!

      Things have crashed on stage. When we were using a laptop with Logic or Live we had a couple of really bad crashes mid gig. Luckily we had a back-up laptop but the show was halted for a while which was awful. We switched to Cymatics a couple of years ago and we've only ever had one problem and that was probably piloy error rather thank technology. They're great!

    The genteelness of wistful Dreaming through Dancing is so well presented in this very lovely and melancholy power ballad. The subtle use of a Vocoder at the start of the song is like the transition between two spheres - from reality to imagination. The hopes and joys were reflected on the dancer's expression very well as the video progressed. An elegant and powerful song!

      Hi Jon, I was using a 2016 2.9GHz Quad Core i7 with 16GB of RAM but it was starting to misbehave on stage (lagging and glitching - there was a lot of 3rd-party pug-ins on there) so I've just upgraded to an M1 Max with 64gb of RAM

    Another David here! Thank you so much for this, as a huge Gary Numan fan and keyboardist this was very insightful and helpful. Now that Cymatic Audio has gone out of business, have you transferred to another player? I'm looking at Behringer X32 myself, but would love to hear your thoughts. Is that the Radial KL-8 mixer you are using? I love that it has dual USB inputs for switching between Macs if necessary. Have you come across any alternate mixer systems that compare (with 4 or more stereo inputs)? Thanks for any/all advice. Greatly appreciated in advance.

    • @swayallstars
      @swayallstars 2 года назад

      Hi, Thanks for getting in touch. It is a worry that Cymatics have gone out of production (and a shock) but for the time being, because they're so good, we're sticking with them. I guess I'm hoping that somebody starts making them again or we will be looking for a replacement at some point. I use a Radial DI that switches between the two Cymatics if the first one stops. This has never happened though!

      Hi David, We're still using the Cymatic at the moment and I think quite a few other acts are as well. It is a worry though now that they no longer exist. I haven't looked at any alternatives yet - I'm hoping somebody will start making them again!

      @@littlefinger3019 Hi David, that’s great news, and fingers crossed production will get rolling again. In fact I’m waiting for a cymatics power conditioner to arrive here myself. Chose it over a Furman unit. Thanks again for getting back in touch!

    Not a musician at all myself but I do love seeing what goes into making all this work. Thanks for this. I am curious though, you have 3 synths set up, do they contribute sounds or capabilities of their own or are they just there are midi controllers? Edit: Nevermind, you got around to answer that one in the video after I typed this. Really wish I could play ... no ambition to perform, would just like to be able to play a bit.

    Loved your interview with Vaughan George. I play in a band in Sydney that does 80s synth covers and use a very similar approach so it was fascinating getting your insight. I produce backing tracks at home using Cakewalk and also use Cakewalk live for playback. In addition it sends MIDI triggers to our lighting rig via ShowXpress. I look after this on stage along with synths an some bass so totally get where you are coming from. Would love to hear more about how you work with your equipment on stage. Very tempted by the Cymatic UTrack or L16 but also keeping my eye on the new Idoru unit which is in development. @Voxneon
